St. Louis Family Search

I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about the St. Louis family that lived in Escanaba from about the 1890s-1970s. I know the parents were Joseph St. Louis b. abt 1858, & Maria Margaret Hjort b. abt 1867, but I do not know when they died. I believe they died in Escanaba. I know there were a total of 6 children, but I have limited information on them. Below is what I know of the children:

Angrea J St. Louis b. abt 1894
Harry Hjort St. Louis b. abt 1895, I believe he was in the military
Myrtle J St. Louis b. abt 1897
Joseph F St. Louis b. abt 1900
George St. Louis b. 22 Mar 1905, Escanaba, d. 7 Mar 1989, Ann Arbor, (I do not know where George is buried)
Stanley St. Louis b. 8 Dec 1910 in Escanaba, d. 22 Jun 1982 in Escanaba, buried in Lakeview Cemetery

If family stories are true, I believe that George and Stanley were U.S. Diplomats, but their parents and other siblings are a mystery to me, as well as where George is buried.

If anybody knows anything about this family, or has suggestions of where I could look for more information, I would really appreciate it

If you are a descendant of Aaron Miller (1834-1907) and his wife Caroline HOCKING (1840-1919) who lived in Escanaba and Gladstone, I'm looking for you. I am tracing all the descendants of Caroline's parents, Edmund HOCKING and Mary Ann RULE (several hundred found so far) and will gladly share information. Their daughters married into the PEASE, YOUNG and WILLIAMSON Families. If you are not a descendant but you know one of them that would be helpful also. Thanks!

PRATT, Anita Marie Lambert

Anita was the loving wife of Maurice Y. Pratt, deceased, and mother of Juanita Lockwood and Ernest J. Pratt. She is survived by Juanita; her four sons Daniel, Andrew, Mark Frenette, Michael Lockwood; Juanita's eight grandchildren; Ernest, his three daughters, Rachael Aguliara, Dawn Simms, Joanne Donavon; a son Tom Pratt; twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her sister Mary Theresa Johnston and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Anita was born in Upper Michigan and lived in Escanaba until the 1970's moving to Kalamazoo to live near her son and sisters. Anita and Maurice loved to travel and spent many winters with Juanita in Alaska, Colorado, Nevada and Southern California. Maurice died in 1993 and Anita continued to spend several months a year with her daughter. Anita had a stroke in March of 2007. She then moved to Hawaiian Gardens, CA to live with her daughter. Anita was an amazing mother, friend, and housewife. She did beautiful sewing, making many clothes, designing and sewing all of her square dance dresses and Maurice's shirts. They taught many square dance classes. Maurice was a great caller also. Anita created lovely embroidery pieces, crocheted lace sweaters, hats and afghans. Other interests besides family, traveling and square dancing were playing cards, bingo, playing the slots in casinos, fishing and painting. Maurice loved to hunt and Anita would join him to do all the cooking. She was a very good cook too. They had a camp North of Rapid River MI and went there whenever they could get away. Anita was very active in St. Anthony and later St. Thomas Catholic churches in Escanaba and St. Mary Catholic Church in Kalamazoo. Maurice was a Knight of Columbus as is his son, Ernest. Anita's ashes will be brought to Escanaba to wait for burial when the ground is unthawed. A memorial mass will be said at St. Thomas Catholic Church on Saturday April 12th at 11:00 AM with a reception following for family and friends in St. Thomas's Hall.
Published in the Kalamazoo Gazette on 4/4/2008.

Obituary Information: John Powers, pioneer resident of Escanaba (Michigan), died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James McCarthy, in Milwaukee (Wisconsin). He had been seriously ill for some time.
Mr. Powers was born at Mount Mellery, Waterford County, Ireland on June 24, 1844, and spent his early years at Waterford in the south of Ireland. He left Waterford on March 17, 1863, for Liverpool, England, and the next morning embarked for the United States on the sailing vessel Constitution. The voyage took 3 and a half weeks and he landed in New York on April 11. The cross country trip to Milwaukee took four or five days.He visited with relatives in Milwaukee for a time and during the summer went to Chicago where he was employed by what is now the Chicago and North Western Railway. I was during that same year that he first came to Escanaba. When Mr. Powers first came to Michigan he worked in the railroad company's freight office on the old Merchant Dock. This is before the railroad was completed between Escanaba and Negaunee and between Escanaba and Green Bay. He was working in the office when the first locomotive was unloaded from a scow at Escanaba. In 1872 he built a home on Ludington Street where the Kresge store is now. He was married to Ellen Coty, also an Irish immigrant on December 27, 1872, at Neenah, Wisconsin and they came to Escanaba on January 15, 1872, to make their home. Since 1927 he had lived almost continuously in Milwaukee with his daughter (Mary McCarthy)

I would appreciate a lookup and copy of the page 1 article of the Escanaba Morning Press of 10 October 1910 regarding the death of Mrs. George Valentine (born Elizabeth Ann Ross). This article was indexed on the MI genforum website by the late Dr. Lester Bazinet. I will be glad to reimburse for expenses encountered. A digitally scanned image would be quite nice, but any format will be appreciated. Thanks.

