> the name Brewster seems to come from the best known books
> on the Mayflower

"Best known" is rather irrelevant - for the Brewster family (or any family) you need to consult the best researched and best documented work - for Brewster that is Barbara Lambert Merrick, Compiler, "William Brewster of the Mayflower and His Descendants for Four Generations" (Plymouth, MA: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, Third Edition 2000).

> So it seems that Richard Mann arrived on the Mayflower as a baby

Richard Mann did not come on the Mayflower - see Governor Bradford's account of the passengers in "Of Plimoth Plantation." Some poor writers have confused him with Richard More, who was a Mayflower passenger. Richard More lived in Salem, Richard Mann lived in Scituate. I know of no record of Richard Mann before 1648 [PCR 12:158].

People have been looking for the surname of Rebecca Mann, later Rebecca Cowan/Carwin, for more than a century, but her surname remains unknown.

Dale H.
William Brewster of the Mayflower - no daughter Rebecca?

I'm able to trace one branch of my family to Rebecca Brewster, who is variously listed as being born in 1624 in Scituate, Mass., or in 1630 (with some Mass. birth documents to back up the latter).

In nearly every tree in Ancestry and elsewhere, Rebecca's parents are listed as William Brewster and his wife Mary, both of whom arrived in the New World in 1620 on the Mayflower. Here's the problem: in all official biographies of William and Mary Brewster, their children are listed as Elizabeth, Jonathan, Patience, Fear, an unnamed child who died at birth, Love and Wrestling. They sound like the first hippies. Nowhere is there a child named Rebecca.

So there are three possibilities: a) Rebecca's parents aren't William and Mary Brewster, b) William and Mary are the parents, but Rebecca isn't the right ancestor, or c) the who thing is screwed up.

Rebecca married Richard Mann, of the well known New England Mann family, and that whole branch of my tree is accurate, according to all known sources.

Anyone else run into this problem? There's plenty of evidence that Richard Mann married Rebecca, but the name Brewster seems to come from the best known books on the Mayflower, which says: "...one Ri chard MAN became an inhabitant of Scituate, and the Rev. Samuel Deane's Hi story of Scituate, published in 1831, states that he was "a youth in Elder Brewster's family, and came to Plymouth in the Mayflower, 1620."

So it seems that Richard Mann arrived on the Mayflower as a baby, and that somehow he was related to or being cared by William Brewster's family.

I do not own the book.

Some libraries have the 'interloan' system or something like that - where, if you belong to a library and there is a book from another library that you want - your library will get it for you.

What if you asked your library? or what if you got on the message boards for Kansas and asked your question there?
or
Plymouth Historical Society - you could 'google' and see if there is one.

Good luck
Margaret

I've uncovered information that a book:

The genealogy and history of the Record family : with over one hundred immigrant ancestors who arrived in Plymouth before 1650, including two Mayflower passengers, John Alden and Francis Cooke - Dorothy Wilson

directly pertains to my family history. Unfortunately after googling the book there are only two copies listed as it is out of print. Both locations are in Kansas, one being in Dodge City.

Does anyone local to me own this book? I am in Southeastern MA...

I would really like to use this book or get a hold of it for a time. What are the library systems like out there? Would they loan it to me? Being from MA and 1500 miles away makes it rather difficult to walk in and borrow a book!

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Michael

You can see the original death register with Thankful Hatch Townsend's listing at FamilySearch.org. (You need to log in to see it, but registration is free.)

According to that, she died of consumption (i.e., tuberculosis.) It does not list her burial location.

FamilySearch has mistakenly listed her age as 111 (!) but it looks like 41 to me.

Dear John, I just discovered yesterday that Benaiah Dean and Temperance Gibbs were the parents of my 3x great-grandmother Clarissa Dean. I also found the Bible page submitted by Clarissa as part of her mother's pension application in 1838. It is, according to her, written in Benaiah's hand and lists the births and marriages of all of Benaiah and Temperance's children. Do you still need this information? If you have any other information on either of these parents and their ancestors I would appreciate it, and I can give you some information on Clarissa's descendants if you so desire.

Tilden From Scituate, Massachusetts to Ames, Iowa

Hawkeye Heritage July 1971 Volume 6, Number 3
Some Tilden Family History
The Tilden ancestry traces to one Nathaniel Tilden who was baptized in Tenderden Kent, England in 1583. He was mayor of the borough of Scituate, Massachusetts in 1622 and died there in 1641. Julius Clark Tilden is in the seventh generation.

The Tildens lived in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Vermont. A Massachusetts farm has been in the Tilden family for more than two hundred years. (See “Deep Are Their Roots” in “Country Gentleman” September, 1946.) Undoubtedly, present day descendants may be found throughout the United States and in foreign countries.

