"The first Catholic Cemetery in Alpena consisted of two acres, was situated on 11th Street, where the City Pound
now stands, and was purchased from George N. Fletcher in June, 1867 for the sum of two hundred dollars. The
New Catholic Cemetery consists of twelve acres, was purchased for six hundred dollars in Nov., 1886, and was
solemnly blessed by the Rt. Rev. H. J. Richter, Bishop of Grand Rapids, on August 1st, 1887. signed T. D.
Flannery Jany 1st, 1888" This brief statement begins the history of the Catholic Cemetery of Alpena, Michigan,
now known as Holy Cross Cemetery.
