I am also looking for McKinnons from Alpena. My g-g-grandfather is thought to be John H. McKinnon b. abt. 1876. If you happen upon anything about the McKinnon clan in this area I would be very appreciative if you would pass it along. I will do this same.

I have found another source that I had here: Death Entries in Early Alpena, MI Newspapers, 1871 - 1900. This will lead to a newspaper that is available at the library. The entry was James Henderson, Fall, 1894, drowned / body found May 1885. This entry was in The Labor Journal. Just as additional information, there also was another entry of Mrs. (Capt) Henderson's death in January 1892. That entry was in the Alpena Argus. I'd ask the library to investigate not only the Fall, 1894 entry for James' death, but also the May, 1895 issue to see if anything was said there.

Because there is no 1890 census available, you might ask if they have any city directories available that he might appear in before he died. Try that. He did not appear in the 1880 census for the area.

I also had a thought, and checked the Viall index, a listing of events and persons mentioned in the Alpena News between 1840 and 1914. His name did not appear in the index. I'll keep thinking, and if I know of any other listings I can check in the meantime, I'll let you know what I check and the results.

I just had another thought, I believe the library also has films of all the death certificates from that time period, and hopefully, he may have been recorded. Many were not at that time, but I'd certainly ask for them to take a look for you.

I have checked my book on burials in Evergreen Cemetery (the city cemetery) in Alpena, and he is not listed there. The other local cemeteries' listings are on the Alpena County Library site: http://www.alpenalibrary.org/special/genealogy/genealogy.htm...

He is also not listed in the other largest cemetery in Alpena, Holy Cross, the Catholic cemetery. He may have been buried at the city cemetery in the area reserved for those who could not pay for their burials. And most of the names of those people are not known.

However, the library houses films of all the old local newspapers, and his death may well have been noted in one of them. Your having the date of his death is very helpful. Go to the library website, click on 'Genealogy Collection', and then, on the left side of the new page, find ' Genealogy Questions Answered'. They are extremely helpful there, and will be happy to look on their films to see if there may be a mention of his death, and perhaps if you're lucky, more information than that. The library is closed Monday for the holiday, but they will be open on Tuesday.

There are two options: you could contact the Alpena County Library at their website, and click on 'Genealogical Questions Answered'. Here's their link:
http://www.alpenalibrary.org/special/genealogy/genvital.html

If they have no evidence of that marriage (but it looks as though they would, from what they show on their site), then contact the County Clerk's office:
their website:
http://www.alpenacounty.org/co_clerk.htm

You can contact them various ways shown on their website.
Berkswich History Society are writing a book about Weeping Cross House, the home of the Salt family in Stafford and I have a large amount of info on the family.

Reginald Salt was the 4th son of Thomas Salt, a Banker and MP, and Emma Helen Mary Anderdon born 2 Mach 1874. Thomas was born in Stafford on 12 May 1830 and baptised at our local church. He had a twin sister Harriet, and a younger sister Sarah born 1831. His mother Harriet Petit died in childbirth in 1833. Thomas his wife lived in Stafford all their lives, commuting to London to attend Parliament.

Below is an account of Reginald marriage to Maud Wigram. They had 3 daughter, Laura, Barbara and Olive I have no knowledge of him marrying for a second time. He was Manager of Lloyds Bank in Leamington, Warwickshire for some time - I guess this was after his spell in the USA. He died 13 June 1962.

Less than a month after his sister’s funeral on 19th June 1901 Mr Reginald John Salt of Thermalito California, fourth son of Sir Thomas Salt of Weeping Cross, Stafford was married on Wednesday afternoon, at half past two o’clock to Miss Maud Fanny Wigram, youngest daughter of Mr Robert Wigram of Longcroft, Banstead, Surrey. The Bishop of St Andrews performed the ceremony, assisted by the Rev. E. Buckle and the Rev F.J. Salt, cousin of the groom.

The bride wore a wedding gown of ivory white duchess satin, trimmed with lace and chiffon, and made with a long satin train. She also wore a lace veil, which had been worn by her mother at her own wedding, fastened with a pearl broach, her mother’s gift. Around her neck was a pearl and diamond pendant, the gift of Sir Thomas Salt, together with a gold Staffordshire knot broach. She carried a shower bouquet of choice exotics. The bridesmaids were Miss Hilda Wigram, Miss Dorothy Richardson, Miss C. Turner, Miss Lorna Bosworwth-Smith and Miss Edith Shelley. Miss Marjory Pollock (niece of the groom) acted as trainbearer. The best man was Capt, T.A. Salt, 11 Hussars, brother of the groom. After the ceremony a reception was held at Longcroft and in the course of the afternoon the bride and groom started on their honeymoon, which will be spent at Oxford and afterwards in Wales and Somerset. The bride’s travelling dress was of pale blue and white French camelhair, strapped with blue glace silk, the bodice arranged with accordion pleated chiffon and a collar of Honiton lave. Her hat was of white crinoline trimmed with tulle and roses and she carried a white chiffon sunshade to match.

Seeking information on descendants of the siblings of Agnes Povish Jankiewicz/Korige Ksiazkiewicz/Halleck.

Mrs. Agnes Halleck (maiden name Povish?/Pazin?/Pazey?) died in Tawas City on 17 Nov 1918. Her obit lists four surviving siblings:

1. Mrs. John Klenow
2. Peter Povish of Tawas
3. Frank Povish of Alpena
4. Mrs. Matt Greene of Detroit

Agnes' parents are Thomas and Margaret Povish, living in Tawas in 1900. On that census, Margaret says she had 8 children, 5 living in 1900.