The name Tilden has long been associated with Ames, Iowa. George C. Tilden, eldest son of Julius, came to Ames, then a village, in 1869 from Vermont to establish a merchandising business that is still in operation. He was a shrewd businessman and left his imprint on the city. Julius C. Tilden and his second son Frederick came to Ames in 1870, driving a four horse team hitched to a wagon load of their goods from the nearest railroad in the eastern part of Story County. The Tilden brothers and their descendants were active in business, professional and civic affairs. Serving as mayors, as did their progenitor and by making their contributions to the business, civic and church life they were influential in the continued development of the City of Ames.

> What is your opinion of the possibility of Elizabeth Brewster b. 26 Jul
> 1584 d. 10 Aug 1638 being a daughter of William Brewster of the
> Mayflower. She married Thomas Emerson. There are conflicting
> opinions on this.

AFAIK no leading authority has considered her a daughter of Elder Brewster for more than a century. The date of the Elder's marriage to Mary (___) is generally estimated to be 1590. The first-born of the Elder's known children was Jonathan, born 12-Aug-1593 at Scrooby. Susan E. Roser, in her well-documented second edition of "Mayflower Increasings (For Three Generations)" (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1st Edition 1989, 2nd Edition 1995), does not show a daughter Elizabeth. Note that no daughter Elizabeth was named in the 1627 division of cattle. No daughter Elizabeth was named in the division of the Elder's estate. George Ernest Bowman did not show a daughter Elizabeth in the Bowman Files (from the early decades of the twentieth century) at the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants. To settle the matter you need to consult Barbara Lambert Merrick, Compiler, "William Brewster of the Mayflower and His Descendants for Four Generations" (Plymouth, MA: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, Third Edition 2000).

I don't know where you found 1638 for the death of Elizabeth (Brewster) Emerson. Torrey shows her as surviving Thomas, but I have not checked his references.

Dale H. Cook, Member, NEHGS and MA Society of Mayflower Descendants;
Plymouth Co.
> I agree that there does not seem to be any evidence that Abel
> Simmons was the son of Isaac Simmons and Lydia Cushman even
> though it is recorded in the History of the Simmons Family.

Lorenzo Simmons' argument on p. 229 of that book appears fatally flawed as it gives a year for the marriage of Isaac and Lydia (1722) which is ten years earlier than the actual year (1732). See the literal transcriptions of the vital records from p. 113 of the manuscript volume of the Duxbury Town Clerks' records entitled "General Records Dates Included 1645-1749 Town of Duxbury." The transcription of that page was published in MD at 11:81, in which the marriage is found in order in the town records between a marriage recorded for 27-Jul-1732 and one recorded 14-Dec-1732. Lorenzo Simmons' incorrect year nullifies his argument that "there is every possibility there were other children" prior to the birth of Consider in 1734.

Undocumented secondary sources can be useful, but must be checked. In this case the facts show that Lorenzo Albert Simmons was arguing from a false premise in placing Abel as a son of Isaac and Lydia.

Dale H.
Thank you all. I agree that there does not seem to be any evidence that Abel Simmons was the son of Isaac Simmons and Lydia Cushman even though it is recorded in the History of the Simmons Family.

I will keep searching for his parents.
Karen

> Do you know if the Isaac Simmons and Lydia Cushman (that you
> describe) are the parents of Abel Simmons of Ashford, CT.?

To answer that question directly, it is unlikely that they were, for a couple of reasons:

1) Isaac and Lydia (Cushman) Simmons were married at Duxbury 24-Oct-1732 [Duxbury VR 306]. Abel and Hannah (Read) Simmons were married at Ashford 21-Dec-1747 [Barbour Collection, Ashford typescript at CT State Library, 146]. If Abel were first born of Isaac he would have been 14 at marriage, and that is improbable. In that time and place he was likely about 23-25 at marriage, and so likely born about 1722-1724 (Hannah was likely about 20-22 at marriage and so likely born about 1725-1727).

2) None of the generally reliable sources that I have at my fingertips show an Abel as a child of Isaac and Lydia. Since Isaac was fifth generation from John Alden, and the Aldens are one of the most studied of Mayflower families, there is a fair amount to look at. Two examples, neither of which shows Abel as a son of Isaac, will illustrate:

a) The Bowman Files at the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, Alden microfiche #4 [as published by Susan E. Roser, "Mayflower Births & Deaths from the Files of George Ernest Bowman at the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants," 2 Volumes (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1992), at 1:10].

b) The Alden Family Database of the Alden Kindred of America, at: http://www.alden.org/aldengen/pafg36.htm#7355

The index to the former does not show an Abel Simmons, and the index to the latter does not show one born before 1765.

