I'm looking for any information anyone has on this couple. Samuel and Betsey (or Elizabeth) were both born in New York around 1810 and moved to Michigan in the early 1830s. They're shown in Cass County in the 1850 census, though I'm not sure how long they'd been living there at that point. Their children included Lurinda (sometimes written as Lucinda), Oscar, Jane, Minerva, and Charles H.

Charles married a woman named Harriet Kree; Minerva married Anthony Charles Rouse, and after her death, her sister Lurinda married him as well! (Anthony and Minerva are my third great-grandparents, through their daughter Alice.)

Any and all info would be most welcome!

Mid-1830s, Isaac & Mary Stephenson Zane and Adult Children Move to Cass Co.

Hi! I'd love help trying to find the parents of Mary Stephenson (Stevenson) Zane and/or her husband, Isaac Zane. Mary Stephenson was apparently born in 1772 in PA, and Isaac Zane was born in 1766 in PA. They and most of their adult children end up in Jefferson Township, Cass Co., MI by the mid-1830s.

This Isaac Zane is probably related to the famous Issac Zane born in 1753, but it is not known how. Both Isaacs lived in or around Zanesfield, Logan Co., OH (formerly Champaign Co., OH) in the early 1800s. Isaac Zane Sr. lived from 1853 - 1816 and died in Zanesfield, OH.

The Isaac I'm researching was born in 1766 in PA, married in 1795 in Clark Co., KY, was living in OH (likely Logan Co. area) by the early 1800s, and moved from Logan Co., OH to Cass Co., MI in the early 1830s where he died in 1839 and is buried in the Reames-Norton Cemetery.

Mary Stephenson & Isaac Zane are said to have married in Clark Co., KY on 12/23/1795 with her father being named William Stevenson. This is found on several online family trees, and the benefit application that Mary signs in 1855 (for Isaac's War of 1812 service). However, I have not been able to find a marriage record online or at the Washington DC DAR Library when looking up Clark County, KY marriages for this time period. Any help would be appreciated.

Mary S. & Isaac Zane had the following children in KY and OH. They might have had more children, but these are the children I'm aware of based on the bible records I found for this Zane family at the DAR Library, marriage records online for Logan Co., OH, and land/death/burial records for Cass Co., MI. Diane Nichols also has a great website, and has done amazing research on these families.

Parents Isaac and Mary Zane moved from Logan Co., OH to Cass Co., MI sometime in the early 1830s. Isaac Zane is shown having land as of 1835, between son's lands (Maxwell Zane in 1831, 1833 & 1838, William Zane in 1831, 1835 & 1839, Squire B Zane in 1839, and Noah Zane's purchase in 1835).

ALL of the following children moved from Logan Co., OH to Cass Co., MI (except two who died):

** CELIA ZANE b. 10/2/1796 in KY d. 1824 in Logan Co., OH after marrying Samuel Hatfield there on 12/18/1818 and having 4 kids. Samuel Hatfield remarried in 1826, and moved to Laporte Co., IN (very close to Cass Co., MI). This is different information about Samuel Hatfield that I've found on another website -- this website indicated he'd married Celia Zane in Floyd Co., KY, but when I looked there for a marriage record, I only could find a Samuel Hatfield marrying a Mary Franklin in that county on 4/13/1815 or 4/26/1815, not a Celia Zane, in the early 1800s. Any corrections to any of my information would be helpful.

** LOVINA JANE ZANE b. 1/15/1798 in KY d. 1881 in Cass Co., MI after marrying Aaron Reames on 2/1/1819 in Logan Co., OH. She was sometimes known as "Lena" or on her marriage record her name is spelled "Luna Zane". Aaron Reames purchased land in Cass Co., MI in 1835 -- right next to land that William Zane (Lovina's brother) purchased in 1839.

** LUCINDA ZANE b. 9/4/1799 or 9/8/1799 in KY d. 1884 in Cass Co., MI after marrying Nathaniel Tharp on 4/27/1826 in Logan Co., OH.

** WILLIAM S. ZANE b. 8/12/1801 in OH d. 1851 in Cass Co., MI after marrying Emily "Alicy" Lowe. She died within a month of William.

** JOHN ZANE b. 5/16/1803 in OH d. after 1850? -- there is a John Zane b. OH age 47 in the Cass Co., MI 1850 US Census (which fits this John's DOB), who is married to Ann with children Lanson Zane age 16 b. OH, and Martha Zane age 6 b. MI. I think this might be the same John Zane as Diane Nichols has these two children listed with John Zane through maybe his first? marriage.

