CRANE, WELCH, COMPTON

I am looking for the obituary of Sarah Jane (CRANE) WELCH COMPTON, who died 6 April 1876.

She is a daughter of John W. CRANE and his wife Sarah/Sally JONES. Sarah lived in Berlin Twp., Ionia County in the 1850 and 1860 census.

Sarah was married 18 June 1845 in Lyon Twp., Oakland Co., MI to W. Simpson WELCH. They settled in Berlin Twp., Ionia Co., MI, where they had two children, one of whom was my ancestor Harriet Ann WELCH. Simpson Welch is believed to have died about 1851 while crossing the Mississippi River.

Sarah married the second time 26 September 1852 in Novi, Oakland Co., MI. Her second husband was William Harrison COMPTON, who died 7 April 1908, Shelby, Oceana Co., MI, and is buried there in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Sarah doesn't appear in any of the cemetery records in Oceana Co. I don't know where she died or was buried, but because she had lived in Ionia County, I am hopeful there was an obituary from a local newspaper.

If someone has suggestions, or is willing to look for an obit I would be very grateful.

Deb Eddy

Probate/death record lookup

I am searching for death/probate records for William Andrew Stearns b. circa 1830 in Hemmingford, Canada. His brother in law was prominent Ionia lawyer Benjamin Vosper and William is buried in Saranac so I am thinking William's records may be at the Ionia Courthouse. He had two living children at time of death- Isabelle and Chilton. I do not know where he died but my best information said he died in/around 1897. His wife Martha (Vosper) Stearns died in 1868. As a lumber dealer, he owned much property in Michigan and even out of state. If someone could do a search at the county courthouse or library I would greatly appreciate it. I have done alot of work researching this family but don't know how to do this kind of search. Thank you.
I am trying to find information on Mahala Arms (born in Canada) - She is listed on the 1860 census in Ionia County with Selah Arms as her husband and Selah (b. 1855) Earlier records had listed marietta Utter Griffin as Selah Jr's mother but she died before he was born - Selah, Jr. migrated to California - on one of the census records he listed mother's birth place as Canada. I am looking for any information on Mahala - I can't find her on the 1870 census - at least with the last name of Arms and I don't find her on the early marriage records.

Any information appreciated.

Susan

As a hobby, I rescue old photos that have identification on them, and attempt to locate family to return them to.

I picked up one in an antique shop, that was taken in Ionia, MI. It's of two young men, one identified as Jay Van Wormer & the other is Ben Wood.

It appears to have been taken in either the very late 1800s or the early 1900s.

For details on how to obtain this treasure, contact me at:
digginroots@yahoo.com
Kathy

My sister purchased a scrapbook at an auction in South Central Fla. She gave it to me in hopes that I could find the rightful owner.
There are alot of very old loose studio photos, but no names on them. Pasted inside the book are many newspaper articles about WW!!, some with pictures of soldiers from the Ionia area that were posted in the newspaper.
Some of the surnames are, Linsley.Hindsitter???. Harp, Palo High school, Howe,Gordon, Butler,1924 Christmas postcard to Butler at a S. Steele St. Address, from "Rena" in Colorada. Austin, Couzzins, Cobb, Geller, Goodsell, Mooney..
I would like to see this go to the people that the pictures belong to, but as I said they are not pasted in the book, only loose.
Patti
craftingmamaw@msn.com

Shively, in Ionia Co. Michigan, ~1860 to present

Looking for ancestry of Peter J., Daniel and William Shively of Ionia Co., Michigan. Peter was married and buried in Ionia Co. and I'm hoping someone may be able to access the records to see if there is any information on his/their parents. Here is what I have:

Peter J. Shively married Barrilla/Barvilla Ryder on November 20, 1866 in Ionia Co. Peter died in February 1913 and was buried in Highland Cemetery on February 8, 1913.

