When were your John and Fannie born? My husband's grandparents were John P Sunich and Fannie Gralick. He was born 1882, she was born in 1889. They had the 11 children but they are totally different than the names you have. They had a daughter Francis but she married Harry Shunn and moved to Washington. They had one son. The family moved from Michigan to Peonia, Colorado and then Francis and my mother-in law, Mary Mamie moved to Washington. Fannie died in Colorado in 1883. I have the names of John's parents as Peter and Kate Ploutz----?. No further information. Some of John ad Fannie's children were Albert, Joseph, Clara, John. The rest I don't have close by.

Hello,

I am descended from John and Fannie (Frances/Francesca) Sunich. Their daughter Frances had a daughter Oresa who had a son Clayton who is my father. This is what I know of their heritage:

John Sunich (Zunich) was an Austrian Catholic who married Fannie Graylick/Graylich who was a Jewish girl from a small village in the area near Austria now known as Slovenia. Fannie converted to Catholicism and completely abandoned the practice of Judaism. As far as I know, the only daughter who knew of this was Frances, who told my grandmother. Most of the children were devout Catholics and the girls remained active in the Slovenian Society (I don't know if that is exactly what it is called). My grandmother married a Jewish man although they were never particularly active in any faith. As far as I know, I am the only actively (religiously) Jewish descendant of theirs, as my father married a Jewish woman.

I never knew they had 11 children ... I know of 8 -- Ann (whose name was actually Clarice Anna), Sophie (Sophia), Gayla (atually Angelica), Pauline, Frances (Francesca Johanna)- who was my great-grandmother, Mary (who had MS and died possibly of Scarlet Fever), another deceased boy whose name I don't know, and John Jr. I know a few of their childrens' names ... Oresa, Richard, and Ed.

I can't imagine there being another John and Fannie Sunich in Calumet, so this must be them. I would love to hear what you know. If possible, could you let me know? You're welcome to post it here or email me directly.

Shalom,
Shloma Rosenberg

PS You may be interested to know that Frances Jr.'s daughter married the 1st cousin of Julius Rosenberg, who, together with his wife Ethel Rosenberg, was executed as an "atomic spy" by the US Gov't in 1953, although Ethel's brother admitted he was actually the guilty party on "60 Minutes" a few years ago.

He had a wife named Mary and a niece named Hilda Nikkla (?) living with him and a couple of lodgers, a Matti (Matts?) and William (Wilhelm?) Fogde, probably my great grandfather and his younger brother.

The child of Dominick Bassolo was named Dominick Nello Basolo. Does the name Nello mean anything to anyone? I do not know if this is after his father Dominick or if the mother named the child on her own after the husband died, since the father died abt 4 months before the child was born. I think there is a good possibility that Alexandrina named her first child after her husband.

I have a Dominick Bassolo born abt 1880 marrying Alexandrina Cheraz 1903 at Fort Smith,Sebastian Co., Arkansas. They say they are from Gwynn, at that time.
He died and is buried in Sebastian Co., Ark 28 Dec 1907. His only child was born after he died, Apr 1908 and was named Dominick Basolo. There are many mis-spellings for this name. I know he was from Italy and family says Northern Italy. He was a miner. There are many other Italian families of coal miners related but I can not find the connected Basolo line. Can anyone help?

Alicia,Thank you for all the great information on my Kaikkonen family. You have been very helpful. Because of this information I was able to connect to the Halonen family! Thanks

I am also researching Karl (Charles) August Palmroos (Palmrose in USA)born 1860, or 1861 near Salo, or Pernio,Finland. I found his passenger record, 1901, but unable to find birth record on the Hiski BDM site. He married Mathilda Johnson in Finland abt. 1887. Don't know his parents names so I am stymied. Any help would be appreciated greatly.

Most are from the Ishpeming and Negaunee Michigan Bessolos some from Detroit and some from Ivrea Italy one is of a man in Calumet, MI.
We do not know who most of the pictures are of because very few have any thing written on them and the person who had them has passed away. If you would like me to email some to you contact me at i2mtraveling@hotmail.com. Please put family tree in subject box so I don't disreguard your message. maybe you can identify some of them.
Donna

Norwegian, Fin, and Sami ancestors can found online, in English, & searchable, in 1865, 1875, & 1900 Norwegian census records...

Many of Michigan's ancestors came from Norway, whether they were of Norwegian, Fin, or Sami ethnicity. Especially those that settled in the UP and other northern states, in the US. Listed in US census records as born in Norway, their ethnicity was of Finnish, Sami, Norwegian, or often a mix of two or more. They came to Michigan from the area of Finnmark, Norway, in the Arctic Circle.

There are a number of Norwegian census and parish records available, some in English, that are searchable, online. The 1865 Norwegian census lists ethnicity, but the 1875 does a more detailed job. It lists the ethnicity of the person's father and mother. One very good site for this is from the Norwegian Historical Center:

http://www.rhd.uit.no/indexeng.html

For those who don't like to read the instructions, it is easier to start searching the census section. Just remember to put in only the first few letters of the first and last name or farm/domicile name. That way you will see a greater selection, which will be spelled in a more traditional Norwegian way, instead of the Americanized version.

Take the time to educate yourself on how this site is organized for maximum benefit. Read the instructions, at some point. You'll be glad you did!

