My great grandmother , Zora (Miller) Tanner, supposedly died in Jackson 2 Aug 1947. I have no record of her death other than the Leslie cemetery record book and her gravestone there.

Can anyone point me towards the next step to find a death record in Jackson? I want to confirm that she actually died there.

Thanks!

Dear T.Kerwin,

Read you email of 22 May 2004 Re: Backus family of Leslie MI, in reply to a query by Mike Pratt, to whom I am sending a copy of this email.

William had siblings Alertn born c1867, and Artie born c.1867.

William's parents were Almira or Alvina born c.1840/41 and James P.Backus born c.1828. There were three other siblings: (1) Edwin N.Backus of Jackson MI, born c.1848, married Mary A.Wilcox born c.1848 in NY state; they had a son, Nelson A.Backus of Freeport, born c.1870, and Bernene Backus. (2) Alta Backus of Lansing MI, married xxxx Brown and had a son. (3) Frederick Q.Backus born at Leslie MI 1853, married Celia Mixer 1876, died Lansing MI 1898, buried Leslie MI; Celia Mixer was born 1855, probably at Machias NY, died 1898; she divorced Frederick Q.Backus in the 1880s and married John Rush in 1895. Frederick Q.Backus and Celia Mixer had one child, Victor Lemuel Backus born Leslie MI 1872, married Matilda Elizabeth Stark of De Kalb IL in 1900, lived at Sycamore IL and Charter Grove IL in 1906, died at De Kalb IL 1911. Matilda Elizabeth Stark was born at De Kalb Il in 1874, moved to Midland MI 1933 where she died in 1967. Victor Lemuel Backus and Matilda Elizabeth Stark had two children: Burton Frederick Backus born 1906 died 1912, and Celia Berniece Backus born 1900 died 1989. Celia Berniece Backus was my wife's grandmother.

James P.Backus's father was Nelson B.Backus probably born NY state, probably died before 1870. James P.Backus's mother was Nancy Bugbee. Nelson B.Backus and Nancy Bugbee married c.1835/36. Very shortly after their marriage they settled at North Leslie MI in 1836. It is possible that they originated in Batavia NY as the other first settler of North leslie, who settled in the same year, weas from batavia and there is a slight concentration of Bugbees in that part of Genesee County.

Nelson B.Backus had a brother Harry Backus, born c.1823 definately in NY state. he married Abbigail (surname possibly Palmer) born c.1828 and settled in IL. They had three children: Perry Backus born c.1854, Alice Backus born c.1864, and Helen Backus born 1861 died 1941. Perry Backus married Fanny Standley in 1874. Helen Backus married xxxx Lacey.

Can we share information and stay in touch as we are working on the same family?

Best wishes,

Robert Protheroe Jones
Wales, UK

I have been looking into the Rice family at the LDS center in Jackson. I came across death records for Job, Jane, and Sarah L. Rogers. Do you already have these? Also I have been fooling around with the census to try to track down Sarah who married a Rogers. Is it possible that they lived in Genessee County? There is an Edwin Rogers and a Sarah L. Rogers with sons Ira Rogers and Edwin Rogers who possibly could be the ones you are looking for.

My aunt married a George Rice. He was born 1885 in Detroit. His dad was Jerry who was born in 1834 in Ohio. So I guess they are different families.

I have a strong clue for you:
In 1850, in Tecumseh, Lenawee, MI. there was a Simon and Mary Oliver born 1806 and 1810 respectively. They had several children of whom,I feel, one was her husband. I feel it is George Oliver. George was born in 1833 which is close to her birth. He is not around in 1860. But his brothers are. In 1860, some are still in Tecumseh while others are in Macon, Lenawee, MI.Their second child was George which fits, also.
I am interested in Nancy and Edward Rice and their line. Please let me know what you have on them, please

Hi Nancy,

Thanks for replying. Probably a bit of a long shot but was hoping maybe residents of the county, via the public library, might have access to the newspaper from home (sometimes it works that way - depends on the newspaper and the library subscribing to it etc.) and could do a quick copy and paste.

Jerry

Hello, I am trying to complete a part of my family tree that I know nothing about. It is my sons’ father’s side of the family.

