Lots of ancestors in Norway

I seem to have lots of ancestors in Norway, Michigan. They are all of Belgium decent. I am wondering if anyone could tell me where I could find obituaries and cemetery information. Names such as: De Ridder, Vaerewyck, Vyt, Nuyts, Van Puymbroeck are what I am looking for. They came here between the 1890's and 1920's. I have lots of their names and know some death dates, I just can't seem to find obituaries or cemetery records. I would also like to see who is buried around them if there are any kind of lists I might be able to see.

Andrew G. Ovist of Ironwood - had my g-grandparent's Bible

My great-aunt Alice (nee Anderson) and her husband Andrew Ovist lived in Iron Mt. She had her family's Bible when she passed away in 1980. Before her husband could return the Bible to his brother's-in-law in Brantwood, WI, he too passed away (Mar 1981). They had no children and his next of kin was listed as Andrew Ovist of Iron Mt. I am trying to track down a relative in hopes that someone may still have my great-grandparent's family Bible. I have made a few unsuccessful inquiries in the Iron Mt area...any help or suggestions of how to track down the Bible will be greatly appreciated!

My great-grandparents were married in the M. E. Church which existed in Loretto, Michigan (Dickinson County) in 1901. The church must have had a cemetery. Although the church is gone, does anyone have access to the burial records? Does the cemetery (or any cemetery in Loretto) still exist? If so, would anyone be willing to look for data on tombstones there for the name "Fisher" and record it? In particular I am looking for "Fishers" who were buried in 1901 and earlier.

Thanks in advance.

On the ship manifest in 1907, he says he is going to Loretto, Michigan to his sister, but her name is hard to read - I think it is Louise. He married Domenica (Minnie) Castellaz, born 1888 also in Austria/Northern Italy. Her parents were Antonio and Maria. They came to Loretto in 1893. Her siblings were Margarita, Lena, and Andrew (Lena and Andrew were born in Michigan). Minnie and Giovanni married in Vulcan in Feb 1908 and had a daughter Catherine in November 1908.

Any information on any of these people would be greatly appreciated!!

Stanley GALUSZKA (1925 - 2002)

Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Homes

Stanley Galuszka

IRON MOUNTAIN — Stanley Galuszka, 76, of East Breen Ave., Kingsford, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain.

Stanley was born Oct. 29, 1925, in Chicago.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands.

For 40 years, Stanley had resided in Foster Care Homes and for the past 23 years he had been a resident of Elaine’s Haven House. He never received a visitor throughout those many years, but he did find the family he longed for and that was at Elaine’s. When Elaine’s daughter, Christy, was tiny, he would walk her to the bus stop for school.

Stanley enjoyed all the Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthday and all the various parties that all those at the home participated in with presents, cakes and special meals for each occasion.

He worked around the kitchen whether it was making sandwiches or doing dishes. He didn’t complain, but had that little smile always on his face.

In the latter years, he silently endured heart disease and emphysema. He and the other vets enjoyed their once-a-year dinner at the Elks Lodge No. 700 in honor of their war time service. He loved going out to eat.

Stanley called Haven House his family and is survived by Elaine, Bob, Christy, Stella, Muriel, Misty, Nilo, Steve, Matt, Conrad, Stan, Robert, John, Larry, Donald, Frankie and David. He will be greatly missed.

Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the arrangements.

NOTE: I didn't know Stanley personally... I read about 1000 obits a week and just ran across this one this evening and KNEW I had to post it to a website, hoping someone would be touched the same way I was when I read it. Stanley seemed like a very special person... God bless him and the caring folks in his life.

Parentage of Matilda J. Cowling born 1882 MI married to Thomas Hosking

I am trying to determine the parents of Matilda Cowling (1882 MI - 1961 MI) who married Thomas Hosking (1875 MI - 1961 MI). I think her father may have been William Cowling born March 1842 in England, who immigrated to Mchigan in about 1867. He is listed in the 1900 census, Michigan, Dickinson Co., Iron Mountain Ward 4 Dist. 60 with wife Mary born April 1840 England and daughter Christine October 1884 MI and daughter Kate December 1885 MI. In 1910 William, wife Mary and daughter Christine with husband William Hodgson are listed in Michigan, Dickinson, Iron Mt. Ward 4 Dist 65. (I believe daughter Kate married John C. Crago) William and Mary list their marriage as being the 2nd for both and that they have been married for 16 years. Therefore, wife Mary, may or may not be the birth mother to Christine, Kate and Matilda (if she is indeed their sister) depending upon whether the girls are going by their birth last name or the name of their mother's 2nd husband. In the 1920 census, Matilda and her husband Thomas Hosking are living in Wisconsin, Florence, Aurora Dist. 76 and Mary age 79 England is listed as Thomas' mother-in-law. Any help on this family would be appreciated.

