I need to know the exact location of the Stephan family
cemetry on Stephan bridge road.I do thank the source who
told me it was just before the bridge if you were coming
from the north.I must apologize because I did not see it.
Is it on private Stephan property? public property?
Is it around the area of Gate's lodge? This is very important to me as Peter&Helen(Thinnes) Stephan were my grandfather's
great grandparents.My grandfather's grandparents were....
Reuben&Jeanne(Stephan)Babbitt. So any info on the exact location would be very greatful.
Thank-you
Renee Butka
grbutka@yahoo.com

I found a date of marriage record for June 21, 1913 for Mike Penhertor age 22 and Anna Petz age 24 for Greyling, MI both of them born in Austria. Mike's father's name is listed as Juedov Penhertor and his mother's maiden name looks like Malanker and it says she was deported. Anna's father is Joseph Petz and it says her mother's name is Caroline. It says she was deported also. It looks like Witnesses are listed as M. (can't make out the name)and Josephine Zerr, Zan or Zar or Zav. It is difficult to read some of the names.

Armstrongs in Frederic, Grayling area?

Hi all!

Their is an Armstrong homestead that, as of fifteen years ago, is still standing in Frederic. After my grandfather retired he and my grandmother lived for several years in Grayling, the back yard of their house was against the Au Sable. The geneology is a little twisted because there were two alfred armstrongs, to the best of my knowledge, one was the product of Wealthy Armstrong's previous marriage and was adopted by my great grandfather, the other was the product of my great grandfather's first marriage to a woman who is unknown. I know my grandfather was Alfred. I don't know which of the two he was, as the names change quite a bit in census records and whatnot.

Does anyone have any clarifying information on this?

Hi Kristine,

I have the following pertaining to Victor SALLING:

The following information extracted from the Grayling, Crawford Co., MI Newspaper Avalanche. NOTE: The date at the end of each extract indicates the date of the publication:
-MARRIED-On Saturday evening, Sept. 8th, at the residence of N. P. SALLING, by Rev. J. W. TAYLOR, Mr. Victor SALLING and Miss Christina HANSON, all of Grayling. The happy couple have the sincere congratulations of the AVALANCHE. "May they live long and prosper." (13 Sep 1888)

-BORN-Monday, the 8th., to Mr. and Mrs. Victor SALLING, a daughter. (11 Nov 1897)

-BORN-Monday, April 23, to Mr. and Mrs. Victor SALLING, a son. (26 Apr 1900)

-DIED-Wednesday, March 20, the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor SALLING. The bereaved parents have the deepest sympathy of the entire community. The older children were attacked with Scarlatina several weeks ago, and one after another was stricken with the dread disease, the baby being the last. As a sequale, an absess formed back of one eye, which was destroyed, and finally its suffering was relieved by death. (21 Mar 1901)

-Born-Saturday, June 28th, to Mr. and Mrs. Victor SALLING, a daughter. (3 Jul 1902)

-V. SALLING and family are enjoying a visit from his cousin, Mr. N. LINDHOLM of New York. (25 Feb 1909)

-Miss Elizabeth SALLING returned Monday from New York. Her sister, Miss Marion, who was with her will remain in Detroit and attend the Thomas training school. (21 Sep 1911)

-Mrs. Fred BURDEN of Detroit, cousin of Victor SALLING spent Saturday and Sunday at the home of the latter. (22 Aug 1912)

-Last Monday, September 8th, occurred the twenty-fifth anniversary day of the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Victor SALLING of this city. No pretense at celebrating the event was made by the members of the family, however a number of their many friends came in during the evening to express their congratulations and help make the day enjoyable by their presence. Victor SALLING and Christine HANSON were united in marriage on September 8th, 1888, the ceremony taking place in the house now occupied by Robert REAGAN. They were attended by Miss Alice BUTTLES and Albert GROULOFF. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. J. K. HANSON, Carl MICHELSON, J. K. BATES; Mr. and Mrs. Andrew PETERSON; Mr. and Mrs. Louis JENSON. The event of last Monday night brought back pleasant memories of that wedding day a quarter of a century ago. (11 Sep 1913)

