Classification: Obituary
Surnames: Carpenter Potes Payne
Helen Carpenter was born in Fulton County, Ohio, July 19, 1849 and departed this life May 14, 1926, age 76 years, 9 months and 25 days. November 7, 1876 (s/be 1867), she was married to James M. Potes of Fulton County, Ohio. To this union 3 children were born Della E. Potes, Herbert H. Potes and Loral Potes, two of whom preceded their mother.

James M. Potes passed away May 10, 1900. Mrs. Potes was married again to Thomas R. Payne in December 1906, who departed this life November 25, 1913. Mrs. Payne had been a widow since that time and has lived in Kalkaska. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Excelsior. She was a faithful and devoted Christian; hence she was able to say though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.

She leaves to mourn one son, Herbert H. Potes, fourteen grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church, Monday May 17, 1926 at 10:30am. Reverend J. B. McGinness officiating. The body was taken to Excelsior and laid there to rest. L. M. Clapp was the funeral director.

Leader and Kalkaskian, Thursday, May 20, 1926

Hi, Tim. Your Potes linr ties in with mine. James Potes was the brother of both Maggie and Sarah Potes/Poates. Both sisters were married to Thomas Riley Payne before he, as a widower, married their brother's widow, Helen Carpenter Potes.

I am very interested in the Potes line, specifically their Native American heritage. I have a picture of Sarah Potes when she was married to Thomas Riley Payne and if it weren't for the Anglo clothing and hair style you might imagine her as an Indian princess. Her black, snapping eyes bore a strong genetic influence on the Payne line my birth considering I'm the first descendent in this line to have blue eyes.

Anyhow, if you have any info on the Potes/Poates line I'd be very interested in sharing.

Thanks,

Michelle
