Cedar Vale News, June 18, 1909:
From One Who Knew Him
William P. Armstrong was born July 29th 1821, in Ohio and after living a number of years in Ohio and Michigan came to Chautauqua county Kansas than(sic) Howard County, in 1872 and for most of that time since then lived either in Cedar Vale or close to this place. He died in Coffeyville Kansas, June 9th 1908 and was burried(sic) in Cedar Vale cemetery June 11th.
Mr. Armstrong had been married three times and the last marriage was with Margaret Garrett in 1880 in Cedar Vale, his widow survives him.
By his first marriage he was the father of Mrs Laura Lynch of Winfield, well known here, and of Mrs. Myna Symnes, relict of the late Dr. Symnes, who wasone of the pioneers of Cedar Vale. By his last marriage he leaves one daughter, Nora Armstrong, of Winfield Kansas. His people were Revolutionary heroes and their history is part of the early history of Pennsylvania and Ohio. They were sturdy progressive people and their lives have been a blessing to mankind. William P. Armstrong was a loving husband and a kind indulgent father and a sterling citizen whom neighbors and friends were legion. As a step son not bound to him by tie of blood I never knew him to have an enemy. I came unto close contact with him for thirty years and all through those years I remember him only as kind sympathetic and christian spirted. Ever indulgent with his family and his life leaves (sic) a fragrance which will grow with the years and his memory will even be green in the hearts of his friends.
For many years he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church but several years ago he united with the Deciples of Christ or Christian church and was of that denomination until death. To one who dies in the Lord as Father Armstrong died I feel like exclaiming with the poet.
"There is no death, the stars go down,
To rise upon some fairer shore,
And there in Heaven's jewelled crown
They shine forevermore"
Peace to his ashes

William was brother of my ancestor, Elizabeth Armstrong Dolph.
