Hugh O'Donnell Cemetery Search

My great grandfather Hugh O'Donnell died in Oct 1865 in East Boston. He attended the Most Holy Redeemer Church there. I can't find a record of his burial though I do have a death record from the City of Boston. His wife Catherine and the two children were buried in Malden at Holy Cross Cemetery but at the time of Hugh's death, that cemetery was non-existent. I tried finding records from the church but the archives are closed until 2009 as they move them from Brighton to Braintree. I was referred to Mount Calvary in Roslindale or Saint Mary's in Dorchester as possible burial place in 1865 for Catholics from East Boston. If anyone has access to or runs across Hugh's grave somewhere in the area, please let me know. Also, perhaps he could have been buried outside Suffolk County, as his family was in Malden. Thanks for any help!

You mentioned St. Mary's and Mt Calvary, but you didn't indicate whether you tried contacting them.

I've contacted the bcca in the past and they have been very helpful -> http://www.bostoncemetery.com/

Good luck to you.
John

Thanks! Yes,I did contact them. They looked for me in all the cemeteries with no luck. They said they did not have records for Mount Calvary or Saint Mary's because they were lost in fire in 1878. That's why I asked the Most Holy Redeemer for their (possible) record of the burial and service since Hugh belonged to the church. They are the ones who told me the records are all in the archives and won't be availalbe for a year or so. My only recourse seems to be looking for the headstone at this point as I haven't been able to find any indexes of those cemeteries online yet. Thanks again!

With a name like O'Donnell, which I have in my family, and the fact that when my late aunt died she left paper work on our O'Donnell/Bradley families.
One name on that was Hugh O'Donnell.
Do you know any information about his familiy in Ireland?
names, dates etc.
My great grandfather was James O'Donnell, m Susan White Doehrty in Co Donegal. They had Patrick(1867), John (1868, Neil(1871) Mary Ann(grandmother July 28, 1873) Maggie(1875, Denis(1878) and Philip(1880 I know at least Mary Ann, Denis and Philip immigrated. and settled in Boston area.
Malden, Everett, Revere, and later to Peabody and Salem MA

We also had O'Donnell cousin in Co Cork. John O'Donnell his wife Elizabeth Carney, and their 3 sons John F, Peter and Patrick.

My grandmothers brother Denis lived in Evertt, m Catherine McLaughlin (Mark and Grace were her parents I think) and had 3 sons. Denis and Philip both died in early 1970's

Hugh is a question. We wonder if he could have been a brother to our James, or to John in Cork.

If you should ever find any connection, or if I can help you. please let me know.

Barbara in MA

You mentioned Malden. I think theres a cemetary there Holy something, I should know this, as some of my family is buried there, but its slipped my mind, Maybe Holy Cross.
Surely someone at the Archiodeces can tell you that. or maybe someone seeing this who knows more than I do can.

I also have O'Donnell's buried there. Its funny your looking for Hugh, because that is a missing brother of my grandmothers. or a cousin. We haven't been able to determine that yet. When my late aunt died, she left some paper work, and Hugh O'Donnell was on it.
Do you happen to know the surname of his wife Catherine, thats interesting to me because my grandmothers brother Denis married a Catherine McLaughlin. and had 3 sons.
Lived in Everett, died there around 1970, and is buried in Malden.
Do you know anything about Hugh O'Donnell's parents or sibblings? Where and when they were born?

Thank you and good luck.
Barbara

Hi Barbara,

Thanks for the answer. Hugh was not buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden because he died in 1865 before it was opened. It's interesting that his wife and one of his sons and a daughter are buried there and not wherever he was buried. Hugh was born in Ireland in 1820 - would be very interested if the dates are close to your grandmother's but I think there were a lot of Hugh O'Donnell's. Another fact of interest is that his wife Catherine also had a last name of O'Donnell! I don't know what that's about but those Irish - you never know. marilee
