I was at the KY archives again at the beginning of the month and copied some more records. I thought this one was interesting because of the list of names as witnesses. There wasn't anything in the file that stated what George Lampkin said about Elizabeth Vessells, but I think we can make a pretty good guess.

Elizabeth Vessells married William Lampkin on 12 Feb 1810 in Washington County. I have 10 children for them. Was William the son of the George Lampkin below?
Gayle Londeree

Vessels vs Lampkin, Washington County Kentucky Circuit Court Records, Box 25, pkg. 82, Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, Frankfort, accessed 1 April 2013, transcribed by Gayle Howard Londeree without corrections.

Pursuant to an order of the Washington circuit court June Term 1809 directing that the suit
Elizabeth Vessells by her Father James Vessells her next friend }plt. } In Case
Against
George Lampkin Deft.

Be refered to the Arbitration & determination of us the subscribers – on this 2nd day of Decr. 1809 we met at the House of said James Vessells – chose John Maxwell for umpire – after hearing the Charges alleged by the Plaintiff, the defense of Lampkin, and all Testimony_ Being first sworn, do ward as follows, to wit,
1st – That all and each matter of controversy respecting said suit, from time abate, and is hereby forever dissolved.
2nd – That the Charges Alleged to have been spoken by Lampkin against sd. Elizabeth Vessells, were highly Slanderous & Sufficiently proven that he spoke them; but thro’ the impulse of passion, together with listening to the false statements of another man, and the aggravation which he experienced by his son, who is under age, being permited to remain much of his time at the House of sd. James Vessells.
3rd – That as there was one charge of Less magnitude that Lampkin and his Wife made against said Elizabeth Vessells without any author for it, and from all Testimony as said Elizabeth is under a good Virtuous character We therefore award that the said George Lampkin pay the said Elizabeth Vessells fifty dollars in cash and all costs expended in this Suit & arbitration.
Given under our hand this 11th Decr. 1809.
John Lancaster
Henry Smock
John Maxwell

[reverse]

The Constable for Sums
12 Witnesses
Same his fees

Each same on days
Attendance as Witnesses
John McElhoe
Thomas Hogan
Susannah Vessells
Eleanor Ord
Jeremiah Cissell
William Mattingly
Elizabeth Mattingly
Sarah Ord
Francis White
John Dailey
Belinda Dailey
Sarah Fenwick
William McCauley
Teresa Alvey
Timothy White

The Arbitrators charge
Two days each at 9/-
Pr. Abraham was born in Kentucky, married in Illinois and started family in Missouri before moving to Colorado where my Grandmother was born. We have no family traditions or stories beyond he being wounded during the war, died many years later with a "dixie slug" in hip. Thanks for your time and information, keep in touch we may be relatives yet!

His parents may have been Daniel and Liddie Wright Rhodes. I believe Abraham was born in Kentucky, I know he served in the Union army during the civil War, was wounded, captured and held in Mississippi, was on the steamship Sultana when it exploded. Any leads or information will be appreciated.
Richard Stransky
Durango, Colorado

I am a close friend of Dr.Donald Hayden who lives in California but was born and raised in Wisconsin. He recently learned from a Gary Mills here in Missouri that they are related through their grandparents.

I have been trying to contact Mr. Mills or any other members of his family who live in Missouri to begin a conversation with them.

Don wants to visit his relatives here and in Wisconsin sometime in the summer. I thought I might me of help since I live in the St. Louis area and am also from Wisconsin.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I was greatly blessed by an uncle who kept meticulous records of the Christiansen family, back to the 1600's,
so I know how fascinating geneology can be.

Regards

Kenneth Christiansen

\

I am descended from Peter O'Bryan who was born in Maryland in 1776. For reasons unknown, his daughter changed her name to O'Brien. They also came from Md to KY to Daviess Co, IN. I have tried to find the parents of Peter and where they came from in Ireland. Someone had created a family tree with the parent as Patrick Brian born after Peter was born! They listed him as coming from Kings county in Ireland.
In reading the history of this name, the history states they originally came from County Clare in Ireland. My deceased husband who was an O'Dea has family from that area. He told me some of the History of County Clare and the O'Brien's were there fighting the British alongside the O'Deas but they turned coat and left the O'Dea's to battle on their own. Read the Battle of Dysert O'Dea

Ann, I have no further information on my friend who had the Billingsley book as she moved away. However, if your library does not have the book you could possibly secure an inter-library loan. The exact name is "The Billingsley Family in America." Descendants of MESHACK TURNER should be much more well researched now than back when I was researching 10-15 years ago. I have no connection with the MESHACK TURNER family, actually, just a Billingsley connection way back there. Good luck. Bennie

Good luck. Bennie

John T. Neale, possible son of Joshua Neale and Sarah Mary (Payne) Clarke

I am trying to determine if the Joshua Neale, who married Sarah Mary Clarke (nee Payne), was the son of Charles Neale of James (1770-1845) and Mary Maryman (1769-1822).

