I know quite a bit about John O’Donnell and his family from both US and Irish records. I know John was born about 1842 in Knocknaskeagh, Killedan RC parish of County Mayo, Ireland. He was the younger brother of my gr-gr-grandmother Ellen O’Donnell. He married Bridget McHale (1851-1919) in Keelogues RC parish of County Mayo on 18 Mar 1869. They immigrated to USA soon after in 1870. I have not yet found them in the 1870 US census.

Their 1st child was Anna O’Donnell born 2 Aug 1870 in Lathrop, Delta county of UP Michigan. She died in Norway, Dickinson, MI on 10 Oct 1926.

Their 2nd child was Mary O’Donnell born Nov 1871 in Delta county MI. She married Anthony Daley 2 Oct 1895 in Norway, MI. They lived later in Green Bay, WI. Mary died in Green Bay in 1924.

Their 3rd child was Edward T O’Donnell born 10 May 1873 in Maple Ridge, Delta county MI. Ed married Anna Hauser on 27 June 1905 in Norway, Dickinson MI. Ed was a mail carrier in Norway. He died there on 22 Jan 1939.

Their 4th child was Agnes O’Donnell born 17 Mar 1875 in UP MI. She married Thomas Gillick 16 June 1897 in Norway, MI and they lived in Green Bay & Kenosha, WI. Agnes died in Kenosha 15 Oct 1959.

Their 5th child was Julia O’Donnell born 24 June 1879 in Ishpeming, MI. Julia never married. She, her sister Anna and their mother ran the O’Donnell House Hotel in Norway, MI. Julia died in Norway, MI 14 Feb 1947.

Their 6th child was Katherine O’Donnell born 24 June 1881 in Menominee Co. MI. Katherine married Henry Ebeling in Norway, MI and they ran the Ebeling Grocery store in Norway. Katherine died in Norway on 11 April 1971.

Their last child was Theresa Helen O’Donnell born 11 May 1885 in Norway, MI. Theresa married Lewis Redwine 3 Jan 1914. They moved around quite a bit, eventually settling in Atlanta, GA. Theresa died there 17 May 1952.

Here is my personal brick wall investment in finding ANY document with the name of John O’Donnell’s mother >> Irish civil registration of marriage (recorded starting 1864) gave the name of the bride & groom’s FATHER but not the mother. We know from those civil reg. of marriages for John O’Donnell, his sister Anne O’Donnell and their brother James O’Donnell that their father’s name was Bryan O’Donnell. A tidbit of family lore allows us to deduce that their mother’s maiden surname may have been Browne. Here’s the kicker: The only document which would record the mother’s maiden name would be an American death certificate… and John O’Donnell was the only member of that family who immigrated to and died in the USA.