As a side note, to those curious about typical ages at first marriage in colonial New England, I would recommend:

M. E. Dwight, "Early Marriages Among the Puritans" (New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, 26 (1895):188-190)

Donald Lines Jacobus, "Age of Girls at Marriage in Colonial New England" (The American Genealogist, 27 (1951):116-118)

I probably have other articles concerning ages at marriage in my library, but those two are the first that come to mind. IIRC, David Hackett Fisher discussed the subject in "Albion's Seed," but I do not have that volume at hand.

Dale H.
> The answers we seek are not always found within geographically-
> bounded message boards linked to a single vital event ...

Perhaps so. The Simmons surname is certainly more plentiful in Plymouth County than in Connecticut. In Torrey I note only Robert and Thomasin Simons in Windham, and Simon and Tabitha Simmons in New Haven (though apprently with no issue), though there were some families on Long Island of that surname (but I know not if any made it across the Sound).

Read/Reed seems better represented in Connecticut and is found in Torrey in Windham.

In a quick look at Barbour for Ashford I see no Simmons entries prior to the marriage of Abel and Hannah, and few Read/Reed entries before the marriage, so perhaps they came from elsewhere, and as Ashford is less than twenty miles from Rhode Island that might be a vector worth looking at, although a quick look at the gravestone index for that state does not look promising for Simmons.

Dale H.
Dale:

I respectfully have a different view than yours - I think Karen should feel free to ask her question in any forum she chooses. The answers we seek are not always found within geographically-bounded message boards linked to a single vital event, but sometimes within related surname discussions, like the one I opened here.

One of the great problems with researching online, and it is a problem that is not understood by many who are researching online, is that what is found online can be many steps removed from contemporary records (if what is found online is even connected to contemporary records), and that each step of removal from those records can introduce error or confusion.

As an example let us take that Brockton death entry for Calvin F. Keith. The original record is a church record, so normally we would assume that the minister entered the death record based upon first-hand or close to first-hand knowledge of the death. In this case, though, the death took place in another state, so the minister learned of it presumably from the family, who learned of it likely in a letter from someone in Texas. This puts the church record at least one step removed from a contemporary record.

The First Church records of baptisms, marriages, deaths, and burials, were abstracted by a researcher at NEHGS. This is at least a second level of removal. The manuscripts of abstracted town, church, graveyard and other records were compiled into a master manuscript by the editor, creating a third level of removal. That manuscript was set in type by the printer, so the printed volume of Brockton vital records is at least four steps removed from an original record or contemporary account of the death.

In addition to the four steps of removal from the actual event, each of which could introduce error, the way in which records were abstracted and alphabetized for Brockton VR filtered out and lost some information found in the original records, although in the case of Calvin's death it is likely that there was nothing in the church record that was omitted.

The death entry on Ancestry is at least another level removed from the original event, and we can be fairly certain that error was introduced by the person who compiled that entry. The JPG of it which you sent to me does not show whether that entry came from an Ancestry member's submitted family tree, but I suspect that it does, as I can find no record indicating that Calvin was re-interred in Brockton, as that entry clearly suggests.

How can one utilize online entries such as this one? Since the entry does not cite a specific volume and page number, as required by the standards of professional researchers and major genealogical journals nowadays, it cannot be considered a reliable source and can only be regarded as a suggestion pointing to an avenue of research.

The first step suggested is to consult the published Brockton vital records. Those are likely available on Ancestry since they are in the public domain (I do not know as I am not an Ancestry subscriber), and they would show the source as First Church records. Ancestry does now own a resource which is as close to original Massachusetts town records as most of us are likely to get, the Holbrook Collection, but it does not include the Brockton church records. To investigate the church record in its original form you would likely have to rent the FHL film of the First Church records.

Entries such as this one found online may be useful, and may point the way for additional research, but those entries are almost inevitably not themselves records and, because they are generally so far removed from the original records, cannot be regarded as reliable.

Dale H. Looking at it now, I see that they are using your Plymouth Colony records and just assuming that Calvin is buried in Brockton.
Perhaps they need to be informed that mention of death in records does not mean burial in the community with such records!

He died on 31 October 1845."

