Looking for any info on Margaret Day and David S. Kemp. I don’t have much information but the 1880 census in Red Wing, MN shows her married to David David S. Kemp, being born in Virginia. I do not know her parents and I have no sibling info. She had 4 children, Laura, Hannah, David and Olla. The info I have shows the 4 children born in MD. The 1880 census shows she was b in 1833. The 1860 census shows David S., single, living in Frederick, MD. Margaret died in MN, unknown at this time what year. David's parents were Daniel M. Kemp, b August 29, 1806 in Frederick, MD and his mother was Susan Stauffer, b June 20, 1809 in Frederick, MD. Susan's parents were Joseph and Catharine (Cronise).

The closest I have is from Marriage Licenses of Frederick County Maryland 1841-1865. There's an entry for Zelophehad Duvall married to Sarah Herring May 30, 1855. There were no listings for a Zacheriah in the 1850 census from the census book that I have. Nor is there any listings of one in "Names in Stone" which lists all the tombstones in Frederick county up to around 1960. You can find that book here on Ancestry.com you'll want page 357 or so.

You can also try contacting the Frederick Historical Society http://www.hsfcinfo.org/ they seem to have some items on the Duvall families.

My gg grandfather was Jerome "Rooney" Duvall (1855-unk) from Maryland. I do not know what city or county in Maryland that he was born in. Per the 1860 census he lived in Jefferson, Frederick, MD with father Zacheriah (circa 1810-unk) and mother Sarah (circa 1820-unk). Per the 1870 census he lived in Catoctin, Frederick, MD again with Zacheriah and Sarah as his parents. However, I cannot find any other information about Zacheriah or Sarah. I am trying to find out who Zachariah's parents were and what Sarah's maiden name is and who her parents were. If anyone has any information about the Duvall's of Frederick County, MD I would really appreciate it.

I'm curious to know whether you might live in OH. If so, we might be able to meet in person. I have Valentine & Stout ancestors.

First of all, you stated that John Valentine, b. 1780 in MD had a daughter Sarah Ann, b. 1823 Fairfield Co., OH, and that she married Elias Stout. My records show that John Valentine had three wives: Margaret Ziegler, Mary/Nancy McCreary, and Elizabeth Bowers. And my file does not show a daughter named Sarah Ann for any of these wives. But, much of what I have on this branch of the Valentine family hasn't been proven yet, so more research is needed.

I also have in my files an Elias Stout, born 1821 Pickaway Co., OH, s/o John Stout & Anna Meyer. However, my research has go far enough to locate a wife for Elias yet. I guess I need to go a bit further on this family and start looking at census records, etc.

Your John Valentine, b. 1780 MD, was the son of Jacob Valentine, b. 1753 Frederick Co., MD, and his wife Anna Mary Freeze. (The original spelling of that family name was "Friess.") At least four of their children ended up in Pickaway Co., OH.

As for Paul Valentine's family history book on the Valentine family, he passed away, last year I believe. The address he had at the time I purchased his book was: 59 Little Glen Rd., Pittsford, NY 14534-2619. You might try sending a letter to Mrs. Paul Valentine at that address on the chance that he had a surviving widow, and on the chance that she might still have some of his books left to sell. I will warn you, though, that it is not an easy book to navigate, and as with many family history books, it does have some errors in it.

Karen

I can't make a direct connection to your line of Baynes. If you can trace your Bayne line to Maryland in the early 18th Cent., then the probabilities are that we share a common ancestor. I have a Henry Holland Bayne (b. 1755 in Prince George, MD) from whom I descend. Henry Holland Bayne (m. Sophia Duvall) came to Adams Co., OH probably abt 1800. I'm not sure if he came to OH via KY or PA. His son, Samuel Duvall Bayne (m. Eleanor West) is my GGG Grandfather. His daugther, Malinda Bayne married my GG grandfather, James Wright. I have a host of Bayne names that descend from Henry Holland Bayne, but I don't find a John L. Bayne. Sorry I cant' seem to help much.
Richard W. Wright

Hi Sue,

I haven't talked to Peggy or Mary Elen yet. We usually only get together at weddings and funerals since they moved to Pa some years ago. (Peggy is often out of the country on church business). But we do exchange Christmas cards, so I'll send your inquiry to them in a card.

