Alexander John Babington, looking for date in 1955 when he died in the "Soo"

I noted this Chippewa County Genealogical Society (CCGS) message board so thought perhaps someone could help me with the exact date of death of a Great Uncle of mine, Alexander John Babington. My Great Uncle Alex was born on 8 Jan 1871 in Co. Monaghan, Ireland. I know he died in 1955 (in Sault Ste. Marie) from the date on his headstone but do not when in 1955 he died. I was hoping that someone in the CCGS might know where that information might be. I assume the local Soo newspaper would have had his obit or death notice in 1955. Any help would be appreciated.

Jane, Angus and (granddau) Josie are living together in De Tour in the 1930 cenus. It is possible Howard died in Marcelin yet there is no mention of him in any bios of that area and my Mother does not recall him at all (she was raised nearby). Angus and his wife had a daughter named Mae (May in the 1910 census) but she did not return with her parents and sister to De Tour from Marcelin and I believe she may have died in Marcelin. I will be able to check on both next summer when I visit.

I have that Howard died at Marcelin Saskatchewan Canada this information is from a tree shared with me. No date or age. A 1930 census shows a Horward Mac Donald living in North Bonners Ferry Boundry Idaho. However I do not believe this is your Howard for it shows a John A. Mac Donald to be his brother living with him. I don't have record of a brother by that name. There is a possible match in 1920 cenus for Angus Mac Donald in Genesee Mi Flint ward 2 living with a family by the name of Bigler. Also Angus may have had another daughter, May W. Mc Donald. Hope this helps.

Jane Crowe McDonald was my gr-grandaunt. She and spouse James, sons Angus (Josephine), Howard, James C, and grandson John Paul relocated to Sask Cda to homestead. She returned to De Tour abt 1921 with her son Angus, Josephine and dau Josie. Howard did not return w/ them. He joined the Cdn forces in WWI but was not a casualty. I am trying to find out what happened to Angus and his dau. I think Josephine died in De Tour but cant find a gravesite for her. He is not buried in Sacred Heart w Jane and his siblings who re deceased him. Do you have any info regarding Angus? or Howard? Thank you.

Mullins and Salarie at Trout Lake, Chippewa County, Michigan

My name is Curt Burton. I'm attempting to piece together the missing link between the Mullins and Salarie. Nobody is left on my side that can answer some basic questions.
I'm James Hamilton Salair's grandson. I looked on the 1920s census data and it appears James and his brohter Clinton lived with John and Mary Mullin at Trout Lake. In the data, it shows Clinton and James Salarie with Harry Couch living there. I can only assume they were the grandparents on the maternal side unless they picked the kids up off the side of the road. That story was told me too. If they were adopted, I would assume they would have their names changed. I don't know about Clinton, but James changed his name to Salair later on for reasons unknown. Some say it had to do with the negative views of Italians during that timeframe, but I can't confirm it. Anyway, I'm trying to track which Mullin would be their mother, if that be the case, and what his father's name would be. He was allegedly murdered at a young age and the kids were left with the grandparents. I'm not sure why there is no involvement with the mother. She allegedly didn't want anything to do with the two boys. Having kids out of wedlock during those times probably was frowned upon too, so the whole thing may have been hush, hush.
If anyone has a clue, I would highly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Curt

The youngest was Edward Joseph Lawless, my great grandfather. His wife was Mary Alberta Hyde. The youngest of their seven children was my grandmother Lottie Lawless. She married Orville Christie. The oldest of four was my father Frank. I am the elder of his two children. Is it Nancy Burns who is sending you information? I used to work with her, but she hasn't answered my emails lately. I sent her the wrong photo, so it may be that she is mad at me because she used it erronously in her family history CD, which she obviously worked so hard on. I have a lot of info. to share with you, as well as a few corrections and questions and new information for her, if I can just get a hold of her. Email me at gkc_inc "at" yahoo.

I am researching Mary Draper who married Thomas McKissock, Oct 31, 1887. Chippewa Co. Sault Ste Marie, Mich.
The 1880 US Census has David Draper, Widower, living on Sugar Island, Chippewa Co both his parents born VT with Alberta, Mary E, Lidoni H, his daughters, and John W Carlson listed as a Son. Was this Joel? Who are Davids parents?