Where did you find mention of his burial?
Thanks, Michael!
Yes, indeed, it was the cited article that set me off in search of more information, especially after finding that there is a "Calvin F. KEITH ... buried in a cemetery in Brockton, Massachusetts. He died on 31 October 1845." That works out to about the same time that the colporteur by the same name dies at Ragsdale's place. Thus, I suspect these two burials are of one in the same individual, especially considering that his headstone is not transcribed for the Columbia Cemetery, but there is some speculation that the Bell family cemetery and the current Columbia Cemetery in West Columbia are not the same. (I think, however, that they are because Angelina Kerr, a very early burial in the Bell family cemetery is today there in Columbia Cemetery.) Thus, I think Calvin's body was reinterred, from Mrs. Bell's to Massachusetts. I have had no luck with verifying that supposition, however.

Died--At the house of John A. RAGSDALE in Fort Bend County, on the 31st of October, 1845, Mr. Calvin F. KEITH, an amiable and pious young man who was acting as Colporteur under the auspices of the American Tract Society. Mr. KEITH had much endeared himself to the christian community by his very exemplary christian deportment and persevering efforts in the promotion of the noble enterprise in which he was engaged. Though far from the country of his nativity, he was surrounded by christian friends, and cheered by the hopes of the gospel in his dying moments. His end was peace. He was interred in the family burying ground of Mrs. Mary E. Bell, near West Columbia. Mr. K. was a native of North Bridge Water, Massachusetts.

I was wondering if anyone had access to the index at plymouth county registry of deeds or through familysearch microfilm for Plymouth county deeds.

I am looking for listings for a Nathaniel French, Freeman French, George French, Sarah French or Joanna French. They all lived in Hingham - so the dates would be after 1803 in Plymouth County and up to about 1900.

Thanks for any help.

> I have found plenty of information regarding John & Susanna, but
> cannot find an actual record that says Edw. was their child.

I would have to go back to the fiche or film of the Bridgewater Town Books (which I do not own and have not seen in recent years) to pull up the citations, but Edward was licensed as a tavern keeper at the house in Bridgewater where his father and grandfather had kept tavern. After Edward the tavern was kept by his son Edward, and finally by the younger Edward's widow (and second wife) Abigail (Beal) Howard and son Benjamin Beal Howard. The house was, IIRC, demolished about 1840, but had ceased to be a tavern some years before. The town records of the licensing in the family are perhaps what you need to seek out.

Note that I do not have citations at hand from the town records for the line that you are exploring, as it is not my line. I am descended from Sarah, daughter of the first John Howard.

You really need to consult MF 15 Chilton/More, mentioned upstream, to see what citations it provides.

Dale H.
Sometimes towns back then recorded dates of births in their records for people who moved to the town, & weren't necessarily born there. I believe the books containing pre-1850 Mass. vital records actual point out that events listed in the town may not have necessarily occured there, & I've seen cases myself before.

I'm not finding Edward's birth recorded with the general chronoligical Bridgewater records where other town births are recorded. The only place I'm finding his birth recorded in Bridgewater records is with the family record listing his children's births https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-31538-973-95?c....

This is often where I've seen out of town births recorded, as the town would just record births for the entire family, regardless of where they're born. I've seen instances where an entire family, who was born elsewhere, has their births recorded in town records like this.

The similar family record listing the children of John & Susanna does not include Edward.

I have found plenty of information regarding John & Susanna, but cannot find an actual record that says Edw. was their child. John died intestate, so there's no clear listing of his children in probate records either. There were other potential parents in the area as well, so I'm not sure why Edw. is attached to John.

> The place of his birth is not specified in the records, so he may have
> been born elsewhere.

His birth was recorded by the Bridgewater Town Clerk [Mayflower Descendant 15:50], and his parents lived there, so he was almost certainly born there. There is no need to look elsewhere for a place of birth - his family was one of the oldest in Bridgewater. His paternal grandfather was one of the proprietors of that town.

Because Edward's mother, Susanna Latham, was a descendant of James Chilton of the Mayflower you should find all the information that you seek in Robert M. Sherman and Verle D. Vincent, Compilers; Robert S. Wakefield, Reviser (Chilton); Robert M. Sherman, Robert S. Wakefield and Lydia D. Finlya, Compilers (More), "Mayflower Families Through Five Generations ... Volume Fifteen ... James Chilton, Richard More" (Plymouth, MA: General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1997).

Dale H.
I'm researching a family tree for someone, & she is descended from Edward Haward, who m. Mary Byram in Bridgewater 1711.

Edward Haward, according to Bridgewater records, was born Feb. 7, 1686/7. The place of his birth is not specified in the records, so he may have been born elsewhere.

Does anyone have a record of some sort confirming the parentage of Edward Haward? His parents aren't mentioned in the Bridgewater records. I've seen his parents given as John Haward & Susanna Latham in some books & family trees, but I can't find a record to confirm this.
