Deposition
Case of Celia Morley, Wid., No. 237.645
On this 18th day of December, 1893, at 3 1/2 East of Galien, County of Berrien,State of Michigan, before me, W.H. Harrisberger, a Special Examiner of the Pension Office, personally appeared the claimant Mrs. Celia Morley, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to her during this Special Examinantion of afore-said pension claim, deposes and says:
My age is about 72. I was about 26 years old when I was married. My present P.O. is Buchanan, this county and residence as above. My daughter lives with me.
I am the legal widow of Thomas O. Morley, who I suppose is dead. He went to the Army and that is the last I know of him. He enlisted in Co. C, 12 Mich. Infn. Can't tell the date when or where he was discharged. The above is all the service he was rendered the Government to my knowledge.
Mr. Morley and I were married at Jefferson Hunter(dead), my brother-in-law, in this county, but I can't now remember the date. I was 26 and he was 28. Neither of us has been previously married.
I knew my Husband some 4 years prior to our marriage. We lived together from that time as man and wife up to the time of his enlistment in the army or his death.
No Sir, I have not remarried since my husband went away. No I have never obtained a Divorce from him.
I cannot give the dates of the births of my children and I have no family record showing the same and I know of no record of the date of my marriage nor of the births of the children. In 1862, I had 7 children living and all lived to be 16 yrs of age.
No. We did not belong to any church those days and there are no church records.
It has been a long while ago that my husband left home and went to the army, and it seems to me that he and William Newgin, (address unknown) wrote a letter home together. I think Newgin, went to the army at the same time and in the same Company with my husband. I haven't got the letter now. He seemed to have got on the boat to come home after being discharged on Certificate of Disability, and from that time I have never heard anything of him. I think he must have been thrown off the boat. I believe him to be dead. I have never heard anything from or of him, since that time.
I have now been sick, not able to help myself for about two years past and I cannot remember facts and dates. I think Mrs. Sabin Morley, my sister-in-law, would remember the facts about me and my family the best. She knew me since I was a girl.
No Sir, I never had a child born before Mr. Morley and I were married.
Yes, It was Rev. A.C. Shaw that married us. I dont know what became of him.
Yes two of the 7 children are dead. Celia and Mary. They were both married when they died, and past 16 years old-
Yes, a Mrs Key at Galien, that told me that some money had been stolen and had been found in my husband's boot. She went with me to see Warren Martin when he came home, and he said that my "husband was awaiting his discharge and working for wages." As near as I can gather, My husband and Martin got on the boat at Pittsburgh Landing [Tennessee] to come home. That Martin stole some money and stuck it in my husbands boot when it was found. No, I never knew of him being in Prison. I think Martin murdered him for his money.
No, I cannot remember when my youngest child was born.
Q. Have you understood the questions I have asked you?
Ans. It has been so long ago I cant remember now. The children can tell you more than I can. I cant remember nothing. I do not want to be present or be represented by an attorney.