Peggy's real name is Margaret Anastacia Mattare (b.18 July 1933), Mary Elen's(b.01Feb,1935)maiden name is also Mattare (Peggy's sister). Their mother was Margaret Anastacia Beierlein (28Mar 1914-6Aug,1992) the daughter of James Gough Beierlein and Alice Elenor Elkins. (Peggy and Mary Ellen also have two other sisters,Catherine Helen Mattare (25Aug,1945 - 11 Apr,2004) and Janice Elkins Mattare (b.01 Apr,1947).

Peggy is a Catholic nun. Mary Ellen was widowed while in her 20's, and she re-married. All of her children were by her first husband. Cathy was married and walked-out on her husband and kids when they where quite young. The rest of her life was troubled by drugs, alcohol and un-stable relationships. She was reconciled to her children when they were in their teens or early 20's. Janice was also divorced but raised her two children. She did not re-marry. She managed several nursing homes for a number of years, but is now semi-retired. When my wife's sister became disabled from Muscular Dystrophy in the late 1980's, Janice got her admitted into a nursing home which she managed, although she had to bend some rules and "jump" a waiting list to do so. Let me know if you want more info.

Tony

Welcome to the hunt. My wife, Carole S. McDonough Severn, is Helen's Grandniece.

My mother-in law, Hyacinth Markoe Glaeser,(Verly's daughter)said Helen was the "glamour girl" of the family. We have a photo of her when she was in her 20's (I guess). She was pretty. Also have a family group photo of Helen with her brothers and sisters, parents and Ottila (Tillie) from the 1920's? Let me know if you want copies..

I do not believe there was a James M. Markoe. There was a prominent Markoe family living in D.C., but no James.

I heard the "Civil War soldier" story several times from my mother-in-law, and my wife heard it several times from her grandmother, Verly. There was a Markoe who was a possible father, but his name wasn't James. He was a Confederate soldier, from the D.C. Markoe family, who became prominent in Baltimore after the Civil War. He had the name "Markoe"; he had been a "Civil War Soldier"; he was not married at the time William was conceived;and he lived within 50 miles of Frederick for much of his life. He did not live in Baltimore before the war--so it is possible he "wandered" around the Maryland/D.C. area during the years immediately after the end of the war in 1865-before settling down in Baltimore.

I can definitely place him in Richmond, VA in 1865 and in Frederick for a few days in the early 1870's, but I don't have any data to say he was in Frederick in 1867 when William was conceived. So, I can't definitely say he was William's father.

If you do turn-up a James Markoe, please let me know. The "Civil war soldier" story is colorful, but it's not important if it isn't true.

I can send you the Markoe family tree info I have if you tell me where to send it. I would like to get info on Helen's family after she left Frederick. All I have is that she married a man named Noyes, and her date of death from the S.S. Index.

Tony Severn

My mother-in-law was Helen C Markoe Noyes, and I have recently launched an effort to research her family history. Hadn't realized what a challenge it would be! I'm grateful to build on y'all's research.

All I have found so far has been census records of William G Markoe's family from 1800 through 1930, and the state death record. He lived with an uncle in 1900 and with Charles Miss in 1880. I, too, cannot find James M Markoe, just Jacob Bedheimer. I will post any additional findings as they occur, but confess y'all are 'way ahead of me!

Those of you who have followed the Liebenstein/Livingston thread over the past decade may be interested to know that we have matched the DNA of descendants of three Livingston/Levingston brothers or cousins who settled circa 1800-1810 in Licking County, Ohio, to a descendant of Johan Berhardt Liebenstein. This was done on the FamilyTreeDNA site. It supports Glenn Livingston's email to me months ago that he thought we were all related. We are now looking for documentation on Johannes Liebenstein who was born in Duehren, Germany in 1723, a nephew to Berhardt and Martin, and may have been the immigrant in 1755 immigration list. We'd like to prove that he went from Frederick MD to Fayette County PA on the Braddock Road and fathered a number of sons, plus dau. Susannah who married Andrew Mires.

We'd also like to find a Livingston male who descended from David Liebenstein/Livingston of Somerset County and have his DNA tested.

This is quite a surprise. Did you find the obit "on line" or actually see the newspaper? I never came across it, but I've never searched the actual newspaper archives. I never saw any Markoe's on any Frederick census record until William appeared, did you?

