Search for members of the family Kollien

Classification: Query
Surnames: Kollien, Kollin
My name is Christine Kollien, and I was born 7th May 1978.
Over several internet searches, I found members of a family Kollien, living in Alpena, Michigan, whom I would like to know more about!
I was born in Switzerland.
My father, Gerhard Werner Kollien, was born in Recklinghausen, Germany, 16th December 1934.
His father Rudolf Kollien was born in Preussen.
As I am very interested in how the Michigan Kollien's and me and my family are linked, please email me if you got any information, and I would love to discuss with you!

Christine

My aunt taught Kollien children at the one room Kollien School in Wellington Township in far western Alpena County during the 1920s. The 1920 Census for that area shows a William Kollien, age 28, born in Michigan of German parents. His wife, Florence, 29, was born in Michigan of Scottish parents. His mother, age 51, born in Germany, was living with them. Her name is difficult to read but appears to be spelled Carlisline. Looking quickly, I did not find their name in the 1900 census for the same area.

My mother's family had the farm whose driveway ended right across the road from the Killeen (sp) school. I attended this school for one year also. I remembered a Bill Killeen and asked my mother (nee Leta E. Quantz) for any information on this subject. It is quite (more than a little bit) possible that the spelling was changed.
Here is the reply that I received from my mother.

"I don't think it was the same Killeen . The names of the
kids were :Marie , Herman , Margaret ,and Harold , now all deceased .
Bill's mother's name was Wilhemena (sp) . The name of the school was Koleen . Oh, Bill's mother was born in Germany."

I don't know if this is any help but it seemed a close fit.

My aunt, Isabelle McConnell, taught the 15 students of Kollen School in Wellington Township in the late 1920s and early 30s. She took, and I scanned, several pictures of the student body, some of Kollens have been identified. She also noted on a picture that there were Quantz and Moore children. She clipped out a short newpaper write up by Marie Kollen, student editor, describing class activities including those of , Margaret Kollen. The census shows the mother was from Germany. Contact me at LongRapidsMI@aol.com if you would like e-mail copies of the above.

I am related to the children mentioned going to this school. They were my grandmother's cousins. The Bill Kollen mentioned was my great grandmother's brother. His parents were John Herman Kollen and Caroline Kamiske. I know that this Kollen family (John Herman and brothers) spelled their names three different ways, Kollen (which is my branch), Kollin and Kollien. They were three brothers who came from Germany and took different spellings. The town was pronounced Shanevarden, (although I do not know the exact spelling, or location). It is said that they were from Germany, but also Prussia is mentioned, so I don't know where this town is, or what it is called today. I have quite a family tree for this family if anyone is interested in exchanging info.

Looking for a connection to an Alexander Kolln/Kollen. He emigrated from Germany in 1877. It would be interesting to see if this one ties into the other Kollen/Kolln/Kollins that came to the US. I have a feeling that Alexander may have been his middle name. According to the family history a brother and sister remained in Europe. Nothing has been said about the possibility of other siblings emigrating
