I did not find an obit, but a death notice, for John A. Hurley in the Lowell Sun on Nov. 29, 1943, and a write-up of the funeral on Nov. 30, 1943, with his middle initial listed as E.

Lowell Sun - November 29, 1943

Hurley - Died Nov. 27, at his home, 34 West Fifth St., John A. Hurley. Funeral Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock from his home. Solemn high funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 o'clock at St. Michael's Church. Burial in the family plot in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Arrangements in the charge of funeral Directors James W. McKenna Sons

Lowell Sun - November 30, 1943

John E. Hurley

The funeral of John E. Hurley, a resident of the Centralville section, took place at 9 o'clock from his home 34 West Fifth Street. The cortege, headed by a car filled with floral offerings, proceeded to St. Michael's Church where a solemn high funeral mass of requiem was celebrated at 10 o'clock by Rev. John L. Crowley, assisted by Rev. LLewellyn Chadborn, as deacon, and Rev. John T. Sheehan, S.T.L., as sub deacon.

The choir, under the direction of Miss Irene Lawler, organist, sang Terry's mass, soloists being Mrs. Joseph Maguire, Miss Margaret Griffin, and Rep. Daniel Sullivan. Bearers were Fred Laurila, F. Raymond Grosser, James R. Roache, James L. Hurley, Arthur Richardson, and James Russell Hurley. Burial took place in the family lot in St. Patrick's Cemetery where prayers were read by Rev. Fr. Crowley. Arrangements were in the charge of Funeral Director James W. McKenna Sons.

I could not find an obit for John Michael Hurley. I did find an article in the Lowell Sun in which a John Hurley was critically injured in a car accident in early June of 1947, but it lists his address as Leominster.

Hope this helps.

Just in case.... here is the link to St. Patrick's cemetery "H" listings

http://www.stpatrickcemetery.com/PatPDF/Genie4-H-H.pdf

You can sometimes trace through the burials/plots. Btw, you can call over to them for additional detail (owners/others buried in the plot/etc...). They are quite ehlpful.

Good luck.

Wow. Ok. So if you look at the cemetery listing, you'll see an Agnes and an Alice. After I read your note, I did a quick check of the 1920 Census. I suspect Agnes is the wife of John A/E, and that Alice is the daughter of son John.

Ignore the John L reference below. The census itself lists them as John Sr and John Jr, which honestly only means father/son.

1920 United States Federal Census
about John L Hurley
Name: John L Hurley
[John Hurley]
Home in 1920: Lowell Ward 6, Middlesex, Massachusetts
Age: 55 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1865
Birthplace: New York
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's Name: Agnes
Father's Birth Place: Ireland
Mother's Birth Place: Ireland
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Sex: Male
Home owned: Rent
Able to read: Yes
Able to Write: Yes
Household Members: Name Age
John L Hurley 55
Agnes Hurley 51
John Hurley 29
Anges Hurley 17
Alice Hurley 14
Josephine Hurley 12

An Alice P Hurley appears at the same address as John A Hurley in the 1938 Lowell Directory, which I suspect is the daughter Alice from the 1920 Census. Since the Alice in the cemetery was an infant, I suspect it to be a granddaughter.

If you notice the Census record, it indicates that John was born in NY. FYI, Agnes and all of the children were listed as born in MA.

Since you originally asked for the obit, I think you limited the info available to you. I just did some quick/easy searches and found the following…

Wow!! Talk about some excellent info. I greatly appreciate it all. If possible i could use the obits on Leo, Alice, Mabel and Helen. Mabel and Helen are 2 g aunts I was never aware of so those are big revelations to me. The last ones from RI don`t appear to be related. Again many many thanks!

Thank you John. I really appreciate your help. I started with the obits as a way to try and get information on my ggrandfather, mainly his dob and any children other then my grandfather John M. I was aware there were other children but never knew their names and such. Guess I made the mistake of not asking enough questions of my mother before she passed away and her living siblings are either to old to remember or their memories are to vague. You have provided more then enough info to keep me busy for awhile, but I would like to ask how ya`ll came about the information you have. I love to be able to look up more like it without depending on the kindness of others.
Many thanks again!