-Mike Lafleur

Thomas L and Ellen (Larson?) Smith of Delta Co

Looking for information on the children of this couple. They lived in Fairport, Sac Bay, etc.

Thomas L Smith was from Co Cork Ireland, and married Ellen Larson (at least I think that is her maiden name) abt 1855, probably in Canada. I've always thought it was Ontario, but one of the later censuses said both she & her dad were from Canada - Fr (Quebec). Her mother was Irish.

Thomas died in 1893. They had 11 children, 7 of whom survived to adulthood. I've identified several of them from census records ... the eldest, Louise Margaret, is my gg grandmother. She was born in Canada in 1857.
John, 1859, was born in WI
Francis/Frank, 1861, MI
Ellen Catherine? aka Kate, 1864, MI
Charles, 1868, MI
Thomas Washington, 1870, MI
Henry, 1873-74, MI

I have been unable to identify the other 4. I'm not even sure what happened to the other siblings, since I can't find marriage records for anyone, nor death records. Ellen lived with Henry up til about 1910, and he was single at that time. I seem to remember someone finding an obit for me previously, stating that she was living with a daughter when she died in Thompson, Schoolcraft, in Jan of 1913. It also gave her parents names, which were hard to read, but I have as Franz Larson and Fern Chase. I don't think these are right, since I've been unable to find any trace of them in the 1851 Canadian census.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer. I've been stuck at this brick wall for close to 10 years now!

Tiffany Fugère
Hello,

I am looking for the descendants of Medrick (Fred) Gereau/Giroux and Sarah Bonche Fluette. They had four known children (at least at this point in time): Anton born in 1907, Richard, Rudolph and a daughter, Sarah or Sally. According to court records, Sally and her brother (unsure of which one) were living in muskegon, MI in 1946 when Medrick died. Unknown where he is buried, but I would guess probably in the Nahma cemetery. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you,

amy belanger

Lauritz is my grandfather and emigrated to the US from Odal, Hedmark, Norway in 1910. The Dahl name was chosen on arrival to the US. Some of the family may have used Dahl, Dahli, Dahle, Olsen. Lauritz came to the US with his brother Ole, and a nephew Carsten Andersen. I have located 16 generations back in Norway. Lauritz married Sophia Wilhelmina Carlson bd 26Jun1893 from Varmland, Sweden. There were many brothers and sisters, some were in Gladstone. I will appreciate hearing from anyone who has information, and will share information that I have.

Kibby Family in Escanaba, MI

I'm looking for information on the family of Margaret "Maggie" (Seymour) Kibby who lived in Escanaba, Delta Co., MI in the 1920's and prior.

Margaret "Maggie" (Seymour) Kibby was a sister of my GGGgrandmother, Ida Seymour, whose parents I have unsuccessfully been trying to locate for quite some time. Other siblings of these two were Mary (Seymour) Bizner who later lived in Gladstone, MI, Emma (Seymour) O'Dell who later lived in Green Bay, Brown Co., WI, and Delia (Seymour) Roleau who lived in Neopit, Menominee Co., WI. So I am trying to find the parents of Margaret "Maggie," Ida, Mary, Emma, and Delia Seymour who were originally born in Plattsburgh, Clinton Co., NY and who migrated to Wisconsin with their parents (presumably) in approximately 1857 or 1858 initially settling in DePere, Brown Co., WI.

Any help would be much appreciated. I do not know the name of Margaret "Maggie" (Seymour) Kibby's husband or whether she had any children, nor do I have birth/death dates for any of these Seymour children except Ida: Ida Seymour was born 9 Apr 1843 in Plattsburgh, Clinton Co., NY and she died 24 Aug 1925 in Sturgeon Bay, Door Co., WI. She married Jean "John" Houle and she and her husband lived first in DePere, Brown Co., WI before relocating to Sturgeon Bay, Door Co., WI in approximately 1868.