I came across a mention of a Joshua Neale in "Proceedings of the Orphan's Court of St. Mary's County, Maryland, Book IV-A, Nov. 1826 - Dec 1829)," transcribed, compiled & indexed by Claude G. Blackwell on page 36:

"CLARKE, William; Aug 1829; page 175; On application of Joshua Neale the court appoints him guardian to John T. Neale his son, who is one of the legal representatives of his deceased brother in law, William Clarke."

If I am reading this correctly, then this Joshua Neale had a son, John T. Neale, who was a half-brother of William Clarke, the son of Zachariah Clarke and Sarah Payne. John T. would have been born between 1815 and 1819. (Joshua and Sarah married 3/28/1815 and Sarah died about 2/19/1819.)

Earlier volumes of Blackwell’s “Proceedings of the Orphan's Court” show Joshua Neale and his wife as the administrator of Zachariah Clarke’s estate and Joshua as the administrator of William Clarke’s estate.

The earliest reference I have for a Joshua Neale comes in 1804, when a Joshua Neale witnessed the will of John Thompson (Liber: JJ #3 Folio: 82, Date of will 10/27/1804, Date of probate: 12/31/1804).

Charles and Mary Neale’s son, Joshua would have been about 12 years old, which seems too young to witness a will. Sarah was also 17 years older than this Joshua, although their ages doesn’t preclude a marriage between them. Joshua did not marry Ann M. Morgan until about five months after Sarah’s death, so there would be no overlap between these marriages either.

Does anyone have any information on another Joshua Neale, who was alive in 1829 or on a John T. Neale?

Note: This would be a third Joshua Neale since Joshua Neale and Ann M. Morgan had a son Joshua A. Neale (abt. 1823 to abt. 1869), who married Juliann Payne (abt. 1818 to aft. 1863).

I appreciate help anyone can provide.

Tom King
I have just published my first book and it is partially set in St. Mary's County, Maryland. If you are at all interested it is named "The Malachy Prophecy" by William R. Johnson and you can buy it for Kindle or in paperback on Amazon.com. My "heroes" are both from Maryland.

William R. Johnson
Plymouth, MN
(but born in Maryland and had relatives up until recently in St. Mary's County. Some of you may know of me from Ancestry. I have a Family Tree on Ancestry for the Johnson-Freeburn-Keen family).

Mary [--?--] Howard Forrest - Mattingly connection?

The maiden name of Mary is unknown. No documents have given proof of her parents, but there are tantalizing clues to possible connections.

She was probably born between 1761 and 1765. Charles Howard, most likely her son with James Howard, may have been born between 7 July 1779 and 1 June 1780 based on census and tax records for Charles Howard. If she was married about a year before his birth, and was at least 15 years old at the time she would be born before 1763. She is almost certainly the female above the age of 45 listed under Thomas Forrest, her second husband, on the 1810 Washington County, Kentucky Census. This would place her birth before 1765. Her last known child was James M. Howard, born 22 October 1801. If she were 40 years old when he was born, nearing the end of a woman’s childbearing years, she would have been born in 1761.

Mary’s name has been found on only 6 documents.

•	She was left wearing apparel by Ann Hayden, widow of Clement, in her St. Mary’s County, Maryland will on 25 January 1790.

•	She was named executor of her husband James Howard’s Washington County, Kentucky, will on 13 February 1802.

•	Mary Howard bought 16 acres of land on Prather’s Creek on 11 December 1802, for 5 shillings, from Thomas and Ann Lewis of Chesterfield County, Virginia. The witnesses were Leonard Mattingly Sr., Ignatius Mattingly and William Vain. Thomas and Ann Lewis also sold 35 acres to James Vessel on the same date. They had sold 67 acres to William Mattingly almost a month earlier, on 15 Nov 1802. They sold several tracts on 15 Dec 1802 (four days after Mary Howard’s purchase): 31 acres to Philemon Askins (who sold 130 acres in Washington County “on which William Vain now lives” and 100 acres on Hardin’s Creek to Ignatius Mattingly in 1805), 110 acres to Leonard Mattingly, 34 acres to William Vain (is this the husband of Audrey Miles, daughter of Philip and Eleanor Miles?), 22 acres to Charles Russell (married to Jane Mattingly, daughter of Leonard and Monica Monarch), 244 acres to John Maxville (Maxwell?) , 111 acres to Ignatius Mattingly, 100 acres to John Mattingly and 124 acres to Leonard Mattingly Jr. (part of 1000 acres patented 1 Jun 1782 in name of Peter Manson bounded by Praters Creek, Mary Howard, Philip Davis.”).