-Miss Elizabeth SALLING, who graduated last month in the course of music and drawing at the Ferris Institute is visiting this week at Standish. She has already an opportunity of accepting a desirable position as teacher if she chooses to accept.
I extracted the following information, pertaining to A. Cutter, from the Grayling, Crawford Co., MI Newspaper Avalanche. NOTE: The date at the end of each extract indicates the date of the publication:
-FREDERIC CORRESPONDENCE.
Mr. A. CUTTER, the blacksmith at DeWard, died last Tuesday. He had been at this place, Sunday, accompanied by his two boys, riding back as far as the gates in a sleigh. He had something of a load of provisions to carry, and the boys, going ahead arrived at home all right, notwithstanding the terrible storm. When late in the evening the father had not arrived at home, a searching party started out to look for him, finding him at five o'clock, Monday morning, in a badly frozen condition. It is thought, that he fell in an appoplectic fit, and was unable to battle against the storm and cold. The remains were brought here for interment in the Maple Forest cemetery.
Hi Debbie,

I extracted the following information pertaining to your family from the Grayling, Crawford Co., MI Newspaper Avalanche. NOTE: The date at the end of each extract indicates the date of the publication:

-Married-June 10th, Mr. Alexander WEBB and Mrs. Lizzie LaFAVE. Justice Woodburn officiating. (13 Jun 1901)

-A quiet wedding was solemnized at St. Marys church Tuesday morning at 7 o'clock, Rev. Fr. J. J. RIESS performing the ceremony, when Florence VANASSE of Johannesburg and Joseph NEPHEW of this city were united in marriage. Miss Mary PAPIN acted as bridesmaid and Mr. Elmer VANASSE, brother of the bride, as groomsman, both of Johannesburg. The bride wore a white satin costume and picture hat and the bridesmaid the same. They took their wedding breakfast at the home of the brides cousin, Mrs. Mose WOODS and left for their wedding trip the same afternoon. They will reside here upon their return. (23 Jan 1913)

-The infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Mose WOODS passed away Tuesday morning. Interment was made in Elmwood cemetery Tuesday afternoon. (24 Sep 1914)

- Revigny, France.
Nov. 27, 1918.
Mrs. Lizia LaFAVE,
Grayling, Mich.,
Dear Grandma:-
It is with great pleasure that I answer your most kind and welcome letter, which I received today, and I was more than pleased to hear that you were all well, as this letter leaves me at present.
Well, Grandma we are having pretty bad weather here now, but I guess it is the same all over in the fall of the year, but we have it better now. When it rains we are in barracks; we don't have to sleep outside anymore. Well, Grandma I am glad to know that you had such a nice visit and such a long one, and I suppose you saw everybody you knew; and now the next one you will see is me and I don't think it will be very long before I will be there. I was going to send you some money for my farm but I am thinking that we are gong back and I thought I would wait and bring it myself, but I don't know when I do get back I have to celebrate a little.
I suppose Phil is home by this time and lots of other soldiers. I got that letter you sent me that Phil wrote, and it seems funny that he didn't get any mail from me because I wrote him often, but didn't get any answer. I don't know but I think there must have been something wrong with the mail here, because I haven't got a letter for about six weeks until today.
Well, I will tell you about a few of the fronts that we have been on. We had some hard battles; the first was Tool, then we were on the Alsace front. That was a trench war affair. From there we went to Soissons. That was the start of open war and hard battling. From there we went to Chatteau Thierry, and gave them H--- there for about seven weeks, and then we moved to Verdun, that was our last front. It was the hardest fighting we ever had, and that's where we made them quit. One day we brought down seven planes that were right around where we were, and we fought with the best soldiers that Germany ever put up, and we sure did fix them.
Today is Thanksgiving Grandma, and I sure would like to be with you for dinner. I suppose you will have lots of good things, but I guess we will have the same when I get there.
Well, I don't know of anything more to say I guess I will have to close for thsi time. So good bye-bye. Answer soon as you can. Hoping to see you all soon.
From your Grandson,
Corp. Daniel KAVANAUGH,
Battery F, 119th Field Art.,
American Expeditionary Forces. (26 Dec 1918)

