I am looking for relatives of Michael Sunich who resided in Keweenaw County. He was born in Jugoslavia 6 JAN 1866, died 9 NOV 9145 in Calumet. He was married to Catherine Klobucher. Any information on either families would be appreciated.

My husband's grandparents were John Sunich and Fannie Gralick, and am trying to find their heritage. He lived in Cathlumet, Michigan and they had 11 children, one of whom was my mother-in-law. She was born in 1906 and was the oldest. Is it possible Michael is John's father? If so, I have alot of information on his descendants.

I have a Catherine that married a Sunich and lived in Milwaukee. Catherines sister Mary married a Joseph Stukel. They were native to Yugoslavia. Is this the same Catherine?? I believe her name was Klobucher......

My grandfather was Peter Klobucher, his Father, John Klobucher (wife Margeret Zager) immigrated to the US from Yugoslavia with some of his brothers. They moved to the Keweenaw and he worked the mines at Phoenix. Later the Klobucher family moved to Greenly, Minnesota and homesteaded. Eventually they moved to the Kalamazoo/Mattawan area of southwest Michigan with a large contigent of other Croatian families. My Grandfather mentioned an Uncle Michael (I always assumed it was a Klobucher) who lived in the Calumet area and had an old Terraplane automobile.

My Catherine Klobucher was born 5 Oct 1863 in Cernomelj Jugoslavia. I think her father was George and mother Ann Adam. Catherine is as far back as I have been able to go. There were also Klobuchars in the Keweenaw. I don't know if this helps. Jackie Snavely

"Big Annie" Clemenc (Mrs. Joseph Klemenc) of 1913 Strike fame was a Klobuchar. Her parents were George and Mary Klobuchar and came from Slovenia in the Austrian Empire in the 1880's. They can be found in Calumet on 6th St. in the 1910 U.S. Census. I'm sure Klobucher/Klobuchar are the same name. My mother went to school at Sacred Heart (Calumet, Mich,) with a George Klobuchar in the 1920's & 30's. I would look for spelling variations in locating this family.

Hello,

I am descended from John and Fannie (Frances/Francesca) Sunich. Their daughter Frances had a daughter Oresa who had a son Clayton who is my father. This is what I know of their heritage:

John Sunich (Zunich) was an Austrian Catholic who married Fannie Graylick/Graylich who was a Jewish girl from a small village in the area near Austria now known as Slovenia. Fannie converted to Catholicism and completely abandoned the practice of Judaism. As far as I know, the only daughter who knew of this was Frances, who told my grandmother. Most of the children were devout Catholics and the girls remained active in the Slovenian Society (I don't know if that is exactly what it is called). My grandmother married a Jewish man although they were never particularly active in any faith. As far as I know, I am the only actively (religiously) Jewish descendant of theirs, as my father married a Jewish woman.

I never knew they had 11 children ... I know of 8 -- Ann (whose name was actually Clarice Anna), Sophie (Sophia), Gayla (atually Angelica), Pauline, Frances (Francesca Johanna)- who was my great-grandmother, Mary (who had MS and died possibly of Scarlet Fever), another deceased boy whose name I don't know, and John Jr. I know a few of their childrens' names ... Oresa, Richard, and Ed.

I can't imagine there being another John and Fannie Sunich in Calumet, so this must be them. I would love to hear what you know. If possible, could you let me know? You're welcome to post it here or email me directly.

Shalom,
Shloma Rosenberg

PS You may be interested to know that Frances Jr.'s daughter married the 1st cousin of Julius Rosenberg, who, together with his wife Ethel Rosenberg, was executed as an "atomic spy" by the US Gov't in 1953, although Ethel's brother admitted he was actually the guilty party on "60 Minutes" a few years ago.
