Larson, August E, - 1870-1937

Searching for info on my great-grandparents. August immigrated from Sweden through PA in 1889, marrying Hilda Oleson (1867-1897) in 1893 in Bellaire (Antrim Co). They had at least 3 children - Walden (1894), August (1895), and Hilda Marie (1897). Hilda died in 1897, 2 weeks after Hilda Marie was born.

He remarried in 1899 Augusta C. Johnson Larson (1874-1924), who had been previously married to Adolph Larson (1868-1896).

I cannot find death or burial records for August Sr or Augusta. Both died in Antrim Co. I'd also like to find ancestors for both Adolph and August Sr.

Two of Martha Makel and Conrad Scholl's sons married Larsons, if I recall. I think you might want to get in touch with Debbie Derrer who started this thread.

Late to the thread, but - My grandmother Inez was your grandmother Gladys' older sister. I'd love to add the Scholl tree to mine. I remember many happy times at your grandparents' house when we'd head up north to visit. (Bernadine is my mom).

I've also gotten quite a bit done on the Larson tree that I'd love to share with you.

Sharp Family Hotel

I am looking for more information on the Sharp Family in Elk Rapids, Michigan.

Alexander Y. Sharp was the son of Thomas Evans Sharp (1839-1913) and Mary Morral (1858-1893) (possibly Morrel) born in 1873. He also had a brother, Charles (1877-1893). Thomas Evans Sharp and his wife owned a hotel in Elk Rapids. On the 1900 census, it's in district 6. It has no street listed, but the house number is 388 (390 was originally written and crossed out).

Alexander Sharp married Anna Lavanture (abt 1879) in November of 1900. They had a daughter, Audrey Marie in 1906.

In September 1914, Alexander and Audrey died by "drowning accidetally" in Elk Rapids. I can only find their death certificates and no obituaries or newspaper articles.

Does anyone know of hotels in this area around 1900? On Alexander's death certificate, his occupation is listed as "hotel keeper". I am assuming it's the same hotel his father owned. I googled, but it hasn't been much help. I emailed White Birch Lodge, which said on it's website it was operated as a hotel in the early 1900's. This hotel is also on a lake, which would make the drowning make even more sense.

Anyone?

I'm frustrated, too. All the Googling on the earth didn't work. Fortunately my paper came yesterday.

Go to: www.antrimreview.net
You'll get phone nos. AND extension numbers.

It may be that the issue you want is only at the library. I can't remember when this company replaced the predecessor dummies.
That company's write meant "facade" but she wrote "fasod". Shortly after that, the parent co. closed down all of its local papers.

elden

I just did an online search for the Antrim County News and found another phone number which I called:
Antrim County News
112 E State St, Mancelona, MI 49659
http://www.antrimcountynews.com
(231) 587-8471
The Antrim County News has been out of business since Feb. 2009 and all of the bound newspaper books have been taken to the Bellaire Museum. Just thought I would let you know the latest. Carol

I called the phone number you gave me for the Antrim Review, and the young lady said they no longer have that newspaper because it was bought out. She suggested I go to:
www.michigannewspapers.com, but I didn't have much luck on that site in finding the Antrim Review. Hopefully, the lady at the Antrim County Historical Society will be able to locate the obituary for me. Thanks for your response.

I wish I had heard from you earlier. I called the Bellaire Library and they referred me to the Antrim County Historical Society. The library didn't have room to keep all the newspaper books, so they gave them to the H.Society. Since the H.S. is only open during the summer, there was a phone number on their answering machine to call for the president, which I did. Betty is going to look up the obituary for me, so hopefully I will hear from her this week some time. Thank you for your reply. Carol

Hi Ellen If I am honest I have not done a lot with my family history lately as I thought I had gone as far as I could! I just google names every so often and keep finding more living relatives!! You have got me a bit confused again -the will I have is Jane Strains leaving everything to David and Alice Mcmeekin and Thomas, and I would happily let you have a copy but am unsure how this site works. I don't know anything about Elizabeth McMeekin or Jane Wilson(I'm thinking that the McMeekin is on both sides and that is what the confusion is) . I have a copy of a newspaper article about the twins death and also the auction of William's farm at Tullygarley -they both died in the house they were born in.Can you check your facebook (if you have it) messages and look in "others".