-Mose WOODS who has been employed in Detroit is home again and has resumed work at the Grayling Dowel & Tie Plug Co. (15 Jun 1922)

-AGED LADY DIES.
Mrs. Liza LaFAVE passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs. Mose WOODS at the ripe old age of 87 years. An illness together with her advanced age has kept her to her bed most of the time during the past year. In July she came from Standish to Grayling to pay her daugher Mrs. WOODs a visit, after having been ill for some time, and soon after coming here suffered a relapse. At 8:30 o'clock Tuesday morning of last week she passed away amidst her children, who watched constantly at her bedside. The remains were taken Wednesday night to Standish accompanied by relatives and the funeral was held at 10:00 on Thanksgiving day from the Catholic church, with interment in the Standish cemetery.
Liza BOURDOW was born in Ontington, Canada, July 24th, 1835. Some time before coming to Michigan, which was in 1874, she was united in marriage to John LaFAVE. To them were born six children, five of whom survive. On coming to Michigan the family settled in Zilwaukee, where they remained for several years later moving to Standish, where they purchased a farm and lived until Mr. LaFAVE's death in October, 1906. After her husband's death Mrs. LaFAVE sold her farm to her son Nels LaFAVE, who still resides on it.
After leaving Standish Mrs. LaFAVE with her two grandsons resided in Johannesburg for a short time later coming to Grayling, where she has since resided.
Mrs. LaFAVE ws a kind and loving mother and was ever ready to help those in need. When her daughter, Mrs. Minnie KAVANAUGH was called by death leaving two small sons, Mrs. LaFAVE took it upon herself to rear them to manhood. They are known as Philip and Dan KAVANAUGH. Their father had also died when they were young. Mrs. LaFAVE was loved by her children and given every comfort in her last hours.
Three sons and two daughters survive the deceased, Archie LaFAVE, who is ill with paralysis at a hospital in Detroit, and was unable to be in attendance at the funeral; Nels LaFAVE of Standish, Mrs. Henry VANASSE of Detroit and Mrs. WOODS and Alfred LaFAVE of this city, and an only brother Alfred BOURDOW of Saginaw, besides 20 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. (7 Dec 1922)

-Alfred LaFAVE died at the home of his sister Mrs. Mose WOODS on Park St. Saturday night at 10:30 o'clock. He was 52 years of age. The remains were taken to Standish Sunday night for burial. The funeral was held Tuesday morning at 9:30 o'clock. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Grayling. Besides the WOODS family, Mrs. Henry VANASSE, sister of the deceased, and daughter Miss Elsie, were in attendance at the funeral. (4 Sep 1924)

I hope this information is useful to your research.

Louis

I found the following information in my "Avalanche" database pertianing to your BURROWS family:
The following information extracted from the Grayling, Crawford Co., MI Newspaper Avalanche. NOTE: The date at the end of each extract indicates the date of the publication:
-Mrs. P. BURROWS arrived last Saturday afternoon from Flint for a visit with her sons, Arnold and Harvey. (24 Oct 1912)

-Mrs. Arnold BURROWS and baby Merton returned home last week after several weeks visit with relatives and friends in Cheboygan. (17 Apr 1913)

-A fine little daughter arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold BURROWS last Friday morning, Sept. 25th. (1 Oct 1914)

