William P. Armstrong

William Armstrong was born in Lacaster County, Ohio February 20, 1821. Died at his home in Coffeyville, Kansas June 9, 1909. Age 83 years, 4 months and 20 days.

He was married to Laura Dolph at Schoolcraft, Michigan December 18, 1844. To them were born five children two of whom are Mrs. Laura Lynch of Winfield (Kansas) and Mrs. Mina V. Symmes of Los Angles, California are living. In 1861 Mr. Armstrong's wife died and he was married to Mrs. Huldah (Collins) Moore in 1863. To this union were born three children of whom two survives, Albert Armstrong and Genevieve, of Vicksburg Michigan.

Mr. Armstrong came to Cedar Vale Kansas and settled on Rock Creek in 1871. He was married to Mrs. Margaret Garrett in 1880. One child was born to them, Nora E. Armstrong who is now living in Winfield.

Mr. Armstrong leaves a widow, five children, seven grand children and three great grand children.

He passed away Wednesday June 9th at 3:40 p.m. His death was a peaceful one, passing away as in sleep. He knew and spoke of his friends during the morning.

He was attended at his bedside by kind neighbors and his wife and step-son (Alva R. Garrett).

A short service was held at the home at 10:00 o'clock a.m. Friday and the remains were shipped to Cedar Vale where the funeral services, conducted by Rev. Torbert, were held at the Baptist Church at 1:30 p.m., Friday. The choir sang several favorite hymns and Rev. W. I. Torbert gave a very helpful talk on the text "Blessed are they who die in the Lord."

The remains were buried in the Cedar Vale cemetery as per Mr. Armstrong's request.

Those who accompanied the corpse from Coffeyville were the bereaved widow and her grand daughter, Mrs. Goldie Duncan of Coffeyville, Mr. Danial Kautz fo Cedar Vale, Mr. Albert Garrett her son of Russell, Kentucky and Mrs. Laura Lynch and four boys and daughter Maud.

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kautz of Cambridge, Ks. also attended the services at Cedar Vale.

William was brother of my ancestor, Elizabeth Armstrong Dolph.
