DUVALL & JONES connection Ho. Co. MD 1850-1860's

I am trying to find the connection between Beal and Nancy DUVALL living with Rezin and Margaret JONES and Joshua and Emily PHELPS in the Howard District of AA Co. in the 1850 census. Beal and Nancy Duvall are later (1851 and 1855) buried in the Jones Cemetery off Church La. Rd. Ellicott City. Rezin b. 1795 and 2nd wife Margaret b. 1805 had 2 children, Rezin b.1836 and Margaret b. 1838. I think Emily Phelps b. 1821 may have been Rezin's daughter by his first marriage (Mary Chadonett?). Joshua and Emily Phelps had 2 children William Joseph b. 1850 and John H. b.1854. But I don't know how Beal b. 1767 and Nancy b. 1765 are related to the Jones!!
There are other Jones (but not Rezin) buried in this cemetery, but they are mostly descendants of Arthur (1805-1892) and Jane (1806-1862) Jones and their children Mary (m. Thomas C. Baldwin), Isabella (m. J.T. Isaac), Arthur W., Abraham Alexander (m. Plancena Marriott) and Catherine Virginia (m. Mahlon Selby) Help!

Here is a link to scans of the ledger kept by overseer at Charles Carroll's estate Doughoregan beginning 1794. I've been looking through the scans for mention of a Lewis ancestor of mine who was supposed to have worked on the estate. There are many mentions of work done at John Frost's--I don't know whether he rented a farm on the estate or what his status was--I just started going through scans. But you might find some leads to more information in the ledger. Hope this helps.

http://msa.maryland.gov/megafile/msa/speccol/sc5300/sc5339/0...
Thanks for your interest. I will be in Baltimore for a week in May. I will research the ownership of the plot of land. I can't imagine that the locals and the county would refuse an offer to clean it up. The size is small but many trees and leaves cover the area. I just read an article about this area. Only about 1/3 of the original homes are standing. The homes that were on River Road are all gone. Floods. These homes were owned by the factories and mills and rented to the workers. Hope to find a person that can give a "good" account about the history of this village. My family members moved accross the river to operate a company store in Ilchester. That was destroyed during the flood of 1899?. They moved to Irvington in 1914 so I guess they had enough of that river :) This message board is a good contact to the family name of Birkmeyer, Hock, and Laun. All these names may ring a bell to many residents of Baltimore, Catonsville, and Ellicott City. Thanks, and I will let you know of any progress. Tim

I know it has been a few years since anyone has posted here, but I have some other info regarding the Ilchester area and their cemeteries. On the opposite side of the Patapsco River is Baltimore County and the small village of Thistle. From what I have learned in the last few weeks this cemetery has no name but locals will tell you it is known as Thistle Cemetery. Seems that Thistle Cotton Mill (the old paper factory) used this area for their workers and families. The reason I know this is because my GGgrand-parents are buried their and there monuments are still in OK condition. Yes this cemetery is like all the other ones in this area, damaged, and all stones and monuments knocked over. Seems the kids think it is haunted :( My ancesters are the Birkmeyers and I have posted a picture of the monuments on "Find-a-Grave". The key is finding this cemetery. If you are local, take Frederick Road west from Baltimore and make a left on Thistle Road. It will end on River Road. Go about 200' and make a left on a very sharp turn onto old Hill Top Road. This road will twist and turn through the old village and once you are clear of the homes, look to your left and climb a small hill to a flat area that is the cemetery. You will find it. I noticed very familiar names from the Catonsville and Ellicott City area. I can find the owner of the cemetery in Towson and contact them about possibly restoring it. Tim

Excellent! I was just poking about in the Maryland State Archives and came across a Belbeck, Grace E. in the death records. Here's the information:

Belbeck, Grace E.
1963 - Jan. 12
Balto.
W 62

Balto would be the county. 62, maybe the age? No idea what the W is. Here's the link:
http://guide.mdsa.net/series.cfm?action=viewSeries&ID=SE...
Scroll down to 1959-1968 and the "B" link. There's an index card image in alphabetical order. Does that help?
-bill

Grace and John helped raise several of my husband's cousins, about whom I know very little.
Thanks for looking for obits!