-Walter COWELL has purchased the barber shop of Frank GIERKE and took possession last Tuesday. Mr. GIERKE and family will move to Manistique, in the upper peninsula. It is regretted to lose Mr. GIERKE and his family from Grayling. He has been running a clean enterprising shop, since the short time that he has been in business here. Mr. COWELL has been employed at the George McCULLOUGH shop for the past four years. Arnold BURROUGHs, who also has been working at the McCULLUGH shop has hired out to Mr. COWELL. Mr. McCULLOUGH says that he will soon have a first class barber to fill the vacancy at his shop. (15 Oct 1914)

-Cameron GAME has purchased the interests of his partner, Arnold BURROWS, in the meat market and will conduct the same. Mr. BURROWS and wife are taking a short vacation after which they expect to return to Grayling. (28 Mar 1918)

-Today the MILKS meat market changes hands, Arnold BURROWS who has been the efficient meat cutter at this market has taken over Mr. MILKS' interests and hereafter this place of business will be known as the Arnold BURROWS market and will be run in the same clean, business-like manner, as formerly. Mr. BURROWS is well liked in Grayling and his ability as a market man will no doubt assume his complete success. Mr. MILKS has been one of the most reliable business men in this city for the past eleven years. He served as a member of the Village council for several terms and also as a member of the Township Board of Grayling township. He says that he has not yet decided just what he will do in the future but for the present, at least he and his wife will retain their home here. (24 Apr 1919)

-CIRCUIT COURT.
The April term of Circuit court will convene at the Court House in this city next Monday, with Hon. Guy E. SMITH of Gladwin on the bench, making his second term in Grayling.
CHANCERY CASES.
Causes in which no progress has been made for more than one year:
United States Slicing Machine company vs. Cameron GAME and Arnold BURROWS. (8 Apr 1920)

-CAMPTERS HAVE TENTED VIL-
LAGE AT LAKE MAR-
GRETHE.
The extreme warm weather brot a number of campers to Lake Margrethe within the past few weeks. A number of Grayling families have pitched their tents on the beach and are enjoying the breezes of the lake. The tents are in the vicinity of Collen's Inn and every few days new parties arrive and pitch their tents.
Among those who are camping in this little settlement are the Anthony TRUDEAU, the Arnold BURROWS families, and Mr. and Mrs. BURROWS are entertaining the latter's sister Miss Hazel WALKER and her chum, Miss Anna FISCHER of Cheboygan. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence BROWN, and the Herbert GOTHRO family have quarters nearby and will remain all summer. Mrs. BROWN's mother, Mrs. Frank WOODRUFF and son Kenneth of Bay City are visiting them. Mr. and Mrs. Alva ROBERTS and son Junior and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert TRUDO and daughter Shirley are in another party. Messrs. Leo SCHRAM, Gordon CHAMBERLIN, Paul REINHART, Harold SCHMIDT, Harold McNEVEN, Thorwald PETERSON, William POOR, Lionel LaGROW, Eugene MURPHY and Harry COOK are spending the summer at the lake their camps being located near the lake front, but down among the cottages.
Among the resorters at the Canvas Village are Mr. and Mrs. J. W. BAILEY of Lansing, who have been in Grayling for a number of weeks. They have with them a unique camp trailer and seem to be enjoying themselves very much. They motored thru from Georgia, where they had been visiting. Mr. and Mrs. BAILEY were old residents of Grayling, and Mr. BAILEY has enjoyed telling at gatherings around camp-fires which are built in the evening, of the time in days long gone by of how lumbering operations were carried on in the vicinity of Portage Lake, now Lake Margrethe, and where the railroad that transported the lumber was located and the mill that was used in the manufacture of it. This was in 1869. He says since leaving Grayling he has longed to get back just for a visit. Mr. and Mrs. BAILEY are interesting people and their presence at the lake is being much enjoyed.
The folks of this little canvas village spend the evenings telling tales around camp fires rowing, or dancing to the music of a victrola at Collen's Inn. This year more than ever before, the camping parties at Lake Margrethe have increased. (21 Jul 1921)