I would appreciate help in looking up the gravestone of Henry P Myers, died 1906 and buried in the Foster City cemetery. I believe it is a Catholic cemetery. I would also appreciate knowing what is written on gravestones for his wife (Eleonore/Helen/Ellen) or children nearby. Children include Henry (b. 1850), Napoleon (1854) Eleonore (b. 1857), William (b. 1859) Moses (b. 1865) Henry II (b. 1868) or Peter (b. abt 1875). The only person I know for certain is buried there is Henry P Myers.

I would be very greatful for information on his wife, whom I have had difficulty finding information. Her maiden name is supposedly Cootware although she may have been adopted.

Also would appreciate any information on which newspaper most commonly listed the obituaries for that time.

Many Thanks, Jill

Ida's second marriage was to Peter Flansburg.

Clarence's first wife, Inga, had a daughter Lois. Clarence's second wife, Grace E Westover had Betty J, William R, and Mary Ann. I am looking for relatives of these families who may have photos and family information they would like to share.

I remember once visiting Skandia and Iron Mountain when I was a child.
Marry Trottie = Mary Trottier?

Apr 1864 in Canada m. 1881 (4 children, 3 surviving), arr. 1892

Napolion TROTTIER b. Jan 1884 in Canada, arr. 1892

MARRY TROTTIER* b. May 1887 in Canada, arr. 1892

Blanch TROTTIER b. Nov 1889 in Canada, arr. 1892

I'm especially interested in the MARRY TROTTIER listed. I have a sneaking suspicion this is the same Mary Trottier that married my great-grandfather Abraham DUPERRON of Centerville, Leelanau, Michigan in Lena, Oconto, Wisconsin on 22 May 1906...but I'm not sure. This woman is a brick wall for me. My Mary Trottier Duperron died in Wyandotte, Wayne, Michigan in 1951 and the records are a bit thin.

Does anyone know what happened to these five Trottiers from Waucaduh? Particularly Mar(r)y?

Seeking information about a French-Canadian immigrant John Chamberland (who may have used Chamberlain or Chamberlin spellings), I believe born in 1859 but probably used an 1860s birth year, immigrated about 1890, and married a Parmelia (unknown maiden name) around 1899, and is found in the 1900-1920 censuses in Norway, Dickenson, MI, where he is shown with a large family.

My suspicion is that he is Jean-Baptiste Chamberland b 1859 in St-Paul, Joliette, Quebec, but all I have to go on is a 1936 photo of him living in Wisconsin, and the only match on the 1930 census appears to be this John, who apparently moved to Marinette to live with his daughter after his wife died.

I have extensive information on other members of the Chamberland family that I believe he is a part of, and the photo is in a recent post on the Chamberland forum

I'm researching David Alfred Rattie and his family. David was born of French-Canadian parentage (nee Ratté) in Isle La Motte, Grand Isle County, Vermont on 8 Sep 1876. He and his family moved to Michigan circa 1879, first settling in Isabella County. David some of his siblings eventually migrated north to the UP & Wisconsin. He settled eventually in Norway and died there in 1964.

According to the Jackson Index, the Dickenson County Genealogical Society published a guide to Norway Cemetery that shows David, his wife Florence, a John J. Ratte and a Mrs. Rattie buried there. Can anyone confirm details about this family, especially grave marker information?

I would like to collaborate with anyone interested in this family.
Regards,
Chris
Edward and his son, William, are listed on the 1920 census as living in Norway. The 1900 census lists this family living in Iron Mountain.
Colantonio family of Iron Mountain, MI

Using US census, Ellis Island, and FamilySearch data, I learned Domenic Colantonio lived in Iron Mountain, MI (Vulcan Street), starting around 1894. He married Beatrice Cerasoli in 1900 just days after her departure from Capestrano, Italy. His son, Filippo (1893) arrived with Beatrice days before the wedding. Domenic and Beatrice had more children in Iron Mountain, ending with my Grandpa Louis Colantonio in 1914.

Domenic's parents were Vincenzio Colantonio and Maria Donemico.

Beatrice's parents were Gran Berardino Cerasoli and Veronica Defeore.

If you have any information regarding the Colantonio, Donemico, Cerasoli, or Defeore families of Capestrano, Italy, please let me know. Thanks!

Scott
Need info for LENA HOUG family

I have reached a dead end and I am desperatley hoping someone out there has the information I need. Here is what I know: My Grandmother was born in Dickinson County (Kingsford) MI in 1926. Her Parents were John Carlson and Lena Houg. Lena Houg was born in 1897 in Wisconsin and according to census records her mother was also born in Wisconsin. Her father was Sigworth Houg born in Norway. I am looking for information about Lena's mother however my grandmother has no information, not even a name. In 1910 the Houg family can be found on the Census in Hiles (Forest County) Wisconsin. Unfortunatley the members of the household do not include Lena's mother even though her father is listed as married and not widowed. I would be so thankful to anyone who can help me find the missing piece to this puzzle. Thanks!