Thank you for being kind at my mistake. I was multitasting yesterday and all those "Stacks" should be Frosts as follows:

Mary Agnes Frost's father was John Frost. He was born circa 1835 is living in the 1850 census in Vansville, Prince George's county maryland with his mother, Alice Frost, a widow. By 1860, he has moved to Washington, DC as a "machinist" and has married a Mary Kirby, daughter of Solomon Kirby and Mary Parrott and who has also been living in Vansville in 1850. They have one child, Francis. John Frost dies prior to 1870. By 1870, Mary Kirby Frost has married a Henry Stivers and both Francis and Agnes/Mary are listed under Stivers in the 1870 census in DC. by 1880, Mary Kirby Frost Stivers is in Howard County, with Francis Frost, Mary Agnes Frost Stack (list as Stach) and 2 younger children (I don't know when John Frost died so I don't know if they are Frosts or Stivers, and, anyway, they are incorrectly listed under Stach. That doesn't seem very clear, but if any of it sounds familar, please let me know. Thanks, Maureen

So my new thoughts: Mary Agnes Frost Stack's father is a John Stack listed in the 1860 census of DC, wife Mary and brother Frank (this would make him the francis in the 1880 census). They are living with a Solomon Kirby and Harriet Kirby. If you go back to 1850 there is a John Stack born 1833 living with a mother Alice Stack (born 1808) in Zansville, MD (which is in Prince George's County, but close to Howard line). He has siblings William born 1838 and Mary V born 1840. I think it is this Stack because there is a Solomon Kirby in Zansville at that time with a daughter Mary. (and I think the Kirby connection makes sense from a newspaper article from the early 20th century, which list some DC cousins visiting some Baltimore cousins). anyway, if you can find anything, please let me know. Thanks.

Sue, I am a new poster. I am looking for information on a Mary Agnes Frost/Agnes Mary Frost born circa 1861 who marries a Thomas Stack around 1879, I believe in Howard County (District 6), Maryland. I believe in 1880 she is living with a Mary Stivers(under Stachs), a Francis B. Frost and a Daisy and a William (listed as Stachs, but I believe either Frosts or Stivers). Thomas was born in Baltimore, the son of Sarah Ann Hyatt and James Stack (who had married in Howard County). After James dies, the family moves back to Howard county. Circa 1880, Thomas and Mary Agnes Stack move to Baltimore. Thomas and Mary name their children Daisy, Edith, Charles John, Norman (m) and Carroll (m). Appreciate any info you have. Thanks.

When you mention the "online marriage license records of MD State Archives," which are you referring to:

MARYLAND INDEXES (Marriage Licenses and Records, Index)1649-1886, MSA SE27

BALTIMORE CITY COURT OF COMMON PLEAS (Marriage Index, Male) 1851-1885, MSA CM205

BALTIMORE COUNTY COURT (Marriage Licenses) 1777-1851, MSA CM174

Each of these has strengths and weaknesses, depending on when and where they married. If they married in Baltimore, you should check the marriage licenses (CM174). These are not indexed online at all, but there are card indexes at the State Archives. Ancestry.com does have a good series of Maryland Marriage Indexes that may have the date of marriage recorded.

If they married outside Baltimore, SE27 is your best bet, but you should be aware that not all counties are indexed. Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties have the most complete coverage, but other counties do also appear.

Have you located Thomas and Lucy in the federal census records, in 1850 and earlier? The pre-1850 census records might help you narrow down when they were married.

You do have one fundamental problem with your information: Howard District was not established as separate from Anne Arundel County until 1840. The District did not become Howard County until 1851. Prior to 1851, most of the records are in Anne Arundel County (with the exception of a few created separately by Howard District). In other words, you should be looking at Anne Arundel County for early records of Thomas Green if he was born in the area that became Anne Arundel County.

The reference to "Washington papers" in Lucy's obituary likely means that she had friends or relatives known to be in Washington or the neighboring counties in Maryland, esp. Prince George's, Montgomery, or Charles counties.

Hope this helps - good luck with your research!

