"Woodie J. Dean Killed in Action

Woodie J. Dean, 21-year old
Battle Creek soldier killed in action Friday in South Vietnam, had served five months to the day under enemy fire, his family said today.
His first letter home after his June 1 arrival at camp near
Tay Ninh said the camp was under Viet
Cong mortar fire the night he reported for duty.
Funeral and burial of Dean are unsettled pending information on the body's return. It is expected that there will be services here, and also in
Tennessee where he will be buried.
Dean was born April 24, 1947 in Samburg, Tenn., son of Woodrow W. and the late
Georgia M. (Goodman) Dean. He came to
Michigan with the family while still an infant, and grew up in
Battle Creek. He was attending
Battle Creek Central High School when he enlisted Jan. 17, 1965, and completed his high school work in the
Army and received his diploma.
Dean trained at Ft. Knox,
Ky., Ft. Gordon,
Ga., and Ft. Dix, N.J.. He was a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Bn., 22nd Inf. Div., and at the time of his death was a flame-thrower operator. He was struck by hostile small-arms fire while on a military mission, according to the Defense department telegram and was believed to have died instantly.
He was married to Alice
Terrell here in
Battle Creek on Dec. 4, 1966.
In addition to this wife, Dean is survived by his father and his stepmother, Mrs Estell Dean, all of 169 Bradley St.; a brother Jimmy Dean of 36 Ave. B; a stepbrother, William T. Warner of 103 Fountain St.; a stepsister, Mrs Vera
Faye Horner of 21
Maxwell St.; his grandmother, Mrs. Florence
Rudd of
Hornbeak, Tenn., and stepgrandmother, Mrs. Bell
Carrington of Gleason, Tenn., as well as uncles, aunts, nephews and neices."

Woodie is buried in Antioch
Baptist Church Cemetery, near
Hornbeak,
Obion County,
Tennessee.
