Launa Cecelia BARRETT, 90

Launa Cecelia BARRETT, 90, of Charlevoix, passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Charlevoix Area Hospital.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at the United Methodist Church in Charlevoix. The Rev. Dale P. Ostema will officiate and burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Mackinaw City.

Launa was born Dec. 28, 1909, in Charlevoix, the daughter of Robert Ray Dorrance and Janet (NOWLAND) DORRANCE.

She moved to Mackinaw City with her parents at age 2 1/2 and resided there until 1989, when she moved back to Charlevoix to live with her son and his family because of illness.

Launa graduated from Mackinaw City High School in 1926 and then went on to continue her education at County Normal and Central Michigan University. She spent 32 years of her life teaching.

On Nov. 25, 1937, Launa married Ervin Leal BARRETT. He preceded her in death in August 1951.

As well as her extensive teaching service, Launa was an active member of the Church of the Straits, the Mackinaw City Women’s Club, Merry Widows and the Senior Citizens of Mackinaw City. She was a solid force in the community’s growth.

Launa enjoyed reminiscing about teaching and she was very much a part of her grandchildren’s lives.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Ervin and Melodie BARRETT, of Charlevoix; daughter, Janet GRAWEY, of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Mandi, Shauna and William BARRETT of Charlevoix, and George GRAWEY of Ohio; sister, Rayma WEIGER and her husband, Frank, of Midland. She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas R. DORRANCE; and a sister, Joan I. COSENS.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Launa C. Barrett Memorial Scholarships for Mackinaw City Schools. Envelopes are available at Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix, where friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today, Friday, May 5.
