As a boy I lived near a Limestone quarry in Huntington, Indiana, and my father often told me stories about his great grandfather who either owned or worked in a marble quarry somewhere back East.

I had forgotten all about my father's stories until just recently I broke through one of my genealogy brick walls and found that my gg grandfather was William H. Dutcher, son of John and Ann Dutcher. William married Flora A. Collins in 1878, and he was born in Lee, Mass. As I did some background research on Lee, I found that it was indeed famous for its marble quarries. Wow, Perhaps my father wasn't just pulling my leg. Wings of the Capitol Building and sections of the Washington monument were built from Lee Marble.

So, first, I am hoping that someone here has information on John and Ann Dutcher. I have an old photograph of William, taken in 1892 at the Lane Brothers Photo Studio in Great Barrington. On the back is an Address: To Mrs. John Dutcher, Silver Street, Great Barrington.
And Secondly, if anyone has any information about the marble quarries in Lee, I would love to hear from you.
