He loved his Harley and loved to ride. But, there was nothing that compared to his dedication to his son, daughter, and service to the Lord. Dan was a devoted member of the Kalamazoo First Assembly of God Church. Diagnosed with kidney cancer his initial response was concern for his daughter and yet eager to serve the Lord in whatever came his way. His faith never waivered...
David C. KURTZ

KURTZ, Mr. David C.
Kalamazoo
Died Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Bronson Methodist Hospital following a short illness. Dave was born in Kalamazoo, Dec. 29, 1938, the son of Jean and Clare Kurtz, and aside from a short period in Detroit, was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo. He was a 1957 graduate of St. Augustine High School where he was a member of the Varsity Club. Dave later earned his Bachelor's Degree from Western Michigan University, majoring in Speech Therapy, and then worked as a teaching assistant in the Speech Pathology program under Dr. Charles Van Riper. Dave struggled with cerebral palsy his whole life, but his spirit and determination served as an inspiration to his family and friends. Dave was able to live independently right up to the end of his life. He loved to attend family gatherings and would often entertain the family with his stories and anecdotes. He enjoyed fishing and watching sports, and attended many college and professional football and baseball games with his dad and brothers. He was also fond of movies and music and owned an extensive collection of Big Band and Jazz albums. Lake Michigan was Dave's favorite place in the world, and he often visited Saugatuck and South Haven where he had several favorite restaurants. Dave was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his six younger siblings, Stephen J. Kurtz (Carolyn) of San Diego, CA, Norbert M. Kurtz (Yvonne Seaman) of Lansing, John C. Kurtz (Karen Harrison) of Frederic, MI, Daniel R. Kurtz (Diane) of Brentwood, TN, Thomas J. Kurtz of Kalamazoo, Joan M. Kurtz of Houston, TX; many nieces and nephews. After the passing of his parents, Dave became the family historian and the main link to the Kurtz family's past, especially to the early days. For that and for his good humor, his easy laugh, and his grace in the face of adversity, he will be sorely missed. At his request, there will be no service. We love you, Dave, and we know you're now in a far better place.
JOLDERSMA & KLEIN
343-2628
Published in Kalamazoo Gazette on December 15, 2009 (Posted by a VOLUNTEER-NO family connection)