Thanks to anyone who can offer assistance or who possibly connects into this line.

Take care,
Stephanie Sampson
Los Angeles, CA
FamilyTresearch@hotmail.com

need info Charcoal Kilns on the Garden Peninsula

Hi, my name is Mike Delaney. My wife Vickie and I have been researching and field researching the 19th Century Iron Smelting industry in Michigan for an extensive book project for 6 years. We have located and visited every furnace site on both peninsulas and now have gotten into the associated Charcoal Kiln operations that these iron furnaces employed, some at the plant site and some miles away to supply the fuel for the smelting operations. We have by research roughly located 10 charcoal kiln sites on the garden peninsula and 1 in Isabella that were satellite operations of the Jackson Iron Company at Fayette. We are visiting the peninsula on the weekend of August 5,6,7 to do field research on these sites and what if anything remains. The kiln sites areas we have targeted are Kates bay area, Garden Bay, Puffy Creek, South Bay area, Section 9 just south of Fayette, Mud Lake, section 29 on south end of peninsula, Sac Bay, Section 5 at Summer Island near fairport, and section 23 on the old Arnie Rochefort farm(souoth end of peninsula).
The sites if anything remains would be large stone circles about 20-30 feet in diameter maybe a few feet high, several in number. We would greatly appreciate any tips, clues, sightings, contact info on these sites, condition, locations etc. Bear in mind we access permission if these are on private land before proceeding to investigate. All information received will be credited and documented to those who donated it. This infomation when this book is completed will be an historical record so any scrap of information or contact info is vital. Contact me(Mike or Vickie Delaney) at 734-241-1305 or msd1955@comcast.net or post reply on this board. Many Thanks!!!
HOLY CROSS CEMETERY Delta Co. Look-up

I am hoping that someone could take photo's of the following grave sites.

Located in section 1, north on M-35, and east of Portage Creek, City of Escanaba, Delta County, Michigan. The land was first purchased by St. Joseph Church in 1889 and was for the exclusive use of St. Joseph Church members. In 1893, St. Anne's Church purchased land adjoining that of St. Joseph from Peter Semer for the use of its church members. In the early 1900's, St. Patrick's Church also had a designated cemetery area near St. Joseph and St. Anne's. In 1947 the cemetery was re-organized and at that time was named Holy Cross Cemetery. It is active and operated by the Catholic Diocese of Marquette. This index is created from the cemetery interment books one and two, date from 1944 to 1994 and tombstone readings (marked with an asterisk).

Surname	Given Name	Book	Page	Lot	Born	Died	Comment
Sauter	Caroline *	1	3	J 1882 1912
Sauter	Florence * H 1884 1960 Mother

Sauter	Lena * H 13 Jul 1879 30 Oct 1966
Sauter	Lena Miss 1	95
Sauter	Val Mrs. 1	62
Sauter	Valentine * H 1874-1927 Father

Thanking you in advance.
Sincerely, Kathleen
Greetings from Salem, Oregon.

I am running into problems with my research per my Great-Grandmother, Marie (Mary) Josephine" LaFramboise (b. 15 Feb 1858) who was born in Marinette, but seems to have spent time being raised in Escanaba, Bay de Noc, Gladstone areas, and Green Bay, (Bay Settlement, Town of Scott). The surnames mentioned were intermarried with one another. Problem is Jean Baptiste Laframboise b. 1826/17, Josephines' father seems to have a problem with "who" his father was. It's written in "The Wisconsin Creoles" as Pierre, yet shown in other records I am told, as M. Joseph Laframboise (b. about 1770) who married Veronique (Koekoseque) Menominee "Monique" (b. about 1785). Then it's written as Louisa Magdelaine's gf as "Francois" Laframboise. (Louisa was Josephine's sister.)

So, are there any Chalifoux, Brunette, Maccabee, Martin, Bernard, Laframboise, Rousseau, or Champagne families out there that may be able to help me out?

Thank you,

Karen

He married abt 1883 MAH-THEN-NE-AH-QUAH b. 1862.

i. Frank b. 13 Aug 1885 Brown Co., WI
ii. Regina b. 23 Apr 1887 Brown Co., WI
iii. She was 11 according to the 1930 census.
I don't know if they had any more children or not.
I would like to find out when James died and is buried, but also when he married Olive and what Olives maiden name was. Of course I welcome any information on Olive because all I have is her name and an approx. birth date.
I am hoping to find out what happened to Bevery JONES, their daughter. They lived a long way away from the rest of his family. Wondering if maybe Olives family were up there.
If anyone can help me locate some information I would appreciate if very much!
Cindy (o;

I have located a marriage record the above couple in Delta County. It is believed Frank Olson is a brother to my grandfather Gustav Edwin Olson who lived in Duluth, MN.

