Barbara Scott - death Feb 27, 1898 Boston

I was wondering if someone could possibly find an obituary, if there is one, for a Barbara Scott who died on Feb 27, 1898. She was a widow and was born in Scotland. Place of death was Carney Hospital, Boston, on 245 Commonwealth Ave. I have a copy of her death certificate and it lists her parents names as David and Alexandine. I'm trying to find out if she was survived by a son George Scott who was living in Saint John, New Brunswick Canada at the time of her death. Place of burial and Undertaker names are blank on the death certificate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Barb.

The surname of Ida, Retta L. and Minnie was Curry--not Coffey. My error there. I now know Ida b1864 d1887. No obituary found to date. Retta L listed as "teacher" in Boston, MA 1889 Business Directory. Can find no other references to Retta L. or her sister, Minnie. Any information would be appreciated.

Barbara,
Thankyou for your suggestion and I think I may just follow up on that lead. I pretty certain that I think that Hannah's maiden name was Flynn. I know someone who lives in Ireland that I think can help me. My father tells me that his grandmother's first name was Jenni. But when I look at the records its recorded as Johanna O'Donnell, so I'm curious as to where the Jenni came into play.

But its a very common name in these parts, so I'm just tossing this out.
If you think it could be them, one suggestion, since I'm not in touch with this women since we both retired, is to get your hands on a phone directory(and check it out.

Good Luck again
Barbara

Do you know where in Ireland, parents were born?
I have O'Donnells, from both Co Donegal, and Co Cork.
Some of each family did immigrate to Boston MA area including my grandmother Mary Ann O'Donnell, She married Patrick Bradley who was also born in Co Donegal.
I have John F O'Donnell who maarried Bridget Doherty-from Co Cork. They married in Carndonagh Co Donegal Jan 1881, immigrated to MA April 1881, settled first in Stoneham, and later in the No End of Boston. I'm not sure where their children wound up after they married, but I'm assuming it was in one of the Boston neighborhoods, like Hyde Park.

Good Luck.

Barbara

Massachusetts has vital records back into the 1600s. Why not check the 1820 census for Massachusetts to see what Mace families might have been living there? Note what town and county they are living in. See if any of the listings have a male under 10 living in their household. Then check the 1830 census and see where they are then. When you look don't put in a first name prior to 1850, because only the head of households are listed.

Good luck!

Rapelje, the present clerk of the board, is a native of St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada, and was born March 28, 1817, being a son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Vandervoot) Rapelje, both of whom were of American birth, being born in New York. Hiram L. was reared and educated in St. Thomas, remaining there until reaching his 23d year. In 1840, he started west with the intention of taking up land and making a home for himself, and located near Mt. Carroll, Carroll county, Illinois, where he took up a claim. He went to Savannah, Carroll county Illinois to reside, and worked a farm north of there adjoining the river. He remained there one year and then returned to Black Oak Grove, Carroll county, where he lived till 1843. He was married there in 1842, to Sarah Bridgewater, a native of England, and a sister of Mrs. Babcock, of Tennessee, Illinois. In 1843, Mr. Rapelje went to Aurora, Kane county, Illinois, where he worked at the trade of harness-making, which he had learned at St. Thomas, Canada. He remained there some two years, then removed to St. Charles, Illinois, where he lived one year, and then went to Batavia, Illinois, where he commenced the harness-making business for himself. He remained there some eight or ten years, after which he made several moves before coming to Tennessee, Illinois. After remaining there some five or six years, he removed to Plano, Illinois, where he had previously lived. After a stay of about one year, he again came to Tennessee, and has remained ever since. During his residence in Kaneville, Kane county, Illinois, he was a justice of the peace. While living in Batavia he raised a company of independent horsemen, and served as their captain up to the breaking out of the war. He enlisted in 1861 in the 8th Illinois cavalry, and was mustered in as captain of company I. They served with McClellan on the Potomac, and were under Stoneman and Pleasanton, and were engaged in the seven days fight at Richmond. In 1863, Captain Rapelje resigned his commission and returned to his home. After being in Tennessee, Illinois, one year, he was elected police magistrate and served two years, and since that time he has been justice of the peace and notary public, which positions he still holds. He has also held the following offices: Township supervisor, one term; postmaster, one and one-half years. He is a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellow lodges, and holds the position of secretary in both lodges. He is also at present town clerk, clerk of the board of trustees of the village, and treasurer of the school board. Before coming to this country, he was a cavalryman during the civil war of 1837 in Canada. Mr. and Mrs. Rapelje have four children--A. W., Hiram L., Lizzie and William R. They have had the misfortune to lose two children--Josephine, who died in Kaneville, Illinois, in 1858, and George, who died at the age of eight years. They also have an adopted daughter--Ella--whom they have raised.