Hi

Yes indeed it looks like we are cousins many times removed. My relatives started in Antrim with David Strain b 1790, Buried in Connor Cemetery. Married to Mary McClurkan. They had 9 children. Oldest son John Strain b 1818 is my great great grandfather. His brother David (3rd child) b 1822 married Elizabeth McMeeken. He died in Adairs court. They married in 1849 at Ballymena First Presb. church, Antrim. they had 10 children. The oldest son, David b 21 jul 1849 married Jane Jamison. They had no children and that is probably why she lived with the McMeekan's. I have no death date for that David. Do you have the family tree maker program? That is very worth the money. So easy to keep track of the family. So you think Elizabeth's mother was Jane Wilson? Is it possible to get a copy of her will or can you forward the information on? Thanks, Ellen Strain French

Dougandellen I did write a reply to u but it seems to have disappeared atm so apologies if this is a repeat! My Jane Strain (10/1/1834-28/12/1916) was indeed a sister to Mary Jamison (28/11/1830-7/8/1891) and she had no children that I am aware of. After checking my records Jane might not have been married to William or James Strain(I put 2 and 2 together and made 5!) W and J were twin brothers who died within a day of each other aged 66 of 'dropsy'. It has been a while since I worked on this so I think my dob's came from a family Bible although my uncle had also done a lot of work before me. I have a lot of papers etc which I got from my grandfather Thomas McMeekin.

With the Tullygarley in common they were perhaps cousins?

Looking again at my records I don't actually know if Jane married William or James Strain and might well have been married to David Strain(no children). I just had the information about William and James and put 2 and 2 together and made 5!!!W & J were twins who died in 1891 within a day of each other of 'dropsy' aged 66.
Thanks for your replies. I posted the original post here years ago when I first started.

I now realise it is on totally the wrong thread! But too late now I guess :) and looks like you both found it regardless.

I have since inherited my mother-in-law's research. She has the following:

Father Thomas, weaver, of Tullaghgarley. Possibly married to Mary WILSON: their children David 7/10/1825, Elizabeth 9/1/1827, Nancy Davis 2/7/1829, ?Alexander c1833, David 7/8/1835.

Baptism dates [as above] found for all children EXCEPT 'our' Alexander.

This does not quite fit with the dates you have for 'your' Elizabeth. Also a generation removed for Thomas. I will have another hunt through the box of papers and see if there is anything there about Strain or Jamieson.

The Jane that married our David Strain was Jane Jamison, born 1841, Married in 1874 and as far as I know they had no children. Do you have any dates for your Jane? Could she have been Mary Jamison's sister (B 1834)? This almost make my head hurt..

I am going to call the Mancelona Township Library and Bellaire Public Library tomorrow. The information on FINDAGRAVE about Margaret (McAnsh) Hysell does not list survivors, etc., and there is very little about her husband. Actual obituaries would be better, I think.
I have in my database several gravestone cites for this family in the Mancelona cemetery.

I don't think an obit was ever published or I'd have it but, assuming I missed it, here's what you do.

There are two sources for the Mancelona Herald of that era.

1) there is a microfilm version in the Mancelona twp. library if Mancelona is some place you can get to.

2) hard copies are carefully protected and, I'm quite certain, in the possession of Roger Anger, the twp. sexton.

He's a really great guy and probably would look up the obit for you.

I don't know his phone no. but I'm certain if you were to
Google "Mancelona Township" + "Antrim County, Michigan" you'd find a webpage with phone numbers for all of the township officials.

If you have trouble, write me at "eldenj@antrimfamilies.com" and I'll try some other tricks to get Roger's phone no.

best regards,

elden

I am trying to find which newspaper would have carried obits for Mancelona, Antrim Co., Michigan, in 1912. I have checked the online index for the Traverse City paper with no luck. I am trying to find the obit for:

Teazean A. Sutherland
b. August 1835 in Canada
died: NOVEMBER 7, 1912 in Mancelona, Michigan.

Any help and direction so very much appreciated. Its been a 15 year journey in tracking this grandmother down. Really hoping to find her obituary.
Does anyone have any information on Mary Stott King wife of Joseph A King who is buried in Jones Cemetary. Would like to know if she is buried next to her husband there. Can't find any records that tell where she died and is buried. I do know that after her husband died she lived with her daughter Ida and Thomas Bartholomew in Echo township, Antrim county, Michigan. Thanks, Lynn Bartholomew Mary was 79 in 1920 when she lived with daughter Ida, Can't find anything after that. The records for Jones cemetary have not been kept up to date.

He was actually born July 7, 1867.

I found this article at Newspaper Archive - it was hard to read the print.

Benton Harbor Daily Palladium July 26, 1901 Page 2
ONE MAN BURNED TO A CRISP

Macedonia, Mich. - (illegible here) The top of the Antrim blast furnace blew out. Alexander Vincent, one of the top fillers was burned to a crisp, and his companion, John ?surname was terribly injured. Vincent lived for several minutes after the explosion and kept saying "oh my God! save me". He leaves a widow and four children.

After looking at the Michigan death certs. I think his companion was John Strehl. He died of burns on July 27 in Macedonia, and received the burns on July 23.
