I recently found out that my grandmother stated on her marriage application in Jaffrey N.h. on Sept 17, 1908 and on birth certificates for my Aunt, my Mother and Uncle, that her maiden name was Woods and that her parents were A.J. Woods and Martha A. Snow and that they resided in Boston and that A.J. was a Merchant. In fact, my grandmother's birthname was Bessie Pearl Lemere, born to Joseph Lemere and Winnie (Gilmore) Lemere.

I am trying to understand why she might have used the name Woods. Her birth parents were still living, although they later divorced. Bessie had a sister Violet Lucy (Lucille). Are there any Woods descendants out there that might be able to shed some light on the question. Many thanks
