You will need to supply at a minimum the approx. year of death.

Doris Henry (wife of Marion Lester Henry) was my step-mother. She married my father in 1939 after my own mothers death in 1937. She was adopted at a young age by Carl and Flora Hoadley of Benzie county, Michigan. She had told me that she had a brother, Sherman Baker and another named George Baker. I had met George Baker many years ago (ca. 1960). I am attaching photos of Doris and my father (1967) and her graduation portrait. She passed away in 1974. She has a son David and daughter Patricia (last names and info available).
If you would like to correspond with me, please send e-mail to "Fred" at whitey1bite@comcast.net and I will respond within a few hours.

Re: Nichols Family History

Hi Debbie,

Wow, I sure hope you have some links to my Nichols family. Just tell me what kind of info you would like and I will see if I have it.

I am not sure what information you have read that I have previously posted, but this is a little of what I can tell you about my family:

James M. Nichols lived in various parts of Michigan in the mid to late 1800's. One of his son's, George Albert Nichols, was born in 1862 in Saranac, MI. I believe he married Carrie Bovee. He had at least two son's with his first wife (Carrie Bovee). Their names were Eli and Jim. He married again to Dora Straw, they had several children including my grandfather, Frank Nichols. I know that is real brief, but it might be enough to see if we are linked at all.

Other Names you can look for in are:
(I will put them in family order starting with James M. Nichols)
James M. Nichols
----George A. Nichols
--------Eli Nichols
--------James (Jim) Nichols
--------Arthur Nichols
--------Mary Nichols
--------Bertha Nichols
--------Georgia Nichols
--------Frank Nichols
----Truman W. Nichols (Walter)
--------Alfred Nichols
--------Charles Nichols
--------Fred Nichols (maybe the same as Alfred)
--------Mandie Nichols
--------Mable Nichols
----Ida P. Nichols

That is about it for other names in the family. Let me know if there is anything else I might add.

Thanks,
Rick

Hi - I took an extra few minutes at the courthouse in Beulah yesterday and looked for death dates for the Waters you are looking for. I have found a few, and since all the old deaths in Benzie County are listed on the two page index these are probably all you'll find. Obits are a bit tougher, since the earliest Benzonia papers in the local library don't start until 1888, and then they were sporatic.
The village of Benzonia was started as a college, so the local newspaper seems to be filled with town and school news, but little about the farmers except a few gossip columns. In fact I found no formal obits listed even in 1918, if someone in town died they just put it on the front page. The paper did not print for the two months in 1918 when I looked for Frederick's notice, change of ownership.

So here's from the death certificates at the Benzie Co. Courthouse:

Waters, Achsah Otis, female, white, married, age 82y, 11m, 24d, died Nov. 15 1885 in Benzonia Twp., died of old age, b. Saratoga Co., NY, occupation housewife. Father: Abijah Otis, b. Howard Steuben Co., NY Mother: Eleanor Otis, date of record May 22, 1886

Waters, Sarah Ann, female, white, married, age 68y, 4m, 3d.
Died in Union City, MI (I don't know where this is, it is not around here) died: April 14, 1886, accidentally and instantly killed by being thrown from a carriage by runaway horses. b. Erie Co., NY occupation: teacher and housewife. Father: Matthew Pollay b. Cayuga NY, Mother Olive Pollay b. Orleans Co., NY, date of record Apr. 20, 1887

Waters, Jane, female, white married, age 77 y,, 4 m. 11 d
d. in Frankfort of gastric nueroses b. Ireland, housewife. Father: Gallogay, Mother unknown, date of record Jan 10, 1911

Waters, George H., d. June 14, 1913, male, white, widowed age 90y, 4 m, 14 d in Frankfort of hypostatic congestion of the lungs. b. Vermont occupation cabinet maker, father unknown, mother unknown, date of record Aug. 10. 1913

Waters, ------ infant, 1 day old, died Sept 23, 1896 in Bendon (about 15 miles from Benzonia), father Edwin Waters, mother Ettie Waters

Waters, Geo. Asa, male, white, single, 15y, 7m, 13d. Died in Benzonia Twp., Benzie Co. of diabetis insepidis. b. Mich, occupation farm boy. Father Frederick Waters, Mother Carrie Heath, date of record Oct. 6, 1915

Waters, Frederick B. male, white, married 55 y, 4m, 1d
died in Benzonia
father Otis B. Waters b. NY
mother MA.H Bliss b. Mass
date of record Feb. 5, 1918

While looking for death notes in the paper I found this:

Miss Nora Waters who has been teaching at Evart (Mich) has secured a vacation and is visiting her mother.
(Benzie Banner, Feb. 7, 1918)

Good hunting!