According to Hyacinth, Tillie was never married before she married George. Now I wonder if that is correct.

I have a family group photo (late 1920's - early 1930's) of "Tillie" ( Hyacinth said Ottila was always called "Tillie") , William and Ada, all of their children (except Verly)and several of Tillie's great grand-children. Hyacinth identified all of the adults, but wasn't sure about the great-grandchildren. I'll send it if you want a copy. I also have a photo of the Markoe home at 505 S. Market St. if you want it.

Which of the Markoe clan are you descended from? Do you live near Frederick? Since your original post have you found more info on actual death dates and children? I'll send what I have.

Tony & Carole (McDonough) Severn

Hi!. Tony Severn again. After I studied your MArkoe list I saw some discrepancies. The most important one is the father of William Markoe. Otilla Miss never married anyone named Markoe, only George Bedheimer.

I don't know where you found the info stating James Markoe as William's father. The story told by all ofWilliam's children was that William's father was Confederate (former) soldier. I have never found a reference for a James Markoe except for one in Philadelphia , who was a Union army officer.

The Markoe family was prominent in D.C., Philadelphia and New York. Frank Markoe was a LT. in the Confederate army and lived in Baltimore after the war. He was a member of the social and political elite in Maryland. He was in Frederick several times in the late 1860's, but that's all the definite info I have found.

Do you have info on James Markoe?

I have more definite birth and death dates for the Markoe children, plus other info.

Tony Severn

Hi ! My wife is Verly Markoe's grand-daughter. Her mother, Hyacinth Glaeser, was Verly's daughter (only child) and lived with us for some years. She told us some info on the family. Howard Glaeser was Verly's husband, but not Hyacinth's father. That was a man named Russell Ray (long story).

My wife spent time in Frederick with her cousins, aunts and uncles when she was a girl, so she knew some of them first-hand. I have family tree info and a few anecdotes for the family, but your info looks pretty accurate. The big mystery has been who was William Markoe's father. We have a good "suspect", but no proof.

Most of the family is buried in Mt Olivet in Frederick. Contact me at: Tonycheship@aol.com or my wife at KiBiJaRe@comcast.net if you want more info. My wife has been wanting to get back in touch with the Frederick family.

Tony & Carole Severn
Hebron, MD (Eastern Shore)

My great-grandfather's (Wm. Howard Gilliss) mother was named Rachel Esworthy Gilliss. I'm not sure if this is the Rachel in your 1850 Census? Her and her husband are buried at Poplar Springs Cemetery, on Watersville Rd.(between rt.70 & rt.144) in Poplar Springs. The stone is a large family stone with the only inscription being Gilliss, so I'm not sure of dates. My great aunt (Eunice Gilliss Layman), is 98 yrs. old & told me where to find the stone. There are other Esworthys buried there also. Clara May Esworthy 5/5/1899 - 5/30/1965.
Robert H. Esworthy, son of Henry & Annie, 8/27//1878 - 2/27/1899.

I have found other Esworthys buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery, right outside of Mt. Airy. They are Albert G. Esworthy 1894 - 1977, Ercie N. Esworthy 1897 - 1978, E. Madeline Esworthy 1931-1932, J. Alvin Esworthy 1926-1928.
My Aunt doesn' remember anything about her grandmother Rachel, except she thought she had a sister named Kate, which could be short for Catherine and that they were Native Americans.

Hope this info is helpful. I would appreciate any other info that you would like to pass on.

Thanks.

Has anyone found the grave of Gabriel Sr at the Clemson Family Cemetery. When we went there a few years ago it was so overgrown we could not find it. I read that someone placed a bronze plaque there in the 1990's. Does anyone have a picture?

I visited the church a few years ago and confirmed that the original records had been sent to the Moravian Church Archives in Bethlehem, PA. The church retained an incomplete photocopy set of these records. A fairly complete photocopy set can be found in the main reading room at the MD Historical Society Library in Baltimore, MD. It has not been transcibed and/or published.

Thank you so much for taking time to list those for me. I hope it will be helpful to others as well. Some of the people are my known ancestors, the others I will have to take a further look at.

I will try to pass it forward and help someone else with their research.
