Solomon Jay Riley, 78, lifelong resident of the Kalkaska area, died Sunday, Nov. 25, at his residence.
Mr. Riley was born in Kalkaska County on September 22, 1901, the son of Solomon and Ida Ayres Riley. He married Ella Nelson in Fife Lake on October 28, 1922, who survives.
He worked as a lumberjack, farmer, and brakeman for the Grand Trunk Railroad prior to his retirement. He was affiliated with the Evergreen Bible Baptist Church.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jay of Arkansas, and Dan of Sherwood; six daughters, Mrs. Carl (Adeline) Yandes of Nebraska, Mrs. Orville (Veretta) Hollister of Bellevue, Mrs. Lyle (Elma) Walbey of East LeRoy, Mrs. Charles (Georgia) Thornburg of Lakeview, Mrs. James (Glenna) Thornburg of Athens, and Mrs. John (Mary) Tenney of Battle Creek; one brother, James of Florida; 35 grandchildren; and 27 great grandchildren.
Four brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 29, at the Schwartz-Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska. Rev. Ronald Jackson pastor of the Evergreen Bible Baptist Church, officiated. Burial was in the Lodi Cemetery, Kalkaska County.