It really helps to have a translator program handy, though not required. There are many, online and free. I like this one for my own personal use, though it requires registering to get the Norwegian, Finnish, and some other languages. Not only does it translate, but you can hear the words, in the language of choice, as well as see it. When using this for translating the census, use Danish to English, for best results, or when Norwegian doesn't have a tranlation for the words listed.

http://www.translation2.paralink.com/

Another Nowegian site has digitised parish registers, where you can see a photocopy of the pages of the actual book (of vital records), from the parish, online:

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read

If you know the farm name of your ancestor, but don't know where to look for it, in Norway, check out this site. Oluf Rygh: Norwegian Farm Names:

http://www.dokpro.uio.no/rygh_ng/rygh_form.html

Those with ancestors from Finnmark often have Sami roots. The Sami people are also referred to as Lapplanders. Information on them can be found in many places, but one is found here:

http://encyclopedia.jrank.org/KRO_LAP/LAPLAND_or_LAPPLAND.ht...

Feel free to share your favorite sites on Norway, Finnmark, and the people of the region, that were made up of ethnic Norwegians, Fins, and Sami.

One more thing, you might try searching for Michigan Tech's website. There may be someone there you can contact to find more information about your ancestor. They have a LOT of information about the mines of the UP.
I know they have an archivist (sp?)but his name evades me at the moment. He helped me a great deal when I was looking for information a good number of years ago.

On my grandmothers marriage cert Carlo,s father was also called Carlo so perhaps its him as the date if its a death date would tie in with him?

My grandfather was Peter Klobucher, his Father, John Klobucher (wife Margeret Zager) immigrated to the US from Yugoslavia with some of his brothers. They moved to the Keweenaw and he worked the mines at Phoenix. Later the Klobucher family moved to Greenly, Minnesota and homesteaded. Eventually they moved to the Kalamazoo/Mattawan area of southwest Michigan with a large contigent of other Croatian families. My Grandfather mentioned an Uncle Michael (I always assumed it was a Klobucher) who lived in the Calumet area and had an old Terraplane automobile.

Are there any pictures that exist of when Copper Falls actually had residents? For example: overview of town, some houses, people, etc. Also asking the same regarding Petherick. I am -guessing- that the two places were relatively close together. Also: German/Catholics from this area would have been buried where? I know some are in Pine Grove in Eagle Harbor, but anywhere else to look? My gr-gr-grandparents (Gottlieb Wappler & Mary Wills Wappler)were married there 09/01/1852 and all their children were born there from 1853-1864, and my gr-gr-grandparents would have died in 1867 (Gottlieb) & 1874 (Mary). One more question: where would the "half-way house" be in relation to Copper Falls/Central Mine (which I know were close together)? My gr-grandfather, Henry Warbler drove the stage coach there for a while - 1870s. Much has been uncovered regarding Central but I am having a real hard time finding information about Copper Falls.

Our family has a Charlie Besselo from Houghton. He married Myrtle
Engel/Engle in 1932. Your Charlie is about the same age and I am wondering
if they are the same.
We know very little about him as he would have been an uncle by marriage and
died before we were old enough to know him.
Thank you
Frances Callaghan

"Big Annie" Clemenc (Mrs. Joseph Klemenc) of 1913 Strike fame was a Klobuchar. Her parents were George and Mary Klobuchar and came from Slovenia in the Austrian Empire in the 1880's. They can be found in Calumet on 6th St. in the 1910 U.S. Census. I'm sure Klobucher/Klobuchar are the same name. My mother went to school at Sacred Heart (Calumet, Mich,) with a George Klobuchar in the 1920's & 30's. I would look for spelling variations in locating this family.

Lynne

While searching the Hecla Cemetery in Laurium, which is essenitialy in Calumet I found a headstone for a Carlo Bessolo. There is a date of 1885 which I can't determine for sure of it is death date or birth, but I haven't studied it. (Also, the stone is cracked in half and the lower portion is missing. The language appears to be Italian. I will be sending the photo's to the Houghton county Website and Historical Society soon, but if you think this might be your person of interest let me know and I will email you the photo.

Greg

I googled "amygdaloid mine" +michigan and found this site: http://www.hal.state.mi.us/1870census/Search.aspx?County=Kew..., which lists your Joseph Stone and has a link to the 1870 census image that shows his wife Mary. I agree with the other respondant that the Post Office appears to be for Penn Mine, but I believe that Amygdaloid Mine is the location that you are looking for. The Copper Handbook, Vol. X by H.J.Stevens (1911) for the years 1910-1911 says this about the Amydgadoid Mining Company: "Dead. Lands were sold, 1905, to Calumet & Hecla Mining Co. Formerly at Central Mine, Keweenaw Co., Mich. Described Vol. II." I don't have Volume II, but you might be able to get it through interlibrary loan. The Central Mine location can be located on a Michigan State highway map as the town of Central along U.S. 41 between Phoenix and Delaware. Jim DeGraff
Hi
You can check at the Tech archives , I had posted an old photo of the Lind family from Copper Falls . I have seen very little photos from Copper Falls unless the families
have kept them in their possession. I think that I may have a photo of the old school and a boarding house that was run by the Nils and Martine Lind family, that is about it.
Alicia