The parts that I know for sure are that my son's father, his mother Teresa Kay Hunter (Though I am pretty sure that her maiden name is Stone 1946-2012.

I think that my son's grandfather might have had a sister named, but I am not sure on that at all. Though I am sure that his fathers name is Harold G. Hunter (1914 - 1987 in Jackson, Michigan

I also know that Ginseng has been in their family for many generations. It began with my son's grandfathers great-great-great Grandfather who, in 1812, married a Seneca Chieftain's daughter (would love to know who this is.) and became one of Michigan's pioneers in the Ginseng and Fur business. He worked for the A. J. Astor Fur Co., out of Fort Detroit.

Harold G Hunter, birth 16 Apr 1914 in Michigan, United States. Death 6 September 1987 in Michigan. Michael’s father, was a Ginseng Dealer for over 50 years.

I have seen a few family trees out there with who might be family, but the connections that I would know are all privet. And sadly I am not in contact with my boy's father or his family to ask for help from them with this. Thank you in advance for anyone that can help in my quest!

Beck.

Martin Grom's declaration of Intent filed 9/25/1919 Volume 7, Page 116. Petition for citizenship 3/22/1942 Volume 6, Page 90. I found this index on microfilm at the Jackson County Library. You might want to contact the Jackson County Genealogical Society to see if it's something that they can get for you. I'm only in town for meetings and I can't get to the clerks office during the day (library is open in the evenings.)

Jan S

Thank you so much for taking the time to share the census information with me. I do appreciate it!

FYI - his first wife's name was Carrie Percival - not Delia. I have copies of not only their marriage announcement which occurred on 11 Dec 1884 but also one announcing her death and the return of her remains to be buried in the Sunset Hill Cemetery in Clinton, Oneida County, NY in 1922.

I'm hoping someone might help me regarding where I might locate information pertaining to Dr. Walter E. SPICER (a ears, nose and throat specialist) who was originally from New York State and moved to Jackson County, Michigan around 1910. I believe he graduated from the University of Michigan in June 1884.

I have found him and his 2nd wife, Ellen (BENSON) living in this county on the various federal census records beginning in 1910 through 1940.

He had one known daughter named Martha Janette Spicer by his 2nd wife.

He was born in 1855 probably in Chenango County, NY one of 5 children born to Joseph Benson Spicer and Martha J. (RICHARDS) Spicer. Siblings included George R., Mary Nettie, Jennie Martha and Lena G. Spicer.

His 1st wife was Carrie (PERCIVAL) when he lived in Oneida County, NY prior to moving to MI. He may have had one or two daughters with this wife.

I'd like to find the dates of death and location of burial for both Walter and wife, Ellen and if possible, to obit a copy of both of their obituaries.

Thank you so much for any assistance regarding my post.

Kem

Hi Natasha,

I seen your blurb on Ancestry.com looking for info on F Carleton Lowdon. I don't have any info but i do have a very old silver pocket watch with FCL engraved on the back and F Carleton Lowden engraved inside.

I got the watch from My Grandmothers Estate (Marion [Mayette] Shea), not sure were she got it, but a name as rare as this it had to belong to him. She is from Jackson also.

Let me know if you would like to see a pic, or are interested in the watch.

Regards,
Rick Shea

rckshea2003@yahoo.com

Good morning. As you may have gathered my name contains two of the three names you seek. I was born in Jackson , in 1954, and lived there 30 years. My Grandfather was F. Carleton Lowden, and owned a section of land north of Pleasent lake, hence "Lowden Road" off of Meridian. You may wish to contact Natasha "Tasha " Lowden, my daughter. She has done a great deal of this kind of family work, see - natashavernal@hotmail.com ..

Good luck, Reed

No, he's not the one. I found him too. But my John Walsh was killed by lightning on 5/26/1907. He is buried in Hillcrest cemetery about 25 ft. from where "Little Mary" is buried. My sisters and I were able to walk to his grave last fall with one of the Hillcrest employees. It was pretty spooky but at least we got to see it. Thanks for looking!!!