-Mr. and Mrs. Arnold BURROWS are receiving congratulations on the arrival of a daughter at their home yesterday noon. (7 Dec 1922)

-Frank WALKER, who has been visiting his sister, Mrs. A. S. BURROWS for ten days left Tuesday for Cheboygan. Mr. WALKER just completed a season's sailing on the lakes. (20 Dec 1923)

Is it possible that the Christian SALLING you are interested in is Victor SALLING? I have information extracted from the Crawford County Newspaper the "Avalanche" on a Victor SALLING, who was married to Christina HANSON on 8 Sep 1888 and a few of their descendants.

If any of this seems likely or possible, let me know and I will copy you with what I have.

Crawford & Tappan of MI, NE, NY, VA

My great-grandmother was Esther Tappan Crawford. She was married to Albert and then Norman Crawford. All born in MI.
Her father was Allen Tappan who was born in NY and moved to MI then NE. Her mother is listed as Mary J Tappan in the 1960 NE census, I believe that she must have been Mary Jane Williams as shown in the St Clair MI marriages to Allen Tappan. It appears that Albert and Norman Crawford were the sons of John M Crawford who also was born in NY then moved to Michigan. His wife was Mary or Polly. Her maiden name may have been Miller. Esther and Norman ultimately moved with all the children to VA. Any leads are appreciated.

Obit Submission - Phoebe Owens, wife of the late George Owens

The following information extracted from the Grayling, Crawford Co., MI Newspaper Avalanche. 1833

"Mrs. Phoebe Owens Passed Away

Mrs Phoebe Owens, wife of the late George Owens, and a resident of Crawford County for the past 52 years passed away at her home here Tuesday evening at l8:40 o'clock. The elderly lady suffered a paralitic stroke several days ago, which left her in a very feeble condition and life gradually ebbed away. Mrs. Owens was one of Grayling's pioneers and through her many years of residence here made many friends among the old and the young. And she could tell you tales of the early life of Grayling which were very interesting. Venturing into marriage at an early age she was left a widow at the tender age of 16. Sometime later she was married to John Kelly and to the union one daughter was born, now Mrs. Davis(d) H. Ward. Her third marriage was to Rastus Purchase, a well known game warden of this county, and sometime after Mr. Purchase passed away she was united in marriage to George F. Owens, a well known resident of Lovells and Grayling. Mr. Owens passed away a few years ago and Mrs. Owens had made her home between Grayling and Ferndale since.Besides her daughter Mrs. Ward, who with her family have been making their home with Mrs. Owens here, there are six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services are being held this afternoon at 3:00 o'clock at Michelson memorial church, with the Rev. H. J. Salmon officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood cemetery. Those from out of town who are expected to attend the funeral are Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Stoliker of Ferndale; Ralph Routier, Ray Owens, Detroit; Charles Owens, Maple Forest.

KECHITTAGO Obituary

Hi R. D.,

The additional variation of your surname's spelling and the page number helped.
The obituary you requested follows:

THOMAS KECHITTAGO DEAD.

Thomas KECHITTAGO, a well known Indian character in this vicinity, passed
away early last Monday morning at Mercy hospital, where he had been receiving
treatment for the past couple of weeks for a severe attack of rheumatism. Mr.
KECHITTAGO had been in a feeble condition for several months past, as also has
been his wife. Mr. KECHITTAGO's exact age is not known, but it was
somewhere in the eighties.
Thomas KECHITTAGO, a Chippewa Indian of Saginaw county, in 1863, was
mustered into the United States service, May 23rd of that year, as Seargent of Co.
K. 1st regiment of Michigan Vol. Sharp Shooters, under Col. DELAND of Jackson.
He served in that capacity until the close of the war, July 28, 1865 and was
honorably discharged.
He came with his family to Grayling early in the '90s and was mustered into
Marvin Post No. 240, G. A. R. April 13, 1895, since which time he has been an
honored member, serving most of the time as Guard and Color-bearer of the Post.
Mr. KECHITTAGO has ever been recognized as an honorable and respected
citizen, differing from many of his own people, in that, by his labor, he has been
thoroly independent and sustained a comfortable home for his family tho he had
lived for more than 80 years. He, with his wife, have been consistent members of
the M. E. church for many years, from where his body was born to Elmwood
cemetery, yesterday morning and laid beside their two children, who had gone
before. His wife survives, but her physical condition and age makes it almost sure
that she will join him very soon. The funeral services were conducted by Rev.
MITCHELL and attended by nearly every soldier here, whose health would
permit. The ladies of the G. A. R. attended in a body to pay their last respects.