•	A Certificate of Probate was granted to Mary Howard at the proving of her husband James Howard’s will on 4 July 1803. The will was proved by James Vessels, a witness to the will. Mary’s securities were Charles Howard and William Mattingly.

•	Thomas Forrest and Stephen Spalding were bondsmen on the marriage bond between Thomas Forrest and Mary Howard on 14 April 1804.

•	Mary and her husband Thomas Forrest sold 16 acres on Prather’s Creek to Edward Mattingly (1786-1846, son of William Mattingly 1741-1817 and Mary Spalding) for $60 on 22 April 1819.

It is also interesting to note that:

1.	Benjamin Daley, an appraiser of James Howard’s estate, was married to Susanna Mattingly, the sister of William Mattingly (1741-1817) and Leonard Mattingly (1739-1829).

2.	James Vessells, witness to James Howard’s will who proved it in court, was a neighbor who had a son James who married Eleanor Mattingly (daughter of Joseph), and a son Charles who married Catherine Howard (daughter of James). He also had a son Elisha (Delijus) who married Catherine Forrest, daughter of Thomas Forrest (who later married Mary Howard, James’ widow) and Catherine Spalding (daughter of Thomas and Catherine Cooper).

3.	The maiden name of the wife of Stephen Spalding is also unknown. Besides being bondsman for Mary Howard on her marriage to Thomas Forrest in 1804 he appears on a number of other records. He is bondsman for Charles Howard in several court cases to recover debt. He is bondsman for Charles Howard when Charles becomes guardian of his minor siblings in 1812. He endorses a mortgage for Charles Howard in 1822. He was bondsman for Edward Mattingly when he became guardian of Dorothy Beavin in 1824. Edward Mattingly and Henry Parsons were bondsmen for Stephen Spalding when he became the guardian of Edward Blandford in 1823.

4.	Edward Mattingly (who is he?) and William Hayden (which one?) were the witnesses to the 1782 will of John Baptist Spalding (father of Stephen Spalding).

5.	William Mattingly and Benedict [Benjamin] Daly were the witnesses on the document freeing the slave Philip by Ann Spalding and her son Stephen Spalding in 1804.

6.	Stephen Spalding sued Ignatius Mattingly (probably son of Leonard Mattingly 1739-1829) for £20 for riding into his yard and shooting his dog in 1805.

7.	Stephen Spalding was bondsman with Felix Mattingly, son of William Mattingly, when Felix married Matilda Spalding in April 1823.

8.	Thomas Howard (1697-1773), who is possibly the grandfather of James Howard, gave a deposition in 1762 in the case of John Baptist Spalding (father of Stephen) vs. Henry Spalding, his brother. He also mentioned Ignatius Mattingly, father of Leonard and William Mattingly in his 1773 will in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. “I give and bequeath unto my loving son Martin Henry and my loving Daughter Mary a tract of Land being part of Gilmotts Hills under a lease during the life Ignatius Mattingly”.

9.	Sixteen names are on the same page as James Howard on the Oath of Allegiance. Ignatius Mattingly Jr. is four names above and Francis Mattingly is the next after James. This seems to indicate close residence.

10.	Fifty-nine names are on the same page of the c. 1780 St. Mary’s County militia muster roll with James Howard. Ignatius Mattingly and Thomas Mattingly (which one? When did Thomas the father of Ignatius die?) are on the same page. This also seems to indicate the families were in the same neighborhood.

11.	Philip Davis was married to Margaret Mattingly, daughter of Leonard Mattingly and Monica Monarch. “15 Dec 1802 - Indenture between Thomas Lewis and wife, Ann, Chesterfield Co., VA and Leonard Mattingly, Jr. Wash. Co. for 5 shillings - 124 acres part of 1000 acres patented 1 Jun 1782 in name of Peter Manson bounded by Praters Creek, Mary Howard, Philip Davis.”

