Hi Lucia,
Good luck on your trip to the cape. Too bad it wasn't a week later as our group, The Fish Family of Sandwich Mass is having our reunion starting in Sandwich the first weekend in October. We'd invite you to join us.
Well, for suggestions: Visit the Sandwich Historical Society. Don't have a number handy but the contact is Barbara Gill. In Sandwich, not for any data, but a great place to visit is the Hoxie House. Its a salt box built in the late 1600's that is in original pristine condition. To get a great feel for how our ancestors lived its a "can't be beat" visit. Also next door is the Dexter Grist Mill.
Also don't forget about visiting the old cemeteries. Not sure who your ancestors are but graveyards are a big part of making discoveries. For a list with directions visit capecodcemeteries.com Also if you go to Plymouth you must visit the old cemetery there. Even if you have the data adding a gravestone photo to your work is a good thing.
If you want to travel a few hours and visit to the NEHGS library in Boston is as good as it gets. Pretty much short of visiting a gravestone you'll find everything there that you'll find in town halls etc plus more. Its a 6 story library and is definitely heaven on earth for genealogists. If you are not a member I think the fee is $35 but its beyond worth it. And its on Newbury street which is shopping heaven for most:) If you go take the train from Scituate. Parking at the Newbury street garages runs $20/hr!
Also a golden rule is you have to have fried clams at least once on your visit- its OK my Dr told me they do not have any cholesterol if you eat them on the cape! (Once a year!)
Enjoy and if you need any lookups in the Sandwich Vital Records I have the books and would be more than happy to help. Who are your ancestors from the area?
best regards,
John R. Fisher of the Sandwich Fish