Looking for information on three SWANSON siblings and what happened to them. About 1927 their father, John “Jack” SWANSON abandoned his three children in Dickinson County Michigan. The children were: Weldon born 1921 in Michigan, Clarence “Buster” born 1922 in Michigan and Ruth “Dolly” born 1925 or 1926. Their mother Ethel SUNBERG died in childbirth. In the 1930 census the children were living with their grandparents Abel or Axel SUNBERG and Matilda in Menominee County Michigan. All or some of the children may have gone to live with an aunt Esther MAUZY in New Jersey. Any information on happened to this family would be greatly appreciated.
Family lore is that my Great-Grandfather Joseph Bertelli b Italy ~1883 lived in Iron Mountan and worked there as a miner. I would expect his wife Sistelia Andromeda b Italy age ~34 and daughters Josephine b Italy age 5 and Lena b MI age 2 would also appear in the census records.

The family eventually relocated to Westville, Vermilion Co Illinois ca 1915.

The NORMAN family came to DICKINSON CO. from Sweden in the late 1879 to 1900 to work in the Iron Ore Mines. Many families such as NELSON, SWANBERG, LARSON, BERGDAHL, OSTWALL, ERICKSON, PETERSON, BRANBACK, AND JOHNSON came from the original NORMAN'S. I have a great deal of information that I am willing to share and I have records for many generations up to the present time. Most are still living in Michigan.

Dickinson Co, Michigan: m 1897 John Edwards and Annie Jeffrey/Jeffery

William Jeffrey and Lydia Wicks had a daughter, Annie
Jeffrey or Jeffery, born about 1878-9 in Michigan.
She married in 1897 in Norway, Dickinson, Michigan to
John Edwards born about 1869 England. He must have
died between 1920 and 1930.
The 1900 census states that Annie had had 3 children, only
one was living. This was William J. born March 1897 in
Michigan. The 1910 census shows William as 13 and she has
had three children, who have all died.
But then it looks like a Bertha (Hill?) age 31(widow) is her
daughter in the 1930 census.
There was also a Lillian age 8 and Ruby b. age 5 in the home.
Was John married before, and Bertha his child?
Is William the one married to Ada (Hammil), age33 in the 1930 census. They had a son James, who was 4/12.
It appears that Ada was the daughter of Fred Hammil
age 70, widower, and a sister to Earnest, 28, single man
in 1930.
Would like to learn what relationship Bertha had to the
family?
What became of William? children?
My great Aunt, age 97, would like information on the death of her parents. Her mother, Marie Verwimp Melbow, died around 1911 in Iron Mountian. Her father, Peter Melbow, drowned in the river while fishing around the year 1908. I am unsure what river, nor I am unsure where he was found several days later. My great aunt was born in Vulcan in 1905, with the name of Philomena Marie Melbow. After death of her mother she was raised and probably adopted, by her mother's sister, name unknown, but last name was Jorissen. Said she was from large family which was divided up after death of mother. Would like to know deaqth of Peter and Marie and if possible, any obit or newspaper article regarding deaths. Possible a news article when her father came up missing but was not found for several days.

Morris and Hilma got married in Sweden, I think. They came to Dickinson County in the 1880s. Morris was a blacksmith and the son of
W.F. (sometimes called Victor) Danielson and his wife Charlotta. Morris's parents lived in Stephenson, Michigan. He had a sister named Emma who lived in Iron Mountain and was married to August Johnson, a miner. Morris' sister Molly operated a boarding house for miners in Iron Mountain for awhile but sold the house to Emma and August when they were married. That house was at 704 Fairbanks St. Hilma Erickson Danielson/Donaldson's sister Helga was married to a Jacobson and they lived on Walker St. right behind the Johnson house. These three families
were very close: Danielson/Donaldson, Johnson, and Jacobson. If you are connected to any of these, please get in touch. Morris changed the family name from Danielson to Donaldson but it is listed both ways.

Would someone be willing to do an obituary lookup in newspapers of Iron Mountain or Norway, MI? I am searching for any mention of the death of BEATRICE CARRIVEAU. She died at Niagara, WI January 05, 1909. She was just over 1 year old. I have searched the Marinette (Wis.) Star Eagle of that time without success. I also searched the Dickinson Co. Obituary Search Engine. It may have been only a small mention in the locals column. I speculate there is a better chance that something would have been published in Michigan newspapers because it is much closer than Marinette. If anything is found I would appreciate a photocopy. Thanks for your help.
