I apologize for taking so long to get back to you. I'm in the process of converting all towns and it is rather time consuming.

I'm posting this so anyone else who might be interested can check out transcribing for the project.

To get you started, go to http://MA-VitalRecords.org/Directions/HowToTranscribe.html. You'll find the directions. They are fairly applicable to Nantucket. The biggest thing will be doing the dates as I need them done.

Then, download http://MA-VitalRecords.org/ForDL/Nantucket_Trial.pdf. These are the first 5 pages of Nantucket's G-births. The e-mail address for getting back to me is on the directions page. There is no need to print the pages. Open NotePad and re-size so it is full width but shows only about 7-9 lines and put it at the top of the screen. Open the PDF and zoom to a comfortable reading level. Click the NotePad icon on the task bar and you're ready to go. Occasional adjustments are necessary, but it is very easy this way.

John Slaughter, Owner/Administrator, MA Vital Records Project - http://MA-VitalRecords.org
In loving memory of our son, Brennan, 11/10/88-5/31/01 - http://john-slaughter.rootsweb.com/Brennan.html

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your son Brennan.
I do not have a lot of spare time but I would be willing to help. I would like to start off with a small amount of work to transcribe. If it goes well, I would then ask for more. My ancestors were the original proprietors of Nantucket so I'm somewhat familiar with the level of detail.

Dave McTigue, dmct@verizon.net

Updated Nantucket VRs at MA Vital Records Project

I have just changed the Nantucket vital records to allow researching alphabetically and chronologically.

The alphabetic listings will be pretty much as presented in the published records. A big difference is that alternate spellings of the names and the nicknames will all be together and chronlogical within those. Abigail, Abby, Nabby, etc. will be together. Elizabeth, Libby, Betty, etc. Jerald will be with Gerald.

The chronologic listings are just that. An event that has no date will appear at the beginning of the entries for that surname. This should be especially helpful for the births.

I still need about 1300 pages transcribed. These are the births and marriages from G to the end. Obviously, with no transcriptions, alphabetic/chronologic sorts don't mean anything. There are still links to the images of the pages. If just 10 people will help by doing 130 pages each, Nantucket can be completed in fairly short order. I'll be very honest with you. Nantucket is absolutely the hardest to transcribe. Anyone willing to help must be a very dedicated Nantucket researcher or a masochist.

The Nantucket records are, for the most part, very unique in that the majority of records have far more information than any other town. This may make it possible for me to do something with Nantucket that I can't with other towns. Because so many records have the parents, I may be able to create a separate sort order that breaks down by parents. As I work on new routines for pulling alternate surname spellings together, this could be one of the greatest research tools available. It would essentially create a mini Family Group sheet. BUT, in order to do this, I must have the records fully transcribed. I can't index anything until it is transcribed. I won't even begin work on using the parents' names as sort keys until it is done.

Thank you.

John Slaughter, Owner/Administrator, MA Vital Records Project - http://MA-VitalRecords.org
In loving memory of our son, Brennan, 11/10/88-5/31/01 - http://John-Slaughter.rootsweb.com/Brennan.html
Hi David, my mother, Eleanor Joyce Hamblen Warner is Irma (your grandmother's) half sister. They shared the same father, my mother was a lot younger than Irma. I met you once when you were two or three and I was 14. We were in Edgartown visiting. Your mother took me to your house and I spent time with her and you and Mary Beth. I live in Washington state and I believe your sister lives here as well. She was in touch with my mother and sent us pictures of Irma's mother and Harry Hamblen, Irma and my mother's father. I think ithey have lost touch now. I have been to Nantucket and Martha's vineyard and researched the Hamblen family. Let me know if you have questions. I have one brother living, Harry, and lost my younger brother Dale this year. So sorry to hear of the loss of Richard

Susan Joyce

Updated Nantucket vital records to 1850

Good morning, everyone.
I have just uploaded a complete new set of images for the Nantucket VRs to 1850. There are 2,538 pages of records. These are much more legible than what I had previously.

There are additional transcriptions being slowly added. However, I could use two or three people to work on finishing the transcriptions. Basically, I need the transcriptions for G to the end of biths and marriages. The deaths are fully transcribed. Transcribing the Nantucket records is not easy. They are almost all long entries with a number of items in brackets. However, if you're interested, please get back to me.

Even though the records mentioned above are not transcribed, you can still search all images by clicking the page numbers in the pages with surnames.

Research the Nantucket VRs to 1850 at http://MA-VitalRecords.org/MA/Nantucket/Nantucket/

Thank you.

John Slaughter, Administrator, MA Vital Records Project
John.Slaughter@Navy-Vet.us

I am trying to find a death date and obituary for John Nicholas b. 1874. He is in 1930 census in Nantucket. I believe he is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery (his son Joseph is buried there). This might be a family stone so I would be interested in any of the Nicholas family members but particularly John. Joseph died April 4, 2001. What newspaper(s) would obits for John and Joseph be in? Thank you.

Indexing the MA Vital Records Project

Good morning, everyone.

It's been quite some time since I posted anything about the project. It's high time I did so. This is also going on the project forum and to the e-mail lists.

Over the last year and a half I have been working on two things with the vital records - 1. adding indexing information for the person's given name, the gender and date; 2. Reformatting each town as I complete its indexing.

I am working on the new surname index which wil look similar to the one at http://MASSMCW.MA-VitalRecords.org.

I want to make the project even better. This means adding search capability that will allow searching for a person while specifying such things as parents, date, spouse. I believe I can make this search easier to use than anything else online. It will not change the way I have the site. It will only add more capability.

I would like some help with adding the indexing info for the parents' and spouse's names. This is VERY easy, albeit a bit tedious. You must have a PC or a Mac that can run PC programs. You enter the names exactly as you see them. No middle names or initials. Nothing entered for something that isn't in the record. You do not need to be on the internet. You do not need to check anything.