City. One of their children was Martha A. Green b. abt. 1840 in Balto. City who eventually married William Towson. Daughter Martha's death certificate indicates father Thomas was born in Howard County, MD. Looking for information regarding parents of Thomas and his wife Lucy A. Unknown. Thomas and Lucy do not appear in the online marriage license records of MD State Archives. Lucy's obit mentioned Copy Washington papers so there is a Washington connection of some type. I think Aunt Hazel married Uncle Lentz "Red" Jestes after Uncle Mead passed. Not sure though and Mom passed in 2007 or I'd get the scoop on that one. But, I remember going to visit Aunt Hazel & Uncle Red in Oella. Then, I think they moved to Ellicott City. I get to Ellicott City, Catonsville, & Baltimore when I have time to research. Maybe we can meet on a future visit. Ralph "Sonny" Hensley

I've been searching for Ruben info because My Great Grandfather George Washington Ridgely and wife Eliza Evely couldn't take care of their children very well. My Grandfather, Marvin, was one of the younger children and he ran away when child services came in. At one point, one of the children stayed with Olivia Appleby who was staying with her uncle Ruben Ridgely. We had never heard of Ruben until that point. Most of the children (my grandfather's siblings) had scattered because they went into foster care. Would love to talk with you and compare notes!

Annie would later marry John Jones and live in Howard County, Annapolis, and Baltimore. My grandmother Eugenia is one of several of their children...Eugenia is listed in the 1900 census District of Columbia.

Any information on the family of Annie Rebecca Powell Jones would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Stephanie,

I am researching some families in Toronto and one of them is related to Dorsey from Maryland. (also spelled Dorsay)

John Dorsey was born in Baltimore, Maryland, circa 1825, possibly free but quite possibly enslaved. He came to Toronto circa 1855. He probably came with some siblings, or at least relatives Henry and Benjamin Dorsey. Some of them settled in Brant county, Ontario.

John Dorsey married twice, first wife Sarah Edmonds, from VA died in childbirth in 1862 and he married a cousin of her named Chloe Hickman, born in Richmond VA.

He had children with both wives and he probably has some living descendants.

He died in 1898 and he is buried in Toronto.

Anyway, I am interested in Chloe Hickman, his second wife.

Do you think this is the right family of Dorsey?

I was born at greater Baltimore Medical center in Towson, Maryland on September 30th 1969.

My Birth mother was 18 years old (SINGLE) at the time of my birth. her date of birth is 5-30-1951 (very likely a twin to a brother)
She was born in Maryland, 5'4", Brown eyes, Brown Hair, 130 lb , olive skin "very pretty with dimples" 9th grade education and was of Italian-German
decent.
My Biological Grandmother was 45 and maternal grandfather 65.
Birth mother had a sister that was 21, 5'2" Brown hair and Brown eyes, Fair skin with Freckles, 11th grade, Married and had a child.
Maternal uncle was 18, 5'6" Blue eyes , Blond hair and Fair skin and in college.
My birth mother tried in vain to keep me but she was very young. I grew up with a family that loved me like one of their own. I am full of hope, love, and questions, not resentment, bitterness, or animosity.

When I was eighteen, I was able to receive non-identifying information about her and her family. These few pages were, and have been, my only tangible link to her. I’ve read them over and over, and while they only capture her at a single moment in time they bestow me with just that,a view through a window into her life of some 40+ years ago.

Since then, I’ve tried numerous methods of trying to find her. please if anyone can help it is greatly appreciated. God Bless

Read more: http://www.city-data.com/forum/people-search/1540777-female-...
THE PICTURE ATTACHED IS ME AT 15 MONTHS THE EARLIEST I HAVE THE PICTURE WAS TAKEN DEC.1970

BIRTH FATHER (BORN IN PENNSYLVANIA) WAS 24 YEARS OLD,6'1", 190 LBS ,BLOND HAIR, BLUE EYES , FAIR SKIN, AND AN X WAS CHECKED FOR MILITARY SERVICE, MARRIED AND HAD A 2 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AT THE TIME OF MY BIRTH

Thanks for the suggestion. I have already tried Findagrave searching for Rootes in Maryland. I don't know where he is buried - the town or the cemetery, just the Social Security Death Index notation of where his last check was mailed. So far, I've just hit brick walls.

Thank you! I started to do that one Saturday a few years ago, but wasn't sure if I would be walking through someone's yard. Tried knocking on the doors of a couple houses, but no answer. Will feel better about it now that I know it's the common practice.

Thanks again!

I was just walking that cemetery two weeks ago. You park on Frederick Road and just walk back between the houses.
There is a little foot bridge over the stream.

My great grandfather, Peter Henry Johnson, gained citizenship in the Howard County Circuit Court on Sep 4, 1922, according to the voter registration records. Does anyone know if this record still exists, and where I might find it? Thanks

Hello, I forwarded your message to my cousin who is a Newton. I am not, but my aunt married one so I put the info on the tree. Hopefully she will contact you. She is also a member of ancestry and her family tree is out there too. Good luck!
