Hello,

Peter Clausen was my great grandfather. He had 2 sons - Harry & Carl. Harry had one daughter - my mother. Carl had 2 daughters.

Although there is a large momument and burial plot, Peter is the only family member buried in Traverse City- he was quite a well known man.

Sanne is buried at the Trufant Cemetery. There are 4 plots in that particular site. Also buried in that site are a young daughter, approx. age 14, and an elderly man who may have been her father. There are no markers on these graves and as far as we know, the 4th plot was not used.

Sophie & Rasmus Clausen, who we believe were Peter's parents, are also buried there. There is a marker on that grave.

Peter's son Carl is buried in Detroit.

This inquiry has certainly raised my curiosity - I assume that we are likely related somehow. Please let me know if there is additional information you may be interested in. My mother and one of Carl's daughters are still living. We would be very interested in the connections you've made so far.

Thank you.

Re: Benjamin HAINES (Hains). Julia Ann McMurtrie, 1880-1900

Thank you for your prompt and complete reply. Since my posting I have learned that Benjamin Hains's first wife was named Emeline, she was born c. 1824 in New York. Benjamin and Emeline may be found in the 1850 Federal Census for Junius, Seneca County, New York, with two sons Henry S. "Haynes" b. ca. 1847 and Levi "Haynes." Both sons are with Julia Ann and Benjamin in Marcellus, Cass County, Michigan in 1860 and 1870; Henry is with them in Grand Traverse County in 1880.

Julia Ann McMurtrie and Benjamin Haines were married 29 May 1856, probably in Three Rivers, St. Joseph County, MI. Her father was John McMurtrie (20 Aug 1795-12 June 1849) and her mother Julia Ann Bailey (1798-11 Sept 1871) both moved from Union County PA to St. Joseph Co., MI in 1844. Julia Ann McMurtrie's sister Mary Ann McMurtrie (13 Nov 1825 - 22 Jan 1878)was married to David S. Hale (13 Sep 1818 - 13 Nov. 1885)was probably, like Benjamin Haines, from Junius, NY; David had business interests in both Three Rivers and in Marcellus, MI.

Bill Walters

Now, I have found a third marriage for Minnie Freeman. This is Dec 29 1908. This time the parents are wrong.
Husband being George Lenderbeck. I find Minnie a servant in the 1910 census...cannot find in 1920...1930 cenus with her husband which says he is 35 and she is 60. In this census it lists her son Theodore Hollis a widow living with them. He is a Tailor which his records in the census say consistently. Are all three of these people the same. ...Very confusing
1st marriage...Horace Hollis
2nd...John Chapman (can't find him anywhere)
3rd...George Lenderbeck

Does MI have any state census?
These marriages are from Michigan records in the search pilot.

Andy

They are in Circuit Court Records, at the old county courthouse in Grand Traverse County. I have the indice at home but not the time to research for you. I have a deadline for 3 projects I am doing.

One client I am doing has an average of 2-3 marriages for 90% of the families.. many of them took their maiden names back and many took their 1st mar name back, especially when there are kids to make it simpler for them.

I searched newspaperarchives.com for these 3 people and only had one hit. Many times divorces are mentioned.

11 May 1907 pg 1 there is an article about Horace Hollis losing 2 fingers and a thumb on his left hand and two fingers on his right hand in a bolting machine at Interlochen (did this for 16 years).. it goes on to say he has a wife and 2 children to support and this has made him helpless. I would check and see if this is Minnie; who the kids are .. just to rule it out.

Maybe she went back to care for him?> or maybe she left due to this? who knows~

Brenda

Hi, Jno stands for John typically and could be Jonathan but usually John. I see the 2 marriages in familysearch.org but as you say they appear on the up-and-up. If she had married John and there was a problem she could have answered the census taker as if he did not exist at all. OR she could have just given the total years she had been married all together. I didn't look at the census but these are some things that happen. You might consider GT chancery records for a divorce.

