I'm looking for my gg grandfather, John Webb b 1797 in Lincoln, later Catauba Co,North Carolina. Thefamily ,except for one son left and went to Florida, around 1860, the last time I found them in NC was on the 1860 census. John was born in Ireland, I do not know exactly when he came to America, but suppect he was in his late teens. I have been able to follow Noah, the son who remained in NC ,but John was never in their home. I wonder if he might have been in the Home Guard during the Civil War and was killed. Three of his sons served. Thanks

Hi, Tim. Your Potes linr ties in with mine. James Potes was the brother of both Maggie and Sarah Potes/Poates. Both sisters were married to Thomas Riley Payne before he, as a widower, married their brother's widow, Helen Carpenter Potes.

I am very interested in the Potes line, specifically their Native American heritage. I have a picture of Sarah Potes when she was married to Thomas Riley Payne and if it weren't for the Anglo clothing and hair style you might imagine her as an Indian princess. Her black, snapping eyes bore a strong genetic influence on the Payne line my birth considering I'm the first descendent in this line to have blue eyes.

Anyhow, if you have any info on the Potes/Poates line I'd be very interested in sharing.

Thanks,

Michelle

1907 Burial location for Susan A. NELSON

I am specifically looking for burial info for Susan Adeline KENT CHRISTY NELSON.

The Death certificate states her name as Susan A. NELSON. Born 24 Nov 1823 in Hubbardton, Rutland Co, VT to Theodore and Lucy (ARNOLD) KENT.

Susan died 22 June 1907 in LEETSVILLE, Kalkaska Co, MI, of Rheumatism of the Heart. The death certificate indicates she was buried in Leetsville on June 24, 1907. Undertaker was Clark Bros (can't read the second word well) of Kalkaska, MI.

The DC was filed June 27, 1907, so the info has got to be correct, right?

She is NOT in the Maple Grove Cemetery (Leetsville) index online, nor is her stone visible. A wonderful volunteer walked the grounds of the Maple Grove Cem to look for her stone and didn't find it. Perhaps it's fallen or under grass? Or perhaps she is buried somewhere else in Leetsville?

ANY help would be appreciated? Or suggestions for other resources to contact for help in locating her burial location!

Thanks,

Rob

rthomasma (at) yahoo

Thanks Mae - didn't mean for you to work so hard. Just wondering if any people up there in Kalkaska have run across this bunch buried in a cemetary up there, or can locate an obit, can tell me if the kids buried with the parents or if the parents are buried together. Right before Chauncy died they also had a daughter Florence M. b: 24 May 1884. I know also that out of all these children William was the only one who survived into adulthood. Thanks again, Becky

I know this message is almost 10 years in reply. Ralph David Fargo was the son of Nelson E Fargo and Eva B Fargo who were married on July 4, 1883 in Fife Lake, Michigan. Ralph D Fargo was born July 4,1884 and married Kate M. Townley on Aug 6, 1906.

He had one brother Myron James Fargo, my grandfather, and two sisters Ruth Olive Fargo and Jane Irene Fargo.

My father James J. Fargo talked about a cousin with the last name of Phillips who lives or lived in Toronto, Canada. Are you related to them.

James K Fargo
james_k_fargo@msn.com

Family of George W. and Hannah Lovina (CURTIS) Frey/Fry

I am looking for information on the family of George W. and Hannah (CURTIS) Frey or Fry. George was born June, 1850 in PA. Hannah was born March, 1856 at Newberg Twp., Cass Co., MI, the eldest child of Martin S. and Sally Ann (WEATHERWAX) Curtis. George and Hannah were married 4 March, 1876 at Constantine. St. Joseph Co., MI. They appear in the 1880 US Census for Three Rivers, St. Joseph Co., MI. A daughter, Pearl May Frey, was born in Three Rivers on 12 December, 1878 but for some reason was not enumerated with her parents in the 1880 Census. At some point between then and July, 1885, George, Hannah and Pearl removed to Orange Twp., Kalkaska Co., MI. A son, Claud A. Frey, was born there on 7 July, 1895. Another son, Clyde Frey, was born at Orange Twp. on 7 August, 1888 but, according to census information, he apparently died young. Another daughter, Lena Bell Frey, was born at Kalkaska on 10 June, 1891. This family is enumerated in the 1900 US Census under the FRY spelling being resident in Orange Twp.

I do know that Pearl May Frey married George GRAGG on 18 June, 1902 in Kalkaska but pretty much everything else is a blank. I would be grateful for whatever help I can get to fill those in! Hanna Curtis Frey's maternal grandfather was my maternal great great grandfather. If anyone else out there is interested in this family, I have an incredible amount of data on the WEATHERWAX family connection to share.