Agnes married John JANKIEWICZ in 1888. John died in a tragic rail accident in 1901, and Agnes married Joseph Adam Halleck in 1902.

Agnes & John had seven known children:
1. Kathryn
2. Mary
3. Stella
4. Pauline
5. Frank
6. Peter
7. Veronica

Agnes & Adam had four known children:
1. Freda
2. Edward
3. Theodore
4. Stanley

John's children used the surname KORIGE.

Adam's Polish surname was something like KSIAZKIEWICZ, but his children used the surname HALLECK.

Many misspellings of both Polish & English surnames found for Agnes, John & Adam.

If anyone can help me locate descendants of Agnes' siblings, please contact me. Who are your parents.
The names of my grandpa's kids are David, Anita, Fred, Alvin, Betty, Shirley, and Wayne. I am one of Wayne's kids.

If we have the same grandpa, I was told he left Montana when he was 16 because of a flood and his dad being out of work. I was told his parents moved and thats why he moved. I dont know of any truth to that or not.

I don't believe they are cricket bats. Those are flat on 2 sides, like a swatter. I looked at their pictures, and found none that had round sides like this. Still seems as though the best guess is the Indian clubs used for exercise.

I have an old tintype of a group of men, and the man seated on the left is holding two items in his hands, both identical. They look like bowling pins, but are much smaller on the base. They also kind of look like very short baseball bats, but the handles have a ridge on them. What on earth are those 2 pins?! And what era would this be from? Are they part of a game?

If you go to http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
then under SEARCH RECORDS, select RECORD SEARCH PILOT, you can type in the name Gonsler under the last name, then type in Alpena under the Place (then wait for a list to pop down for you to select the correct location for Alpena), then search, you'll see everything that is on line. And Rose Gonsler's birth is recorded for 1902 there. So are Simon's and Julius's births. Nothing for Paul. If you call Alpena County's Clerk's office and ask if there is a birth record for Paul during that general period, they may be able to verify if a birth was recorded for him. Their site: http://www.alpenacounty.org/co_clerk.htm
There, they list their phone number and their email address. Good luck! Keep in mind, many fires raged through Alpena county during those early years. The Au Sable-Oscoda fire that wiped out both towns was in 1911, and could have spread that far up. I know that Harrisville was spared, but I don't know where the birth records were kept in Ossineke township then. Try: Ken Lobert, supervisor, 10615 W. Nicholson HIll Rd., Hubbard Lake, MI 49747; 989-727-2771. He may be able to tell you something about how the births were recorded in the early 1900's OR direct you to someone in that twp that is into their history, etc. Some times, it's hard to get a response from small organizations like that, so be patient. Their own records would not include that kind of information, but you could ask how the births were recorded at the county level. It might have been up to a doctor to report it, and in the absence of a doctor, up to the family to report it later. Many times, there was no doctor attending. And without a need for a birth record later, they may not have bothered to report that one. However, I'd question the 1902 date, since Rose's birth took place in that year.

I have John Marvin Goodrich b. Jul 1876 in Wingham, Ontario, Canada, D. Feb 1914
m. Anna May Bates Oct 12, 1909, Wilson Twp, Alpena, MI (license was applied for Oct 11, 1909. John age 20, Anna age 19, residing in Hobson, MI.)
Anna was b. Oct 24, 1890, Alpena, MI d. Aug 18, 1973 in Prince George, B.C. Canada.

I have two children for them: Lewis Albert b. May 17, 1910 & Alfred William b. Mar 16, 1913.

After John passed away Anna married my great-granduncle Francis Wade.

This was relatively new information to me when I faded away from research in the last 1.5 yrs. I am slowly trying to get back into it and have many pages to sort through. For now, this is all I have.
I am not closely related to the Goodrich family in Alpena, MI, however, a member of my family did marry into the Goodrich family back in what appears to be 1909. A fellow family researcher found that John Marvin Goodrich, b. Jul 1876 in Wingham, Ontario, married Anna May Bates on Oct 12, 1909. They had two children: Lewis Albert & Alfred William.
I am a decendant of the Alpena Kollien's. In fact I still live in Alpena near the old family farm. Here are some names to see if any are related to your Rudolf Kollien.
My name is Chris Eller
My my great grandmothers maiden name was Johanna Kollien.
Her parents names were August Kollien and Marie Nensewitz
August's parents were Hermann Kollien and Wilhelmina Hasse.
August moved to Alpena area around the same time his two brothers did also. When they arrived in the Alpena area they all took different last names for some reason.
Kollien, Kollen, and Kollin. They are all buried in the Alpena area. Why the name change no one knows. They boarded a ship called the Saale in Brehem and came through New York and settled in Alpena.

I have considerable information that may be of interest to you. If you are still working on the family lines I would really like to hear from you.

I can be reached at dragon8819@yahoo.com

I can go back one generation to Edward's parents (John and Rose Daleski) and additional generations on Rose and her considerable family connections.
I am in need of some help on the more recent generations of this family link to my family research.

Edward had one sister two brothers. Both the brothers died young; one died at about age of 6 and the other was killed in Feb 1945 in battle of Iwo Jima at about age of 25.
