Hello everyone,

Jean-Baptiste Vien (Balthazar and Josephte Couture) and his wife Marie-Célina Poirier (Julien and Anastasia Joncas) from Lévis, QC, Ca. moved with their family to Lawrence around 1890.
Kids were:
Marie-Georgia-Anna, born 1873
Marie-Philomène, born 1875
Marie-Emma-Célina, born 1881. She married in BC, Ca. in 1920 to David-Arthur Doyle
Marie-Théodora, born 1882
Anne-Marie-Élizabeth, born 1884
Alida, born 1886, died in 1906 in Lawrence.

It seems Jean-Baptiste (John) Vien died before 1920. Celina Vien is declared a widow on the 1920 census.

Their address was 38, Trenton?? Street in Lawrence, Mass.

I would enjoy knowing more about them and their descendants in that region.

Thanks!

JP

JOHN FILLMORE, mariner, born c 1676 in Manchester, England

John married Abigail Tilton in 1701 in Ipswich, Massachusetts. I don't know when exactly when he arrived, nor do I know exactly when he died. Family history has him deceased anywhere from 1708 to 1710, enroute home from Martinique, West Indies. However, I have found evidence online at the New England Historical and Genealogical Society that he sailed into Boston harbour 6 June 1712 on the ship "Mary". I am looking for any information on John Fillmore (he had a son also named John, and a mariner also)especially pertaining to his life as a mariner. Any suggestions as to where I might find information will be very very appreciated.

Beleive the Rev. Boucher was a parish priest at St. Anne's on Haverhill St. Lawrence. That church has been closed for many, many years due to a fire I believe. My gggrandparents where married there in 1878 and Rev. Boucher signed the church certificate. Yesterday I spoke to Catholic Church Archives at 617-746-5797. Maybe they can help you.
Hello, Brad -

Maximillian and his wife, Ann, came to America in 1638
on the ship, John Of London. Accompanying them were
Mary, Joesph, Sarah and Jeremiah. Maximillian was the
second son of Edward and Mary Jewett of Bradford,
West Riding in Yorkshsire. Leading the group was the
Rev. Ezekiel Rogers who had been the rector os St.
Peters Church in Rowley, Yorkshire. Maximillian was
a leading man in town affairs and representative in
the General Court many times. He was one of the first
two deacons of the Rowley Church. There are about
forty pages in "Early Settlers of Rowley, MA" relating
to the Jewett families. This book is available through
Amazon.Com.
1908 envelope to Maria JOHNSON from Orebro, Sweden

I recently found a photograph of an old envelope that was sent to Maria JOHNSON from Orebro, Sweden in 1908. You can see the envelope on http://philgen.org (search on JOHNSON, select the one in Manchester, click on View, and scroll to the bottom of the page), or click on the link below. I am unable to find Maria JOHNSON in Manchester and wondered if someone more familiar with the area can find her. I believe that Orebro may be her or her parents' birthplace and this envelope will be helpful to someone in their genealogical research. The reason I have a photo of the envelope is because of my interest in using old envelopes and postcards in genealogical research. I have an article in the spring 2009 issue of New England Ancestors entitled Philatelic Genealogy (viewable at the philgen website) and have started the philgen website.

Here is a direct link to the photo of the envelope: http://philgen.org/index.php?option=com_fabrik&c=form&am...

If you have access to Ancestry, you can view the family tree at http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/13003677/person/-141596601?pg=

I'll have to track down those marriage records.

That's our Alcide! The address of 16 Pine is what appears on brother William's September 1902 birth record, so I'm sure this is my family. Interestingly, they had another son named Alcide in 1909! It took some head scratching to figure out that there were actually two of them. I think I'll wait until all of the early Massachusetts death records are on-line at http://pilot.familysearch.org/ to get the original.

Irene Beatrice would be part of the family. The address is also a match to the family as are the names. But, I have a death record for "Marie R. Breton" born 24 Feb 1913 who died 13 Oct 1913. So, either Marie and Irene Beatrice were twins or they are the same person. Since there is no Irene with the family in the 1920 census and no Marie being born the same day, I'm assuming they're the same person. Such drastic name changes seem to be quite common!

Again, thanks for the awesome detective work on the marriage! I'm still thrilled! I'm going to get the original and seek out the parish records.

You're wonderful! You found a lot of great information for me!

Your pièce de résistance is that marriage record. There are several records, even a phone book entry for Narcisse as Nelson and a couple of census records read Butler! The phone book entry for Butler even says "See Bretton" for a few years! All the other information - address, children, ages, birthplaces, etc. - are a match in those records, so I'm sure those are my folks.

Emma's parents are indeed Louis and Julie Lambert of St-Agathe-de-Lotbiniere.

