PESHAWBESTOWN — Rachel Catherine (Antoine) Pamame, 91, went to her heavenly home on Feb. 9, 2008, at Munson Medical Center.
Rachel was born on Sept. 3, 1916, to the late George Antoine and Elsie Fisher in Northport. Growing up, she was fluent in her native language. She and her siblings attended Mt. Pleasant Indian School. Soon after, she met and married Henry Wabindato and began her family in Custer, where they worked in the fields picking fruits and vegetables.
During the war, Rachel helped collect materials for the war effort. She then met her second husband, Jonas Pamame, and started her second family. She and her family moved to Manistee, where they worked in the apple orchards. From there, they moved to Holland and, after her husband's death, she moved to Peshawbestown.
Rachel was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. She enjoyed camp meetings, going to church, reading her bible, singing gospel songs, sewing, meeting with friends and family, going to pow-wows and shopping at thrift stores.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Leonard, Luscious, Irving and Cletus; sister, Violet; and daughter, Betty Mae Pamame.
Surviving Rachel are two sons, Eugene Wabindato of Branch, Chester Pamame of Peshawbestown; one daughter, Janice (Pamame) Case of Traverse City; one sister, Lorraine Antoine of Canada; 17 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place today, Feb. 12, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the funeral home.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