Additional records, thoughts are welcome.
Thank you!
Gayle Howard Londeree

Please let me know if you have any idea who this might be. The photo came to me from my Aunt, Peggy Lee Miles who was the daughter of James Fenner Lee and Lillian M. Wathen Lee who lived in Leonardtown 1920-1980's. James Fenner Lee's half sisters were Ellinor Carroll and Agnes Carroll. It may have been one of the Carroll women or ??? Any suggestions are welcomed. No name or date are on the photo. Any hints on the possible era or identify appreciated. Thank you!

It has been a while since I received your reply re the Goldsboroughs from Leonardtown. I am still up a brick wall as to whom the parents of William Mahon Goldsborough, the lst, were. Supposedly, according to famly stories, three Goldsboroughs came over from England. Do you have anything further on this that you would like to share? Thanks.

My great-great grandfather was William H. Combs who served in the Civil War. He married Sarah Susan (Sallie) Floweree. We were never able to determine who the father of William H. Combs was. William H. and Sallie came to Jackson County, West Virginia, before the Civil War. During the Civil War, he and three sons served in the war. There were 12 children in this family. Throughout the family histories, we have found the name Contee ... We are looking for the ancestors of William H. Combs. He died in Mason County in 1896. Six months later, Sallie also died. Would appreciate help!

Dear Research friends, One again I am on the quest to learn more about another lost Great Aunt. Frances Bessie Gibson, was born in October 1885 in St. Mary's Co. to Jeremiah Gibson, and his wife Sally Cullison Gibson. There is an old photo in my possession that has a hint "Bessie before Sister Melanie (or something like that, the image is not too good). Her sister became Sr. Laurita, Sisters of Charity Nazareth. I will check with them. Does anyone know anything about this? or about the Jeremiah Gibson family?
Thank you all.
Margie

I am a descendant of Robert Clarke (1610-1664) who came to Maryland in 1637 with Father Thomas Copley. I have this documented with both SAR and OFPA. I noticed that in the "Life of Father Thomas Copley" St. Monica's Chronicle states that "Mark Clarke, a Catholic gentleman of Vanhouse, Surrey died leaving four orphan children, two boys and two girls." Do you know if one of these boys is Robert Clarke? Thank you for any information you can provide. Lowell Clark

Carberry's Discovery/Suttle's Rest

Perhaps the persons who posted information on Ancestry.com can help. Several files have John Baptist CARBERRY, who was born in the 1660's & d. bef. 19 Nov. 1728, St. Mary's Co., MD, m. 1697+, St. Mary's Co., MD, Elizabeth GUIBERT, b. ca. 1670. He owned "Carberry's Discovery" by 1715.

The information is somewhat verified by Elise Greenup Jourdan's Early Families of Southern Maryland. "St. Thomas," 550 acres, was surveyed for Emma TURNER in St. Clement's Hundred, 9 July 1663; also "St. Thomas," 550 acres in New Town Hundred, surveyed for Emma TURNER on east side of St. Thomas Run that falls into the main run of Choptico Bay. "Little St. Thomas," 200 acres, Choptico Hundred, surveyed 23 July 1664 for Emma TURNER near the main branch of Choptico; same patented 10 Oct. 1668 for Wm. ROSWELL. The above tracts were held in 1707 for TURNER orphans by John Baptist CARBERRY.

Relationships are difficult to state because of the use of terms such as sister or brother to mean in-laws, but this seems to be the case:

Emma (maiden name unknown) m1. Thomas TURNER [Sr.] & m2. Wm. ROSWELL. Thomas TURNER [Jr.] married as first husband of Elizabeth GUIBERT, dau/o Joshua & Elizabeth. Elizabeth, formerly wf/o Thomas TURNER, m2. 1697+ John Baptist CARBERRY.

Maryland Calendar of Wills does not have a will for John B. Carberry in 1728. However, there was an inventory of his estate 19 Nov. 1728 & 6 Je. 1729, Mr. John Baptis CARBERY, 14.182. Next of kin Nicholas MILLS & Eleanor CARBERY, administrators Mrs. Elisabeth CARBERY & John Baptis CARBERY.

Somewhere along the line of owners of the property, there might have been an abstract showing all of the prior owners.

--not my family
Carberry's Discovery/Suttle's Rest

I recently visited my cousin in St. Mary's County. I saw the property deed for the farm his late father (my uncle) purchased in 1956. The property description stated the farm was previously known as Carberry's Discovery and Sutler's Post. I later learned Sutler's Post was incorrectly listed and it should have been Suttle's Rest. This farm is on the road between Helen and Chaptico.
What intrigues me is I believe my cousin and I are related to a John Baptist Carberry who might have owned this farm in the 17th century. Can anyone help me with advice on documenting this?