And, that Joseph Narcisse Breton whom I'd suspected was my guy though the birthdate was a little off - I've determined that his parents were Narcisse Breton and Marie Philoméne Rosberry - which sure looks like a match for "Nelson and Flemen". (I have done more research since writing my original post and found that Elmina and Lumina were nicknames that she used, but she was born Philoméne.) I also exhaustively researched the family, including finding most all of the children in later life - either in Canada or the U.S. But, Joseph Narcisse just disappears, so there's nothing there to contradict my Narcisse and that one being one and the same!

Unfortunately, I have to go finish dinner now for some dinner guests who are coming soon! But, later tonight or tomorrow I'm going to digest your note more and will probably have questions.

You just made my day! Thanks for taking the time to do this!

Well, there are not as many records as one might wish for but here are a few.

Antoinette was married in 1928. It is registered in both Methuen and Lawrence, MA. MA index shows vol 24, page 318 for Lawrence and vol 33, page 348 for Methuen. The state web site for these is http://www.mass.gov/?pageID=eohhs2terminal&L=4&L0=Ho... . Or try contacting the cities individually; I suspect you'll have better luck.

Louis J. Breton m Marie in 1929. It is registered in Methuen. The MA Vital Records index shows vol.34, page 499, so you can get it from them but, again, you may have better luck writing Methuen.

The birth record for Alcide (one of the few) is for Dec 22, 1899. Male. born at 22 Railroad, parents are Narcisse and Emma Lambert. Parents reside at 22 Railroad. Narcisse is a laborer. Both parents born in Canada. [Vol 540, page 321}

There is a death record for Alcide in Methune on Jan 4 1903. He died of pneumonia, age 3 y, 5m, 2d. His residence and place of death were 16 Pine St. in Methuen. Burial was in ?Trn Con Cem? Lawrence. I thought that might be Trinitarian Congregational but doubt it.

There is also a birth in 1913 in Methune [vol 614, page 682] showing Irene Beatrice Breton, b 24 Feb. Female. Born in Methuen at 122 Railroad St. Father is Nelson. Mother is Emma Lambert. They live in Methuen at 122 Railroad St. He is a laborer. Both parents b. Canada.

There is a death indexed for Nelson Bretton in Tewksbury, MA in 1931 [Vol 81, Page 228].

There is a possible marriage; not the worst case of mis-reading notes I've seen. It is July 13, 1897 [vol 469, page 401] in Lawrence. Nelson Butler (sic) and Emma Lambert. Both reside Lawrence. Both age 28. He is a "form fixer"; she is a "weaver". Both born in Canada. His parents: Nelson and Flemen; Her parents: Louis and Julia. First marriage for each. Performed by Rev. J.M. Portal of Lawrence. [The Lawrence City Directory for 1897 does not list them but does list J. M. Portal, Pastor, St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church.] I didn't find a St. Anne's listed now. There is a brief description at http://acadian-ancestral-home.blogspot.com/2009/07/history-o...

Hope some of that helps.

Hi,
The Mary A. Haynes/Haines is in my tree, she's my great grand aunt. You have her father down as David, his name is actually Daniel.
And Ellen's maiden name is Rosencrantz/Rosencrants/Rosencrans (different spellings, just like Haynes is.
Do you happen to have or know where I could find info on Daniel & Ellen (Rosencrants) Haynes?

I'm at a brick wall here, big time..and I apologize if I sound rude or standoffish in my correction of names...I have a bad habit of sounding like that.

Thank you
Vanessa

Is there a way I can check to see who lived at an address in Lynn in 1906? I have an ancestor on a passenger list , Finlay McLeod stating that he is going to a brother in law in Lynn Mass , at 17 Pleasant St. The name is given, but is hard to read although it looks like Wm Perie. I have checked the Lynn city directories with this name of Perie, and it is not there. This name is not anywhere in Mass that I can find. I need to know who was living at this address before I can proceed further I think. I am trying to chase chase down who was married to this brother in law!

I Tina......

This is what was in the index on Ancestry.com site. I believe it is the same man I'm looking for as he lived in Havehill, Essex Co., Massachusetts for a long time. I think it is the same man I got the social death security # for on LDS. I see it is listed in the paper dated 21 Apr., 2005. I can't remember the exact date they have on his social death security info but it was was 2005.

It doesn't say what newspaper it is from but it looks like they must have the info on ancestry unless again they just have an index.

Here is the info they have in the index -

United States Obituary Collection
Birth, Marriage & Death
Preview
Name of Deceased: James M.
Hi Tina......

I'm not sure if this will help or not but this is what I did to get it to come up -

In the search menu I put in James M St Germain & in the box for the death I put 2005 & the box for the place (US) & the state box came up & I click on Massachusetts. A screen then came up & it is listed the 5th one down & it says death abt. 2004 but if you run your mouse over where it says United States Obituary collection it will give the date as 18 Apr., 2005

If it doesn't come up for you thanks anyway Tina for trying. You gave it your all.