At one time a male had to be 21 to marry without 'parents consent' in Mass. I'm not sure when this changed as I have not had reason to check. I bel;ieve the 21 age limit was still in force in the late 1950s in Mass

marriage record question

I have a relative with "consent parents" written next to his name on his marriage license in 1905. Does that mean he was underage? He was 20 a the time. Or does it mean something else, such as the parents listed were guardians, etc.? Does Massachusettes have a marriage age limit, and if so is it 21, 18, or younger? Sure would like the help if anyone knows these things. This has been puzzling me. Thanks. (I have posted this message a couple of times on different boards because I don't know which one it actually fits into, so sorry if you come across it a couple of times.)

At this date all five are now deceased. There are several of his children's offspring in the Rochester, NH area, one in Epping, NH, and one in Lebanon, ME.

> Do you know if there is a Vital Records Index for CT?

The closest thing would probably be the index volumes to the Barbour Collection of Connecticut Vital Records. Although Genealogicsl Publishing Co. has published 55 volumes of Barbour records they have not, as far as I know, published the index volumes.

Some of those CT records have been transcribed on Jane Devlin's site:

http://dunhamwilcox.net/

Dale H. Cook, Member, NEHGS and MA Society of Mayflower Descendants;
Plymouth Co. MA Coordinator for the USGenWeb Project
Administrator of http://plymouthcolony.net

Hi Danielle,
William Sutherland was born 11 October 1884 somewhere in Massachusetts, died 1969 in Middlesex County. Walter Rood Sutherland (may also have gone by Aaron) was born 1878 in Nova Scotia, Canada. The last place I find him is the 1930 census in Salem, Essex, Mass, living with step-son William Clark. Mary/May/Orpah(I find her in different places as one of these names) Sutherland Jacques was born 1871 in Nova Scotia, she was in Malden, Middlesex, Mass in June of 1933. Henrietta "Etta" Sutherland Wilkinson was born 1877 in Nova Scotia and in Methuen (unsure where that is) in June 1933 as per her father's obituary. That is the last I find of any of these people.
Thanks for your help!
Debbie

They sell old photos on ebay? What do you look under for that, and what else might be of interest to someone looking for genealogical info? Thanks!

Tina, thank you for your reply. The Eben Sutherland in Cambridge might be him. He was born May 1867 in Nova Scotia, came to America between 1882 and 1887. Was there possibly a state census in 1885? Not sure about the Eben Sumners. I guess they could have listed his name incorrectly? He has been very hard for me to track before 1891 when he married my gg grandmother in San Francisco. I know the rest of his family went to Middlesex County, so I guess I'm trying to figure out if and or how long he was there too.

I was hoping to find some kind of a Mass vitals index for years after 1910. Looking for deaths of family members after that: Walter Rood Sutherland, Mary/May/Orpah Sutherland Jacques, and William Sutherland. They were all alive in the 1930 census, but haven't been able to track them after that.
Thanks for your help.
Debbie

Does anyone know if there are city directories online, or who to contact about doing a look-up in them? My gg grandfather, Eben Sutherland who worked for the railroad, was in Westford/Lowell/Malden between 1885 and 1891, before moving to San Francisco.
Also looking for death/birth records for various Sutherland family members between 1890 and 1975. Are those online somewhere? Any ideas appreciated!