** Maxwell Zane b. 6/30/1805 in OH d. 1842 in Cass Co., MI after marrying Jane Norton on 6/18/1827 in Logan Co., OH. Jane Norton Zane remarried Josiah Lumpkins in 1852 in Cass Co., MI and they later moved to Iowa. Jane Norton Zane Lumpkins died in 1898 and is still buried in the Reames-Norton Cemetery in Cass Co., MI where several of these Zane siblings listed here are also buried.

** Nancy Zane b. 2/21/1808 in OH d. sometime before? 1837 after marrying John Reed on 4/19/1832 in Cass Co., MI. It is unknown where she is buried.

** Noah Zane b. 7/25/1812 in OH d. 1837 per Diane Nichol's records. Unknown if he had married by age 25. This is likely the same Noah Zane that bought land in Cass Co., MI in 1835, close to his brother William Zane's land.

** Catharine Zane b. 4/27/1815 in OH d. 1/24/1881 or 1/24/1882 in Cass Co., MI after marrying Jonathan Colyar on 12/22/1833 in Cass Co., MI. I've also seen her name spelled Katherine Jane Zane. It is this Catharine Colyar who with her husband are signed witnesses for her mom's (Mary Stephenson Zane) War 1812 benefits application that was signed in 1855.

** Squire Boone Zane b. 11/3/1816 in OH d. 1900 in Iowa after marrying Aseneth Williams on 5/17/1838 in Cass Co., MI. He moved to IA in the late 1830s. I don't know who he is named after, but "Squire Boone" was the name of the father and brother of the famous Daniel Boone.

Any help as to the parents of Mary Stephenson Zane or Isaac Zane, or any corrections or additions to the above information would be terrific -- thank you!

Sorry I was not thinking. She was married to Luther Cox but I think they might have been divorced because he went to Missouri and I think he was married to someone else.

So I think she might have died with the last name Cox.

Sorry
Mary

I have no info. on Jacob's first wife, so what you have written is good to know. I am connected to Jacob thru Judson Price, (my great grandfather), son of Jacob by his 2nd wife. I would be very interested in getting copies of the letters you have mentioned and a copy of the contract for his preaching in MI if you would be willing to share them. If you would consider sharing copies, my email address is: fowlake@boreal.org. I have a small photo of Jacob in a locket if I can figure out how to copy that. (Possibly you already have a photo of him).

Jacob Price was married to "an English lady" Ann Price. They came to the US in 1831 from Wales. They had one child Ann Bowen Price. (1832) Mother Ann died in MI shortly after they arrived. I have letters that Jacob received when he was in New York from Wales. Also, have a document (180 years old) that talks about his contract for the preaching in MI. My aunt also has letters that Arthur Price (Jacob/Sarah's youngest son) I would love to talk with anyone that might have other data on Jacob and his first wife. I am related to Ann Bowen Price Carmichael.

Looking for any information on Frank Middlestadt(sometimes spelled Middlestate, Mittelstaedt, etc) born about 1865 and died on April 3, 1947(according to his wife's obituary in 1953). He married Catherine Josephine Wellard(1873-1953) and had multiple children, including my great-grandfather Daniel Louis Middlestadt(1903-1972) and his brother Lyle Middlestadt(1913-1984). Michigan and Germany are the main locations where my ancestors in particular are recorded to have lived, but other locations aren't limited to other relatives.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help. Although you didn't give me any new information, I was inspired to try a new approach. There were 5 Ira Campbells on the 1850 census who claimed NY as a birthplace and were the approximate age to have married in Ohio in 1853. One of them was Ira, son of Lemuel and Araminda. On the 1860 census, there were two Ira Campbells in Michigan - Ira in Cass County, and Ira in Oakfield,Kent County. The Ira in Kent County is probably the son of Lemuel and Araminda since they were also listed in Oakfield on the 1860 census. I think that rules him out as the father of Mary Elizabeth unless he managed to be counted in both Cass and Kent counties. Also, the Ira in Oakfield appears to have a wife and 3 year old daughter, which is pretty improbable given the timeline for Ira, father of Mary Elizabeth. He would have had to remarry almost immediately after Lucy Anne's death. I realize that widows and widowers often remarried quickly to provide care and support for young children, but it seems reasonable that Ira would have retained custody of his daughters if he had remarried that fast.

Ira Campbell and daughter Mary Elizabeth

Looking for information on Ira Campbell, father of Mary Elizabeth Campbell who married Daniel Trattles. Ira's wife was Lucy Ann Meade who died in childbirth 20 Feb 1857 in Ohio. There were three daughters who were raised by Meade relatives in Cass County. Mary Elizabeth was raised by George and Elizabeth Meade, Harriet was raised by J.M. and Mary Pemberton, and Lydia was raised by grandparents John and Lovina Ackley Meade.

According to the 1860 Census, Ira was living with the family of A.P. Corey along with Louisa Campbell who was 20 years older than Ira, so she may have been his mother or possibly a much older sister.