William Shively is listed in both the 1870 and 1880 census in Ionia. I cannot read the .pdf for 1870; in 1880 he is widowed and his mother Sarah is living with him.

Daniel is listed as marrying Rotilla Woodrough on November 27, 1884.

There are also marriage records for an Elizabeth and Mary Jane Shively, both in 1859 but I don't have any records of these women but would like the information if available.

Thank you for your assistance!

Kim
Mesa, AZ

SAGE, Edward R

I have been researching the origins of Edward R. SAGE of Ionia, County, Michigan.

He was first found getting married to Caroline A. BELL in Fallassburg, Vergennes, Kent, MI on 10 FEB, 1879. They were both residing in Keene Township, Ionia County at the time of the marriage. He is recorded as a farmer, born in Canada and 23 years old. She is recorded as born in Oakfield, MI and 16 years old.

The next time I find them is in the 1880 census where they are living with Caroline's parents, John and Olive BELL. Edward is recorded as 25 years old, a farm laborer and born in Canada. Caroline is recorded as 18 years old and born in Michigan. They have a daughter Rhuanne A. who is recorded as seven month old. The date of the census is 1 JUN 1880. Further checking, I found the birth for Rhuanne listed as Anna (16 OCT 1879) recorded in Keene Township. Edward is listed as the father but for the mother it states, "As returned by Sup.*". At the bottom of the page "* See letters of County Clerk, filed Sept. 10, 1880".

Now there is a gap of some 20 years (yes, that missing 1890 census) and the birth, death or marriage records of different individuals.

In the 1900 census for the City of Ionia we find that Caroline is a widow, 38 years old, with three sons: Samuel A. (b. JUL 1881), Lewis A. (b. JUN 1883) and Ulmont E. (b. JUL 1888). I have not been able to find a birth record for any of the three sons, a death record for Edward, or a marriage or death record for Anna or Rhuanna. I did find a Smyrna Cemetery Record for an Edward Sage with a date of death of 23 SEP 1894 but I do not know if this is the correct Edward.

With this background information and my knowledge of the Canadian SAGE's that moved to Ionia County here is what I am seeking. I am trying to determine who Edward's parents were. I am trying to find his death record. I am trying to find more information on Anna or Rhuanna.

Thank you in advance for any and all assistance that you may be able to provide.

William Morrison

Briggs.

I have a record of Arthur E. Briggs (son of Lathrop Briggs and Abbie Warren) marrying a Mamie Monks on Dec 24, 1896 in Ionia County. In 1900, Mamie Briggs is living in Ionia, Ward 1 (listing herself as married) and working as a pastry chef, Arthur is off in the Spanish American War (listing himself as divorced). When Arthur returns from service, he moves in with his mother. Mamie just disappears. In 1911, Arthur remarries.

Who is this Mamie and what happened to her? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have followed up more on Joel Dean who was born in Canada 1816 and who died in Berlin Twp, Ionia, Michigan 09 Sept 1864. But I am still not sure if he is a son of my Daniel Matthew Dean and the History of him done by one of his descendants has no clue at all who his parents were. I am wondering if someone there in Ionia County could help out by searching for an obit for him and/or checking the death register at the County Clerk's office? It seems there are some odd "rules"? regarding looking at the death records, but i do not understand exactly what it says. If the record tells me who the parents were, then I would like a copy, otherwise - no thanks.... ordering by mail costs either way, with or w/o information and I do not need to go that route... been there, done that.

Thanks for any help you can give; I have not found any volunteers listed for Ionia county which is the first thing I try, being on a fixed income these days...

Maggie Lawrence & Will McKeeby - Ionia Co., MI

I would like to know whatever happened to Maggie Lawrence who married Will McKeeby in Ionia Co., MI in 1893 (per LDS records). Maggie was the daughter of Cynthia Jane Bennett and Henry Lawrence. It it the Bennett line I am researching. Cynthia died in 1882 and is buried in Matthew Cemetery in Orange Twp, Ionia Co., Michigan. Maggie was born in Ionia Co. in 1876. Joseph Lawrence, whom I believe was her father-in-law, is also buried in the same cemetery.