Peterville was a small lumber camp located in Section 10, Platte township. It was located in a large valley along the present Fowler Road. A few years ago there was a concrete water tank their. The railroad passed by this tank and may have used it for water as well as the horses that skidded the logs. I have been researching ghost towns in Benzie county, from among other things old newspapers. Found only one referance to Peterville in the Benzie Banner. The article mentioned Samuel Olson, a man that was killed by a falling limb. The article was dated 11 May 1899.
Harold

marriage record lookup Please, 1898

I am trying to locate the maiden name of my ancestor's wife in hopes that it will help me to find what happened to them after 1910. In the census of 1900, it says that they were married for two years which would make it 1898. They have one daughter who was born in 1899. I can't be sure that they were married in Benzie county but its the only place I have. If anyone is headed to the courthouse and would be so kind to take a look and see if they were married there and if so, could get her maiden name for me .... I would be forever thankful. Or perhaps the birth of their daughter might have her mother's maiden name on the birth record. Their info below:

Fred H. Graham b. 1873 St. Joseph county, Michigan
Carrie b. 1869 Michigan (she was about 4 yrs. older than him)
Margaret W. b. 1899 - daughter

Thank you so very much!

Hello: Rachel Jane, wife of Alexander Blacklock 1826-1897, was born in Ontario 1831, d. 17 Sep 1887. I can't find anything official about her parentage. Is there a kind soul in Benzie Co. who might have access to the old Benzie newspapers who might be willing to look for an obituary for Rachel or one for Alexander who died 21 Sep 1897, So. Frankfort? MANY many thanks in advance. Barbara

I have Asa's obituary as he is my gr-grandfather. Frederick is his grandson, being the son of Otis who was a minister and was at several different times the minister of the Congrgational church in Benzonia.
Depending on where you may live, you may get copies on microfilm. Have information on Amasa also.
Let me know about your location. There are other ways to get them also.
More on that later. HWalter
Well, here Iam again. Just discoverd this message too regarding the Waters. Frederick is the grandson of Asa, being the son of Otis, Asa's oldest son.
I knew there was a Harvey, have little on him, but not much
as the few that I know about are the family that came to Michigan. Will wait for your response.
H Walter

Thank you so much for the great information about Guy Bruce. He was my aunt Mildred's first husband and I am helping his granddaughter learn more about her family. She will really appreciate what you have provided.

Richard Welch

Roy Westboy - Thompsonville and Springdale 1880's - 1930

Researching Roy William Westboy. Trying to find his parents and siblings (if he had any). Death cert says father was John Westboy and mother was Mary Gonzales. Not sure this is correct.

I've scanned the 1920 census forms for Benzie and Manistee Co.. Also have tried various spellings of Westboy, but no luck. Hoping someone might have some suggestions. Thanks for any help!!

This is what I do know:

Born about 1880 or 1887 (Not sure where, possibly Norway). According to WWI registration card dated 6/5/1917 he lived in Thompsonville, MI and worked on a farm in Springdale, MI. His wife Wilhelmina (Minnie)nee Johnson and child Judith lived in Chicago and did not live with him as far as I know. His daughter's birth certificate dated 3/16/1918 also states he lived in Thompsonville, MI. I believe he and Minnie may have divorced sometime between 1920 and 1930s. He must have eventually moved to Chicago area too. I can find him on the 1930 census in Cook County, Il, and he did die 7/21/1953 in Chicago.

Thanks again for any help and any suggestions!!!

Re: William and Mildred Davis

My mother is Zella Davis, Grd Fth Zell Davis, Grt Grd Fth George Grant Davis and Grt Grt grandfather Joseph Davis from Benzie County Joyfield Michigan and from your info his parents were William & Mildred Davis. By chance saw the Medal of Honor story in Detroit News last year and knew it had to be same family, which all connected when I saw your message in Roots. Been trying to trace my family for years and came to a deadend. Would you be willing to share info? Where was William born in Pennsylvania and his wife Mildred in Virginia? I would be most grateful and willing to share any of my information. Hopeing to hear from you. Thank-you