I hope this helps your research.

I have the following information extracted from the Crawford County Newspaper the "Avalanche," pertaining to Thomas NOLAN, his wife & children:
The following information extracted from the Grayling, Crawford Co., MI Newspaper Avalanche. NOTE: The date at the end of each extract indicates the date of the publication:
-Mr. and Mrs. Thos. NOLAN were called to Saginaw, Monday, by the death of their niece, Miss Helen SCANLON, who died Sunday. She will be remembered by many of our young people, having been an annual visitor here for several years. (11 Apr 1901)

-Our genial deputy sheriff and night watchman Thomas NOLAN, has sold his home in this village, and will move to Lansing, where two of his sons are at work. he has been for sixteen years Record Keeper of the local lodge of Maccabees who will miss his rotund figure at their gatherings, as will all of our citizens from the street. He has resided here over twenty years, and with his family has hosts of friends who will regret his going. (11 Feb 1909)

-Thomas NOLAN and family have gone to their new home, No. 509 Carrolton Ave., Lansing, where they will be glad to meet old friends when in the Capital City. They will be missed from here by hosts of their associates. (4 Mar 1909)

-Mrs. Thos. NOLAN has the pleasure of entertaining her sister, Miss Bridget CARROLL, of Saginaw, who is making her a two week's visit. (10 Jul 1902)

-The friends of Mrs. Thos. NOLAN are shocked and grieved to learn of her death last week. We have no particulars of her last illness. (23 Feb 1911)

-MARRIED-Tuesday evening, Malcom C. BURKE, of Newbury, Mich, and Kate NOLAN, of Grayling, Justice WOODBURN officiating. (8 Oct 1891)

-The people of this place were shocked to hear of the death of Mrs. Katharine NOLAN-BURKE, formerly a resident of this city, who passed away on Thanksgiving morning, at her home in Lansing, where she lived with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas NOLAN, for about four years. The cause of her death has not been obtained. Mrs. BURKE was a member of the Altar society at St. Mary's church, and one time was president of that society. She was a great church worker and was respected and liked by all who know her. Soon after she was married she was left a widow, and with her little son, Frank, who is surviving her, lived with her parents, until they moved to Lansing. Besides her son she leaves her father and four brothers, Henry, John, Edward and Thomas NOLAN, her mother having died one year ago. (5 Dec 1912)

-Mrs. H. NOLAN with her daughter, Bernice left for their new home in Lansing, last Saturday afternoon.
My Grandfather's complete name was at first,
Wilhelm Lester Babbitt born 8-15-1915.Being that great grandmother Berneice was not married my grandfather took
his mother's last name. But I'm told as a young boy in his
teen years he change it to William Farnell Evans.Because
his mother married a man named William Evans,
my mother told me after my grandfather passed away he wished he would have not changed his name. And would have
kept with his birth name because he was so proud to be
Reuben Babbitt's grandson. As a young boy my grandfather spent most of his time with Elmer & Mae Birdsall who lived by
lake Margerethe in Grayling,MI.I do not know what else to say
except I wish I had Info on Jack Manny who would have been,
my biological great-grandfather.William Evans did not adopt my grandfather when he and Berneice got married,I guess my
grandfather changed his name because he just wanted to belong.
Renee