Thank you,
Rebecca

The book, Portrait and Biographical Album of Ionia and Montcalm Counties, Michigan, was published in 1891 by Chapman Brothers of Chicago. On page 724 and 725 you can read an interesting account of John Miller. In this account it explains that he married “Marilla Brant, a daughter of Mason and Almira (Tobias) Brant, both natives of New York, who came to Michigan in 1844 and settled on as raw farm in Boston Township. They cleared this off and sold it, and then moved to another part of the township. In 1850 Mr. Brant became smitten with the gold fever and went overland to California and entered the gold mines. He started to come home and died in San Francisco. His wife is till living at the age of seventy-six years. There were the parents of seven children, five of whom are now living. Mrs. Miller was born August 30, 1836 in New York State.”

The book, History of Ionia County, Michigan, was authored by Elam E. Branch and published by B.F. Bowen & Co. of Indianapolis in 1916. On page 186-189 you can find a biographical sketch for Benjamin and James Vosper. It says they “having been born on a pioneer farm in Boston township, sons of Richard and Margaret (Brandt) Vosper, the former a native of England and the latter of New York state, early settlers and honored residents of this county.” Further along you can read: “Richard Vosper married Margaret Brandt, who was born in Wayne county, New York, her parents having been farmers living about twenty miles from the city of Rochester. She was the youngest of four children born to her parents, the others having been George, John and Mrs. Emaline Carveth. And further along: “Mrs. Vosper died in 1881, at the age of sixty-one years, and Captain Vosper survived until 1901, he being eighty-fur years of age at the time of his death. He and his wife were the parents of five children, as follows: Martha, now deceased, was the wife of W.A. Stearns, also deceased, and was the mother of three children, Isabelle and Chilton, both unmarried and living in New York City, and Richard who died in early infancy; Benjamin, of the firm of Vosper Brothers, Ionia; Mason, a lieutenant in the Union army during the Civil War, who was killed in battle during a charge on the Weldon railroad, near Petersburg; James of the firm of Vosper Brothers, Ionia, and Mary, widow of Aaron Clark, of Grand rapids, Michigan, who had three sons, Aaron V. and Lloyd, ranchmen of Colorado, and Arthur Clark, a resident of Ionia.” This sketch also states that: Benajmin Vosper married “Lucia A. Blanchard” and James married Livonia S. Holmes.
Shute Family in Ionia

The Shute family moved to Ionia some time between 1860 and 1866. I have derived the time frame from the 1860 census at which time the family lived in Nunda, NY. The 1870 census lists part of the family in Ionia, MI. My great-grandfather, George Herbert Shute, is said to have been born in Ionia in 1866. His father was Alonzo D. Shute and mother was Katherine Bez. I can find no documentation for these individuals and would love some assistance.

The rest of the family members are Albert D. Shute and his wife may have been named Almeria. Their older sister, Martha J. Shute, traveled with them from Nunda, NY to Ionia, MI and never married. Younger brother Horace N. Shute and his wife Rebecca had five children; Herschell, George M., Ida, Chester, & Iniz.

I'd like to know if there are any listings of my family in Ionia or the surrounding area either from newspapers or cemetaries.

Thanks for your time and your information,

Steven Shute

Joel Dean, born Canada 1816; died Ionia County MI: 1864

Today I received a copy of the “Joel Dean Family of Berlin Twp., Ionia Co., Michigan” done by ????? and in the year ????; which is to be found at the Ionia Public Library. It appears that it may have been late 1980s; there is a list of descendants/children of George, Harvey and Frank Dean and where they were living in 1983; copies of hand written letters: 1986 from a Cassie in Vista, CA to Margaret; one written 1987 from Myrtle to Margaret. I have identified Myrtle but not Margaret or Cassie as yet…

I was hoping this family history would tell me who the parents of Joel Dean (1816-1864) were, but the only thing I found was that he MAY have been the son of an Alphonso Dean who lived nearby…..