Oh, & thanks for the Veteran's burial info. I didn't see it when I wrote you the last msg. Thanks Tina. I appreciate it.

Darlene

Hi Tina.....

I hate it when search engines are so picky that you have to have the correct spelling of the name or, at least pretty close before you get any results.

Yes, 'Nutt' is my last name (actually my husband's). I've traced his ancestors back to Leicestershire, England abt. 1790 or thereabouts. Some came over to US first landing in Brooklyn, NY (some staying) while others fanned out in US & Canada. I don't know if ours started with 'McNutt' way back further or not. I doublt if I'll ever get too much further back than I've already gotten but working on family history certainly is fun eh!

Darlene

Narcisse Breton/Bretton and Emma Lambert from Quebec to Lawrence then Methuen

I am researching a family who lived in Lawrence and Methuen. I've been able to connect the wife to her family in Canada, but am striking out on the husband. I'd love to break down the brick wall of the husband. Through Ancestry, I have access to the Drouin collection and I'm finding nothing there for him. I'd also be interested in connecting with other family members who might have information, stories and pictures to share.

Narcisse (Joseph Narcisse?, sometimes Nelson) Breton Mar 1869 - 29 Oct 1931 (unknown source)
+ Marie Alma "Emma" Lambert 3 Apr 1869 - After 1930

1. Joseph Pierre "Peter" Bretton 17 May 1898 – Jul 1976
+ Jeanne Ouelette Abt 1899 -

2. Alcide Bretton Abt Dec 1899 – Before 1910

3. Joseph Louis Emile "Emile" Bretton 29 May 1901 – 28 Apr 1972

4. William Joseph Bretton 5 Sep 1902 – 31 Mar 1983
+ Mary Helen Haley 25 Dec 1916 - 30 Jan 1996, m. Abt 1940 Texas

5. Arthur Breton Abt 1904 –

6. Louis J. Breton 5 Dec 1905 – 7 Mar 1989
+ Marie Carbonneau

7. Antoinette Breton Abt 1908 –
+ Aime Paquin

8. Alcide Joseph Bretton 22 Dec 1909 – 22 May 1981

9. Albert Breton Abt 1912 –

10. Marie R. Breton 24 Feb 1913 – 13 Oct 1913

Emma (born Marie Alma) Lambert was born in Ste. Agathe, Lotbiniere, Quebec, Canada in 1869, daughter of Louis Lambert and Julie Mercier. She and Narcisse were married in late 1896 or early 1897 and it's possible they were married in Lawrence, MA, though I'm not sure how they ended up there. I know for sure her parents stayed in Quebec for the rest of their lives. I can find no record of their marriage in Canada. Their first and third children were also baptised in Emma's home parish in Quebec, but the rest were born in Massachusetts. They later moved to Methuen, though it appears they may have ceased living with each other for the last many years of their lives following the death of their last daughter. I do not know if they divorced. Narcisse does not appear with the family in the 1920 or 1930 census, though he sort of appears with them in the 1926 phone book. Emma is listed in parenthesis after Emile. Narcisse has his own line and, though the street name is the same, he has no street number. Maybe he lived in the shed out back!

Records I have that concern the parents:
1. Massachusetts Birth record for William Joseph Bretton.
2. Parish baptismal records for Peter (1) and Emile (3).
3. 1900 census for the family in Lawrence.
4. 1910 census for the family in Methuen.
5. 1920 census for Emma and the kids.
6. 1930 census for Emma and the kids.
7. Death date - from an unknown source - for Narcisse. I do not have the original record or an obituary. Neither do I have either for Emma.
8. I have various records for the children after they left home, like draft registrations, census records, etc. I also have a New Hampshire death record for William Joseph Bretton, but, despite its late date, it's nearly worthless genealogically!

I am also toying around with researching another Breton family because I think they might be related. But, then, Quebec genealogy only has a small number of surnames, so it could be complete coincidence! That family is Louis Joseph Breton, son of Narcisse Breton and Philoméne D Bilodeau, husband of Angeline, father of Alice, James and Wilfred. I've done a bit of research on this family in Canada and found that Louis did indeed have a brother named Narcisse as well, but he's about seven years older. But, in the same parish where his parents were married, there is another Narcisse Breton who was born in July 1868, the son of Francois Breton and Elmina? Bosberry. Now, I have that my Narcisse was born in March of 1869, but my only source for that information is the 1900 census and, while I've found that to be correct most of the time, it's not 100%. But, usually I find the year to be off, not the month. (But, Louis Breton's 1900 census is correct on the year, but incorrect on the month as he was born in March 1871, not May as it reads!)