Some family trees show his parents as Lemuel and Araminda Campbell and his death in Montcalm, Michigan in 1912. Does anyone know if this is a good match?

Thomasker2, I want to thank you for your response. It has been a big help. Since posting that message I have learned that Martha may have been Martha Hattie Zuelke and that she may have married brothers. First Harold Eugene Farrow in 1914 and after his death in 1919, she married his brother Charles Edward Farrow on 7/22/1919. Her first three children, Pauline, Florine and Margaret were fathered by Harold and the other four children were by Charles. They were Marion Barbara, Richard Leslie, Marjorie Virginia and Jack Farrow. We know very little about the children in the first marriage except for Pauline who we believe married Wilbert West. We know Margaret only live a short while but we would like to know what happened to Florine and the other four children.
We understand that Charles and Harold were born in Michigan
about 1889 and 1892 respectively. Martha was born in Indiana
in 1894 and she is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Dowagiac, Michigan.
Any additional help you could provide would be appreciated.
I had to go back and see what I wrote. My family line is Elsie and while I can't prove it I beleive there is a connection between the Elsie's that went to michigan and the Elsey line. About 2 years ago when I couldn't make the connection I gave all me material to Bob Elsey in New Jersey who was of the at line.I only have my record database now. My Elsie line has used both Elsie and Elsey as surnames so I am always intrested in sharing info with any one. Hopoe to hear from you
Dave

Hello Richard,

Thanks for replying. I've been trying to remember bits and pieces of conversations with my Mother before her death in 1993 about her father's family - or what little she knew. From my notes, I am wondering if Fred Roof was actually the child of Christian Planck from a first marriage. I just can't substantiate this right now. He told my Mother that he was born a Planck so I believe this. According to our cousin, Ezra Planck, there was a divorce or, as he put it, "someone strayed from their marriage vows," which led to Fred (Freddie) being adopted by the Roofs.

I think Ezra knew far more than he told us. We came to know him and his wife Hilda after they showed up on my Grandmother's doorstep in the 1940's "out of the blue" and told her who they were. They even asked to see her marriage license to Fred, which she supplied even though she was insulted at the request. Ezra visited my family in Baton Rouge several times through the years after that but always remained rather evasive about specifics regarding Fred's adoption. He did, however, talk about Laura, Hattie and Clara a lot, as well as the fact that his father (Charles?) was a half brother to Fred or Christian. I'm not sure which.

Maybe this information will help in unraveling Fred's lineage. I've been searching census records for 1900, hoping to find where Fred might have lived prior to moving to Louisiana and marrying my Grandmother, to no avail. I found them in the 1910 census living in Hammond, La., but already knew that info. I also found him in the 1870 census living in the Planck household. He was listed as Freddie and was about 7 years old. That means that 1865 might be wrong for his birth date, could have been 1862.

I had an old family Bible in which Fred entered the birth dates for himself, my Grandmother and their daughters but I believe it was discarded by a work crew which cleaned out my home in 2008 after being flooded by Hurricane Ike. Hopefully, I'll find it in boxes of books, etc. that I still have to go through.

One other thing, Ezra gave us a picture of a very elderly lady, whom he said was his grandmother. He said her name was Susan Wolfe. Does this ring a bell?

Since we don't know each other and you might prefer to contact me through Ancestry.com, I am fine with that arrangement. However, if you would like to talk to me, please feel free to call me at 713-294-9886 or write to me at 2409 Perthuis Drive, La Marque, TX 77568.

Sincerely,

Shirley Nowlin

I've searched all of the indexes online including the gendis system and the text indexes found online.

http://www.mdch.state.mi.us/gendisx/scripts/search.asp

Is it worth trying to order one via mail from MI or Cass County if it is not found on this search?

Also, I was wondering if there are any other resources to check. I am looking for the death record of Martha Warren, who died in Aug 1882. She was born in 1805 in New York.

She is buried in Lily Lake cemetery, and lived in Newburg for much of her life.

I would write to Cass county here, and ask when the county started recording deaths, before you order a lookup.

http://www.casscountymi.org/DepartmentsandCourts/ClerkRegist...

You also might write to the Newberg township clerk, and see if they have the cemetery records, or if they know who does
http://newbergtwp.com/?page_id=136

Hi. I am Elution, Elusion or Elucion Joy's great great grandson. My great-grandfather was also Franklin Lucien Joy.

I have found out a lot about Elution in the past few days. He married Harriet Parker in 1839. They had one child, Franklin. He apparently strUck of the California gold fields, for he is listed in the Sep, 1850 California census at miner living on the Consommes River with 6 other men. He died on December 19, 1850at sea apparently returning to Michigan from California.

He is buried in Michgan.

Hope this helps.

Mike