HOWEVER: Joel (“born April 3th 1816” ) is in the bible of my Daniel Matthew Dean who died in Ontario, Canada 1846/7, one of the last three children listed as “Great Grandfather’s family”. In the will of Daniel, a bequest is made to Joel who is not mentioned as a son as are his (other) sons and there is no relationship mentioned. Was he a nephew raised by Daniel????

Who is Joel Dean – has any descendant done research on him? I am thinking that if Joel’s parents are found, they may tell me who the parents of Daniel are; I still have not found them after so many years of searching and still have no clue as to where Daniel came from before Canada. I have tracked Daniel back to 1804 in Ontario but beyond that: nothing. I have been told that because of his birth (31 March, 1775) it is most likely he was not born in Canada….

If anyone can shed more light on Joel Dean, please do so….. we need help!!! I do know he married Maria Ware and all that, so all I really need now: his parents. Thanks!!

I'm looking for any information about the family of Sanford White (son of Stephen White) and Mary M Foote, especially about their supposed daughter Nelly White.

Nelly White (born 1882) married William F. Carter around 1899 or so, and appear in the 1900 Census living in Campbell Township near Sanford and Mary White, and with Sanford's sister and Nelly's aunt, Sarah Van Tassell, widow of Caleb Van Tassell.

Nelly died in Lapeer county around 1903 during child birth. The problem I'm having is that there is no really good record of her. In the 1900 and 1910 censuses, the number of Mary Foote White's children listed does not reflect Nelly in any way (2 kids, 1 still living; son Elmer and daughter Sarah, who died in 1890)

A 1909 Carter genealogy book lists Nelly's father as Sanford White of Campbell, Ionia, MI, but does not list her mother, or where and when she died.

The final mystery is that on my great grandfather's death record, his mother's name is "nellie harrington"

any ideas?

Can someone please tell me...what was the name of the local newspaper near Orleans Township in 1912?

Also...does anyone know who the caretaker is (if in fact there is one) for the Wheeler Cemetery in Orleans Township?

I am hoping to find an obituary for Hildur M. (Hale) Lane, who died about Apr. 19, 1912. She is buried in the Wheeler Cemetery in Orleans Township. Ionia County does not have a death record for her, so I'm hoping to find an obituary in the local paper, and hopefully that will lead to a death record.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Marianne
in CA

It said it was the second marriage for both and they had been married six years. I would like to get their marriage certificate once I am sure of the date they were married. I hope they were married here. She was listed as Edna May in later years and her maiden name was Darby and she was born in 1871. Her parents were Charles H. and Annett C. Darby.

Ernest George & Martha B "Mattie" Strain Anderson 1915-1976 in Belding

I am researching the family of my great great grandfather's brother, John W Reynolds. John W Reynolds was born in Hopkins co KY and moved with his parents (Thomas and Diadama Jackson Reynolds) to Grayson co TX right after 1850. John W Reynolds was a dentist in Sherman, Grayson co TX. Family history was that he was murdered for his money bag and thrown on the railroad tracks to cover the robbery. (This was confirmed by a poem written by his nephew.) We found his marker in Friendship Cemetery Grayson co TX. It is beautiful and in wonderful condition. I am now trying to find descendants. There are three DAR lines to him.

John W Reynolds (26 May 1844 - 25 Apr 1877) married Leona G Perry (born Mar 1849 daughter of Burrell and Elizabeth Perry).
They had two children, Lela Perry (30 Sep 1872 - 8 Apr 1893) and Teaton Perry (7 Sep 1876 - 8 May 1877 died at age 8 months, 2 weeks after his father's murder.)
Lela Perry married J D Strain and died at age 21. Both Lela and Teaton are buried with John W Reynolds.
Lela and John D Strain had one child, Martha B "Mattie" Strain (born 1893) (Martha was named for her aunt Martha Belle, I believe.)
Martha B Strain married Ernest George Anderson ( I believe in Ionia county between 1910 and 1920.)
Children of Martha and Ernest Anderson were Roy J and L Maxine (according to 1930 Census).