I am contacting my mother on this coming Saturday to speak with her about this. I am so excited to learn more about my family. And i was wondering if would be willing to share information with me, and if you would happen to know any one in the family that has a family tree book, that was made many years ago. I would love it if i could get a copy of it, and or see if anyone that has copy of it would scan it in to their computer and send me the pages. My two oldest children were the last two entries in this book, and as far as i can remember the book was a pale green color, and had a picture of my great grandparents on the cover i belive, and the name under the picture was O'Brien, my grandmothers parents. Please email me at Polocksgal@yahoo.com if you would be willing to talk.

Thanks So Much
Victoria Ingram

My mothers name was Georginna Gill

Some of their descendants still live in the Pickford area. You may want to check with the Pickford Historical Society at their website for additional information.
Thank you very very much. I did not have the date when they returned to Canada or the siblings second names. I actually just returned from Sault Ste Marie Michigan. In visiting the Historical society and Bayliss library I was able to view the Polk directories and glean more information such as previous addresses. I notice that there is the possibility that the Curries and/or Bell families may also be related??? If they are from Ontario or can trace roots back to the Isle of Colonsay.

Re: Sawmill Explosion, Frank Steele

Sorry, but Kathleen does not seem to me a member of my Watson family.

The article about the Shelldrake Mill explosion was given to me by Donna White, who seems like a very nice person.

BOILER BLAST
KILLS TWO MEN
________
Explosion at Bartlett Lumber
Co., Shelldrake, Sunday.
_________
Third Man, Seriously Injured,
Will Live; Bodies at Soo.

Frank Steele and Adam Schedeunk were killed and Percy Scott seriously injured at 7:30 o’clock Sunday morning when the battery of boilers at the Bartlett Lumber Co. at Shelldrake exploded and demolished the machine shops and dynamo room. Steele was killed instantly, but Schedunk was caught between two hot grates and his body almost burned in two without death relieving his pains for five hours. Scott is expected to survive his injuries.
What caused the explosion is not known. The two men, who are now dead, were acting as firemen for the machine shop boilers. The mill was shut down, but fires are continuously kept under the boilers. Scott was sleeping in the dynamo room, which adjoins the boiler room. It is evident that Steele and Schedeunk were working directly in front of the boilers when they let go. Steele was hit with some flying piece of iron or timber, and it is thought that he was not aware that an accident had occurred. His companion was not so fortunate, being pinned between the grates of the boiler and never losing consciousness until death came hours later. He was burned terribly. Scott’s injuries were due to being thrown high into the air by the force of the explosion. He was not burned.
The word of the accident reached the Soo at 6:45 Sunday evening when a telegram reached Capt. F. J. Allen of the Nippissing. The captain, immediately took the Nippissing to Shelldrake, where he got the bodies and brought them to the Soo. They arrived here at 12:30 this noon and were taken to the Vanderhook undertaking establishment to prepare for burial.
Steele, who was between 45 and 50 years old, was a widower and leaves six children surviving. Two of the children are grown sons, but the other four are young-two being boys and two girls and all living at the home in Shelldrake. Schedunk was a Russian Pole and has a wife in the old country.
The main mills of the Bartlett Lumber company will not be affected by the explosion directly and will continue operation. The two boilers, which blew up were large ones but were not connected with the main mill, which was not damaged.
The funeral of the two men will be held Tuesday afternoon at the Vanderhook chapel. Burial will follow in a local cemetery.
THE EVENING NEWS - JUNE 3, 1918

My ancestors originated from the Isle of Colonsay, Scotland came to Canada and somehow their son Malcolm was born in the 'soo' Chippewa Michigan. I have found them in the 1910 Thirteenth Census of the United States Michigan, Chippewa Sheet 7B

Donald McMillan, wife Florence with children Malcolm, Donald & John. Malcolm was born in the 'soo' Michigan.

I would be very interested in how they came to be in the U.S. , why and for how long. I do know they came back to live in Ontario, Canada at some time.

I would appreciate any information anyone is willing to share.

Kim