This really a strange one. In 1890 there is a marriage record for Minnie Freeman marrying Horace Hollis. Then in 1898 another record for her marriage Jno Chapman. Not sure what JNO stands for.

However Minnie Hollis is in the 1900 census listing herself as married 10 years she has two sons and no husband listed. Can anyone possibly shed some light for me...Very confusing. I checked the marriage registers for a date error could not see one.

Thanks
Andy

But, you can call or write to Oakwood on Hastings St, in Traverse City. I don't have time to check right now but it should be on 411.com or switchboard.com.
Brenda
Thanks, Brenda. His parents, wife and one of his children are buried at Trufant Cemetery in Montcalm County. I have not been able to locate him there. His death record I found at Seekingmichigan.org cited Traverse City as his burial place.

Would you be willing to check your CD of Grand Traverse cemeteries for the names of:

Lars Rasmussen died 1907
Susan "Sanne" or Suzanne Jensen died 1930
Hans Jensen born abt. 1840

The death record for Lars Rasmussen cites Trufant Cemetery as his burial place, as well as that of his daughter Susan "Sanne" Jensen. I can find neither at Trufant and no records with that township clerk. Sanne's daughter married Peter A. Clausen.

I am at a dead end with my research for these 3 people here in Montcalm County. I know that they had ties to the Traverse City, Grand Traverse County area. No hurry on any of this. Thanks so much for your help.

Bryan

I have a marriage certificate for Wesley SHERMAN and Annie ALEXANDER who were married in Traverse City 15 August 1889. My research shows that Wesley was born in Danville, MI. Appears that Annie died young. He moved to California and died in Alameda County on 27 Feb. 1946. I found the certificate at a sale in Oakland and couldn't resist. Please contact me if Wesley, Annie, or their descendants are in your tree.

Vivian Kahn, Oakland, CA
vkahn@kmort.com

Was wondering if anyone would be willing to see if they could find his obit for me? I'd VERY MUCH appreciate it! Thanks!

H.L. CARTER, funeral director - business still exists?

H.L.CARTER conducted funerals in the early 1900's. My ancestor died in 1906 and I'd like to find the funeral home records for her if possible. According to her death certificate, her burial was in Marquette which I am pretty is incorrect. Her name was Mary NEDRY (1818-1906) and she died Nov. 3, 1906 at the Northern Michigan Asylum in Traverse City. I know of no close kin that lived in the UP. Is there a current funeral home that took over Carter's business? Or perhaps the Carter funeral home records are archived somewhere? Advice greatly appreciated. Jeanne Johnson

Hi, I just checked the CD of Grand Traverse Area Genealogical Society cemeteries and he is not there. The other option is the city/Catholic cemetery on E. 8th Street in Traverse City. The cemetery has been extracted and is in process of being reread but.. I don't have the database. I will ask the chairperson to check but it may be another day or so with holiday.
I am also an Ayers decendent from the peninsula. My great-great-grandfather was William Ayers. We've been out to see his old house before and to the cemetery where he is buried. My mom has quite a lot of information on the Ayers family and would be happy to share.

Teresa Simsa
Traverse City

Do you have any information on Ocie Mack who was listed on the list of deaths in Grand Traverse Co? I know she was born 4 Oct 1910, died 1 May 1977 and that she had lived in Rapid City, Mi. Do you know if she was realated to the Van family?

I'm trying to figure out the same thing. It is my understanding that many of the records are held by the Michigan State Archives and that the process is somewhat involved. Because of privacy laws, I am guessing you would have to contact the Michigan Department of Community Health. They will explain the process and then you take it from there. Their contact information is at http://www.michigan.gov/som . In most circumstances, I believe you would have to get a court order for the records.

I also found a discussion board relating to the hospital. It had very helpful information, particularly in the series of posts titled "re: grandmother". Those aren't current posts but have really good info. Here is the link to the discussion board:

http://pub13.bravenet.com/forum/static/show.php?usernum=1094...

Of course you can also post there yourself if you would find that to be helpful. Good luck on your search.