Looking for any family connection to Frank and Minnie. Are there any newspapers on microfilm that might list their marriage.

Also there was a Nels Olson family that lived next to Frank in the 1910 census. Are Nels and Frank related? Nels married Matilda Anderson in 1892 in Escanaba.

Frank can be located until the 1930 census. Are there any death records, online or otherwise to locate when he died, assuming he died in the area.

thanks for any direction. Totally new lead to me so unfamiliar with the area and the records available for Delta county.

Sue

Hi, I am looking for information on my gr-gr-grandmother Ellen (Isabella Taillon) LaFlex (AKA Fex, Fexe) b 7 June 1925, Glengarry, Upper Canada.
A lot of her family moved to Clark County, Wisconsin and we thought that is where she died but I found a note in some of our family things that said she had moved, in 1897, to live with her daughter in Escanada, Michigan. That daughter may have been Bridgette Fex and she married Joseph Dupuis.
We know she died 15 October 1903 but are unable to find where she is buried.
Are there any cemeteries on line for this county?
Appreciate any help.
Thanks so much.
Take care, Darlene
darlene.poppe@adelphia.net

Does anyone know any of the Moreau's in Michigans UP? My grandfather was born in Menominee and I think his family lived in the area of Menominee or Delta county. I know that in 1903 he was the manager of the Scott Hotel in Houghton or Hancock and I suspect he was born in the 1880's but not sure.
He died in 1918 in the flu epedemic and he died in Minnisota where I think he was on a business trip. He was married to Maude Lewis and they had 4 children, however only two survived my dad Joseph and my uncle Ralph.

Any information would be appreciated.

Look up Help

I've just recently discovered my father's family in Bay de Noc and am very excited about this since I knew absolutely nothing. I have located them on the 1920/1930 census. The family name is Christianson (sometimes misspelled as Christensen). Can someone look up in the Delta County Birth Index 1867-1915 the following three names, I have the book and page number.

1) Earl Kenneth Christianson D 79 (my great grandfather)
2) Gladys E. Christianson D 274
3) Loyde Christianson D 180

The family I'm researching is as follows: John Christianson married Ellen K (unknown surnname) in 1907. Children and approximate dates of birth are as follows:
1) Earl Kenneth 1908
2) Loyde H. 1909 died 1940?
3) Gladys E. 1911
4) Dorothy V. 1912
5) Elaine L. 1914
6)  John S. 1916 (perhaps died before 1930 as not found on census);
7) Ethel?? M. 1918
8) Harland 1921
9) Bertha 1924

Thank you in advance for any help. I have been to the Delta County Historical Web site. It was great.

Gina Marie Williams in Connecticut

Was wondering if anyone had any info on these surnames? The Duerrs and Fuhrman families came from Germany, and the Strassers from Switzerland. Jacob Strasser married Verna Fuhrman in 1865 and had 5 children. One of them was Herman Jacob Strasser (1872-1952) he married Carrie Duerr (1882-1954). Her father was Fred Duerr married in 1880 in Germany to ???. Herman & Carrie had 8 children before they moved to Turtle Lake,WI in 1916/17. They had 3 more later on. As I understand it, they had lived in Perkins. Any leads would be greatly appeciated. Thankyou! - Scott

I'm looking for any information on Nic Reiter and Maria Ludowese who were married in Escanaba-Delta-MI on 10-APR-1871 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Nic's surname is spelled "Riter" in 1870 Delta Co.[MI] Fed. Census. Maria's surname was spelled "Ludervise" on the marriage certificate; but I did not find her name in the census. They migrated to Alton-Sioux-IA by 1879. Three children were born in MI: Rose Theresa [23-JAN-1873], Michael [01-MAY-1874], and Mariam Elizabeth [02-JUN-1877]. Thanks!

His older brother Peter Duranceau married Adrienne's older sister Mary Ann Barron approx 1868. Charles & Adrienne owned a Tavern/Hotel outside of Escanaba Michigan. Peter had a Tavern in Escanaba. Peter & Mary Ann's son's did not stay in the Upper Pennisula. Charles & Adrienne's son's never married so the family name died in our area. Any info anyone has would be greatly appreciated.