If you'd like to help, write me at Indexing@MA-VitalRecords.org.

A bit more info on this. In the Bradford births to 1850 there are the following entries:

CAMPALL (Campbell)
Phebe, d. Elexander and Jonnah, Aug. 9, 1744.

CAMPBALL (Campbell)
Joannah, d. Elexeander and Joannah, Sept. 2, 1739.

CAMPBELL (Campall, Campball, Campell)
Elisebeth, d. Elicksander and Joanna, Sept. 17, 1732.
James, s. Elicksander and Joanna, Sept. 15, 1730.
Joanna, d. Elicksander and Joanna, Mar. 2, 1735.

CAMPELL (Campbell)
Sarah, d. Alexander and Jonnah, Apr. 11, 1742.

Notice all of the different spellings. I just checked on NEHGS. If I search only the surname CAMPBELL in the Bradford births, it gets only three hits - Elisebeth, James & Joanna. If I add the keyword Alexander, I get no hits. If Sarah's birth had been in an adjoining town, like Rowley, Georgetown, Boxford or Haverhill, you might not even find it. With the indexing I'm developing, you'll be able to search for Joannah, daughter of Alexander and Joanna, and you'll get both of the above births.

One of the things you won't get with my indexing will be a bunch of hits that are not what you wanted. If you are looking for Thomas HARDY, you'll get hits for Thomas HARDY/HARDIE/HARDEE/HARDEY. There will NOT be hit for Hardy THOMAS.

The new surname indexing will help you with alternate spellings. There are about 25 spellings for BACHELOR/BATCHELDER. (These were probably related early on. Perhaps the D was dropped and that's how BACHELOR came about.) Soundex works great for this set of names. But, what if you were researching CAIN? You wouldn't find KANE, McCAIN or McKANE using soundex. My new indexing will. With the addition of indexing given names using common spellings, your research should be far easier.

John Slaughter
In memory of our son, Brennan. 11/10/88-5/31/01 - http://John.EssexCountyMA.net/Brennan/
E-mail for veterans - http://US-Vets.us

Nantucket Vital Records to 1849

Happy New Year. At long last I have put all of the images for the Nantucket vital records online. Grand total, 2840 images. That includes the 5 title pages. I have also converted Nantucket to the new format.

Transcriptions are not done, but with all images available, you can still do your resarch. The records are at http://MA-VitalRecords.org/MA/Nantucket/Nantucket/.

Informational stuff:
I finished putting the new indexing information into the files. That information, given names and dates, will be used in some upgrades to the indexing. There is going to be a complete new surname index. That index will give the option of simply going through surnames, as it is currently, or selecting a surname and then looking for specific given names. In both cases, I've gone to a lot of effort to try and help your research. For instance, there are 139 variations of Elizabeth, ranging from Alisabeth to Lizzy. You'll only need to click on Elizabeth and the indexing will take you to all the variants. Surnames will also be grouped. If there are 10 variations, you'll find all of them together.

Another addition, which will use the date, will be a family list. Again, the surnames will be grouped. This list, though, will gather everyone with those surnames, regardless of county and town, and sort them by date. The lines will be color coded: marriage, green; birth, black; death, red. This should be most useful to people who have ancestors who moved around. I was surprised when I found that Provided Southwick's daughter was married and living in Nantucket. Provided, a devout Friend, was almost sold into slavery in Salem for her belief.

For those who have dialups, the births and marriages beginning with B & C will be especially slow to download until I can split the files. The C's because of the tremendous number of Coffins in Nantucket. Does anyone remeber the name of the tavern owner in "Moby Dick?" It was Coffin.

Also, there is a bit of a glitch that I'll try to fix tomorrow. When viewing a page image, the "Back to Transcriptions" link is wrong.

Finally, as noted, the transcriptions are not done. If there is anyone who is good at typing, has a lot of patience and can really, really proofread, if you're interested in helping to finish the transcribing, write me at John.Slaughter@Navy-Vet.us with the subject Transcribing Nantucket.

Looking for the LeBlanc or Blan family from Norwell moved to MV or Nantucket

I am trying to find the daughter of the LeBlanc/Blanc family that use to live in Norwell MA. I know Mrs L was/is an artist, and that their daughter Debbie told me, that they were or had moved to MV or Nantucket. Last time I saw Deb was before she got married(probably around 1990-91). I know Deb married a Steve D, and last time I heard from her they were living in San Diego but that was in the late 1990's I think. They had two daughters at that time Jennifer and Heather.
I would very much like to find Debbie. I knew her when she worked in Brookline MA, and became friends even though quite a few years seperate us in age. Deb I think would be in her mid-late 50's now--seems impossible, but she was about 38 I think when I knew her.

I also know Deb had several sibblings. and she was very good with crafts If anyone know how I can find her, I'd love to hear from her, if you don't feel you can give me her info. will you give her my e-mail. barb19401@verizon.net. She knew Ann Gwynn that should help jog her memory if she forgot.

Thank you
B

My Mary P Adams (spouse-Samuel Hartshorn Damon) has always been mixed up with Lucy Augusta Adams Cobb Young Smith's older sister Mary Adams (spouse-John Kirby), so I have done a little research on Lucy myself. Her son Brigham Young Cobb who died on the way out to Nauvoo 1839 (in Cincinnati,Ohio and is buried in the Old Nauvoo Cemetery), did Henry Cobb claim that it was Brigham Young's son? I have only bothered to get the divorce decree from the Spalding collection of her letters. In reading through those letters, she definitely suffered from periods of mental illness but considering her history and constant loss of loved ones, she was a good candidate for mental illness.
