Was it determined that it was Daniel Way's boat that was found? There was speculation that it might have been another boat. The previous owner of the Chaquita was the son of the one of the railroad owners, and the boat was reputedly not in good condition. Did you notice any of this speculation in what you have read? Dan had been sailing since the 1860s so I am surprised that he would take a boat that was not seaworthy on such a long trip.
I am interested in what happened to his daughter. He and Lizzie adopted a daughter (Dan had 3 daughters from a previous marriage). Bessie Way, age 14, was staying with my great grandparents when this accident occurred. In a later census she was living with my great grandfather's sister.