Leona G Perry Reynolds (widow of John W Reynolds) married Martin L Howe ( I believe in Texas about 1886).
They were living in Otisco township Ionia co MI in 1900 with Martin's stepmother Rhoda A Howe and Leona's granddaughter Mattie Strain.
In the 1910 Census J D Strain had moved from Texas to live with the Howe family in Michigan.
Martin Howe was the son of William R and Adelia Howe (listed on 1850 Census in Otisco Township).

Ernest Anderson was born in Otisco on 30 Aug 1889 and was living in Belding in 1917.
In 1900 Census, Ernest was living with his stepfather Byron H Rich, mother Maggie and brother Vern Anderson in Otisco township. The Howe's were on the next page of the census. He was a porcelain worker in the refrigerator factory in 1930 in Belding.

River Ridge Cemetery lists: Ernest Anderson 1889 - 26 Jan 1960 Lot 72 Sec 3 (husband of Martha B Strain Anderson)
John D Strain 1860 - 6 Dec 1925 Lot 72 Sec 3 (father of Martha B Strain Anderson)
Marvel G Brady 1913 - 1956 is also listed in this plot. ( I don't know this person.)(She was the wife of Loraine Brady and mother of Dewayne I Brady.)

I would like to find our cousins and share our picture of John Reynolds. Perhaps Roy J (b. 1917) or L Maxine (b. 1921) might still be alive. I feel Maxine's other name might be Leona or Lela.

Henry A. Coulson and Bertha Alzora Hartford

We have come to the conclusion that Bertha Alzora Hartford was the biological daughter of Uriah John Hartford and Catherine Harper but for some reason, probably because of her mother's death at a young age, was raised by my great grandparents Samuel Luther Hartford and Hannah Marie Howe.
Bertha also had a younger brother born in 1883 who died at 5 years of age. We found relevant information in the 1900 census for Ionia Michigan where it lists Henry A. Coulson her husband who was much older than her, Bertha and there first child Charles O. Coulson, it also listed Uriah John Hartford as father-in-law of Henry Coulson. We came to the conclusion that my gr. grandparents, Samuel and Hannah raised Bertha probably due to the fact her mother died young and her father was away as a fisherman. Bertha was never listed as survived by or predeceased by in Samuel or Hannah's obits or any of their children's obits, so we are assuming that she was the daughter of Uriah and Catherine. We have also come to the conclusion that there were two Bertha A. Coulson. One being the mother and the other being the daughter. Here is what we have:
Henry A. Coulson married Bertha Alzora Hartford may also have been known as Elizabeth and Bertha for short, daughter of Uriah John Hartford and Catherine Harper, raised by Samuel Luther Hartford and Hannah Marie Howe(uncle and aunt). Henry and Bertha had children: Charles O. Coulson, Harry Coulson and Bertha A. Coulson. I located Henry and Bertha's burials at Coulson, Bertha A. 41 yrs 7-27-1919 925 Coulson, Henry, A. 1927 Coulson, Victor 24 yrs 9-24-1948 1451
Lakeside (Lakewood) Cemetery is located in Section 34 on Cemetery Road in Lake Odessa, Odessa Township Ionia County, Michigan. Looking for any descendents of these three children to share further genealogy info with. We understand that Bertha A. Coulson married a Mitchell. Have a pic of Bertha who married the Mitchell. Any Coulson family from the Ionia Michigan area? Would appreciate anyone who could lookup obituaries for this couple from the Ionia Michigan area. July 27,1919 obit for Bertha Coulson and 1927 obit for Henry A. Coulson. Thanks.