The Jackson District Library cemetary books lists a John Walsh who died Aug 16, 1869 and is buried in St. John's Cemetary in Jackson. He was 51 yrs old. His father was Michael Walsh. His mother was Joanna Walsh. He was born in Ireland. Could this be the one you are looking for? If so, his death record could be obtained from the Jackson County Clerk's office.

have photos that I am trying to put names to. George Palmer (1820-1891) and Caroline Logan (1851-1893) had 11 children together. The two oldest died as children. This picture I believe are most of the siblings in about 1925. My great-grandfather Ennis Palmer (1873-1938) is the second from the left. I believe they are standing in order of age, so top row would be George, Ennis, Cora and Ira Palmer. I know the woman in the front row is Susan Palmer. Ideas on how to make sure I am right and also name the remaining siblings.

looking for names for this pic. The only people I know in this pic are the little girls in the front and their mother. Cleo Palmer (1907-1983) is on the left and Helen Palmer is on the right. their mother Minnie Gresley Palmer (1877-1926)is seated behind Cleo (you can barely see her face here). I think this is the Gresley family circa 1916. Any ideas on names for other faces? Or a way to get them?

Hey, let me know if you learn anything about this line in Parma, Jackson County, Michigan. I believe my great-great-grandfather was a "hired boy" on the farm where Charles and Mary Broxholm lived in 1880! I was just reading the census record tonight, and then I found your post. I wish I could figure out where everyone was in 1890!

Everett Broxholm was born Jan. 31, 1898, so his father Edmund was likely born in the 1850's or 1860's. My research so far has tracked down what I think were his brothers - Joseph, George (b. 1867 Canada), Charles (b. 1857 NY), John (b.. 1853 NY). They apparently entered the US, then moved from NY to Canada then down to Michigan.

I can find no record of Edmund.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks for checking, Jan. I believe I discovered why you did not find the obituary. I checked at Genealogy Bank to see what newspapers for Jackson are included. None of the papers covers the year 1959; in fact, many years are not covered at all. As an alternative, I wrote to the Jackson County Genealogical Society and requested a lookup for the obituary. I appreciate your help.

Joseph Martin
Romeoville, Illinois

I checked genealogybank.com and couldn't find anything for Pearl Schultz. Could it have been in Concord or someplace on the west side of the County. You might need to look in an Albion paper (Calhoun County). I checked genealogybank.com and found nothing for a Pearl Schultz in the Jackson papers, but they don't have any Albion papers on that site.

Jan S

Thank you, Jan. Her death certificate indicates she died in Jackson. I suppose the family might not have posted an obituary.

Joseph

Would someone be available to obtain an obituary for me from the Jackson newspaper? Pearl May Schultz died on 3 May 1959 in Jackson. I have emailed the Jackson County Genealogy Library but have had no response. I would be pleased to reimburse for parking, postage, and copying expenses as necessary. Please contact me privately off the board. Thank you.

Joseph Martin
Romeoville, Illinois
IllinoisGenie(at)gmail(dot)com

The Jackson County Genealogical Society has a fairly good collection of the City Directories. They can be reached at jcgs.library@yahoo.com.

I find Pearl Schultz at 334 W Mason in the 1959 Directory but no mention of Pearl in the 1960 or 1961 Directory.

My Pearl M. Schultz was in Jackson, Michigan, from 1942 to 1957, as located in the Jackson City Directories at Ancestry.com. The Ancestry collection stops at that year. Would anyone know if any later city directories are available and where I could locate them? She was 70 years old in 1957, and I wonder if a later directory might give her date of death, which I have not been able to locate at all. At this point I am assuming that she died there. Thank you.

Joseph Martin
Romeoville, Illinois
IllinoisGenie(at)gmail(dot)com
Thanks for that advice. It's just that is kind of what I am trying to do.You see that is what I was trying to do with seeing how the two Briggs families connect.I had thought somehow with knowing that George Washington Briggs one brother Charles H.Briggs marry a woman who happen to have her parents with the same maiden surname as his own grandparents Caleb Tracy Briggs and Elizabeth Morrill Briggs. That is could be another way for me find out just how two Briggs did happen to marry.

Marcin/Martin's passport application (stamped # 299823-issued 31 May 1923) shows that he was naturalized before the "Circuit Court of Jackson, at Jackson, Mich. on [left blank]".
The passport application is also stamped "Certificate of Naturalization Seen".

Thank you for any help in clearing this up.

jean
in Tucson