Thanks a bunch for your help! Since posting this query, I have discovered some research that says Hannah Lovina Curtis was a daughter of Martin Curtis's brother, David Curtis and his wife, Abigail EASTERN. Since they do not show up for any census after 1850, my suspicions are that Hannah lost her parents when she was very young. It appears that she was probably raised by her Uncle Marty and Aunt Sally. This has been difficult to sort out because Hannah is included in several Martin Curtis family photos as well as one I have of a Curtis family reunion. She's not a blood relative but at least I know that now. Mystery solved!

Hi! I am looking for information re: Isaac Rosenburg born March 1855 married to Amanda Wilbur. Sons Jesse, Thurman. He's my great great grandfather. I know he lived in Kalkaska at least from 1880-1910 according to census records. I would love information re: where he lived before 1880 (he was born in New York) and after 1910 - especially death records....and any stories people might have. I think he had a farm in Kalkaska. He's elusive! I've been looking for months...in all the wrong places! Note: there were TWO Isaac Rosenburgs in Kalkaska born in 1855. My Isaac was NOT the son of Peter Rosenburg & Sara Race.

Thank you so much!

Susan

Hello. I found your post about Donald Barton. There are two obituaries posted on the Kalkaska Roots Web message board, one for Pfc. Donald Barton and one for his grandmother, Mrs. Orpha Sanderson Barton. It looks like Donald Barton was an only son, even an only child, as was his father Harwood Barton. According to the obituary for Mrs. Barton, Harwood lived in Manistique, Michigan in 1954. I see that Harwood Barton worked at the I.J. Mosher Service Station and that Harwood and his mother are buried on the same lot as I.J. Mosher and his wife. Email me and I will give you the mailing address of I.J. Mosher's granddaughter. She does genealogy and will know if Bartons and Moshers were related. Hope all this helps!
I will type the obituaries below.
Dawn Triplett, President, Kalkaska Genealogical Society

Kalkaska Leader and Kalkaskian, January 18, 1951
Pfc. Donald Barton Killed In Korea
Another local boy has made the supreme sacrifice for his country and as we look down the long roster of those who have given their lives for the principle of America, the price seems almost too heavy.
Mr. and Mrs. Harwood Barton who operate the I.J. Mosher Service Station in Kalkaska, received word Sunday night from the War Dept. in Washington, D.C., informing them that their only son Pfc. Donald James Barton, 19, had been killed in action in Korea on December 4, 1950. Young Barton was a member of the 31st Regiment of the 7th Division, and had been in service better than two years. He was sent overseas in March 1949, and stationed at Camp Crawford, Hokkaido, Japan until the Inchon invasion.
Besides the parents he is survived by his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Orpha Barton of Kalkaska.

Kalkaska Leader and the Kalkaskian, February 4, 1954
Rites Friday for Mrs. Barton
Death came Sunday evening, January 31, 1954, to Mrs. Orpha Sanderson Barton, 85, at the Mooney Convalescent Home in Cadillac, where she had been a patient since January 26.
Deceased was born September 10, 1868, at Romeo, Mich. She came to Garfield Township, Kalkaska County, in 1939, and moved into the village of Kalkaska in 1941. She was a life member of the Star of Zion Chapter of the O.E.S. in Detroit, and a member of the Golden Age Club of Kalkaska.
Surviving is one son, Harwood Barton, of Manistique.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:30 from the Berg Funeral Home, with Rev. James Mathews officiating. Burial will be made in Evergreen cemetery.

EVERGREEN CEMETERY, Village of Kalkaska, Kalkaska, Michigan:
Lot 619	5 BARTON, ORPHA: d. 31 Jan 1954, age 85, res – Kalkaska, p of d – Wexford Co., Acute Pulmonary Edema, Congestive Heart Failure, mother of Buz BARTON, widow

6 BARTON, HARWOOD S.: d. 27 Oct 1973, age 65, p of d – Butte Co.

Hi, I did some more checking. Charley and Blanch had four children. They had a son Harry E. Richardson, who was born in about 1902, daughter Florence M. Richardson, who was born in about 1905, daughter Buelah Richardson who was born in about 1907 and daughter Ellen Richardson who was born in October of 1917. However, by the time of the 1930 census, they are shown living with no children, which indicates that Ellen may have died young. In the 1930 census there is a Harry E. Richardson AND a Buelah Richardson both living in Traverse City. They might be the right ones to be the children of Charley and Blanch. I think there is a grave for a Florence M. Richardson in Evergreen Cemetery in Kalkaska, so she may have never married. In the 1930 census, the Harry Richarson in Traverse City was married with a daughter, but the Buelah Richardson living there was not married yet. I don't know after that.

Natalie
