I am also looking for Sliders from this area. I would appreciate any information you may have seen about Joseph Slider, possibly married to Elizabeth Morgan, and his son Jacob Slider (b abt 1803), married to Nancy (Hanner?). I am of the understanding they were from the Green Ridge area, which I believe is what you are describing here as well. Jacob is buried in WV and I believe Joseph stayed there in MD and is probably buried somewhere in Green Ridge area, probably what is now the state park. His other sons are John and Solomon. Solomon went to WV w/Jacob and I believe John stayed there in MD. Thank you!

Looking for info on this person who was born in MD in 1882. Dont know her parents names, but she was raised by the Baker family in Carroll county. She is believed to be a cousin. She married Levi Harvey Barnes in 1914 and they lived in Baltimore City. They had one child with whom they lived in later life. They both died in Baltimore City and are buried at Lorraine Park cemetery in Woodlawn MD on Dogwood Rd. One of their great grandsons is buried with Elizabeth. Any other info would help especially of her parents and the relationship to the Bakers.

Hi Dianna,
Sorry I confused you. I was referring to the Davis family cemetery in the Mount Airy area where I grew up. I'll have to go check out the one you found. I mentioned it because they are related to the Dorsey and Gillis families. I apologize. My Dad is very ill and I'm a bit out of sorts. If you'd like, I will be happy to send you a copy of maps of counties with Dorseys present in 1860. I've highlighted all the Dorseys in red. it may help you in your research. You will also notice Davis, Gillis, Ridgely, Waters, Gosnell, and many other who are all related to each other...at least in the area I am from in Carroll County. I also have other maps if you are interested. Wealthy families paid to have their names added to maps. I'm very glad they did. It's a great help in researching.
Caran

I was looking for information on the area that I live in and discovered that there was a paper mill and soapstone quarry not far from my property. I also saw that there was once a road that is no longer in use. We are going to go out there this weekend and see if we can follow it (It is very overgrown). But, then I realized this would be helpful to researchers. It has so much information. I am starting to look at maps in other states now to see if I can find info on my own family trees. Enjoy! If you need any research done in the area, let me know. I will try to help.

I have been trying to figure out a family from the 1850 census. A cousin had done the research but has come to a brickwall.
We can trace our great grandmother to Anna Dora Gosnell born 10/6/1843 in Carroll Co., MD. She married John Elgen 11/12/1860 in Carroll Co., MD as well.
In the 1850 census, she is listed with her mother Eve Ann Haines in the home of James Gasnell. The way the census taker wrote it, it looks like 2 separate families.
Then in the 1860 census, James is not listed and Eve Haines is listed as a widow.
Tobias and Anna later show using the surname Gosnell. Eve's headstone has Haines.
If you pull up the 1840 census, the ages of the residents that live in James Gosnell's home are pretty consistent with Eve and the older children.
I am lost on this because I don't know if James is Eve's father or her spouse. I cannot find marriage records nor info on death records.

Hope you can help me.

Rick

I am looking for an obituary for Jacob R. Shamer. He was born 24 August 1837 and died 17 April 1912. He is buried at St. Mark's in Snydersburg. I have searched the papers available on-line at Ancestry, but the Carroll County paper is not there. Can anyone help?

Vanessa

1877 Carroll County Map with Names

Here is a website with maps of Carroll County in 1877. The maps have homeowner names and locations of their homes and businesses. They are terrific maps that you can zoom in on and they can give you links and ideas of where to look for clues about neighbors and other families in the area. The website has maps for many other states as well. Here is the link for the CC map of 1877. Enjoy (Oh, you can also buy maps from them).
http://www.historicmapworks.com/Atlas/US/10853/Carroll+Count...

Not sure if this will help you. There is an old map of Carroll County Maryland dated 1877 that lists prominent names by their homestead locations or business locations. The name Streaker appears on this map. If you can get to it, look to the Eldersburg area, and to the left of that is listed PORTERS P.O. Underneath that, a little ways down, you will see A. Streaker listed twice. The map is the Freedom, Myersville map. The link is: http://www.historicmapworks.com/Map/US/166490/Freedom++Myers... IF THAT DOES NOT WORK, you can google old 1877 map of Carroll County Maryland and then select historic mapworks, and navigate to the freedom, myersville map. You can magnify, crop, and buy the map, too. I love this map. Cheers ~ Tracy Christy, Carroll County Maryland.

For those searching for Dorsey's in Maryland, there is a very very old cemetery in Howard County that is all but forgotten. It is in the most unlikely place. If you know where Apple Ford is and where Lone Star Restaurant is or was (not sure if it is still there), the cemetary is right off the Lone Star parking lot. There are a bunch of bushes in the distance and once, I walked out there and discovered it is a family cemetery for the Dorsey's. The stone's are all very old, dating in the 1700s and 1800s. And all of them are Dorsey's or married Dorsey's. It is a very big family in Maryland and so many places are named after them. Not sure if any of you knew of this place. I can try to make a trip out there at some point and take pictures of all the graves. Not sure if this has already been done and posted on find a grave. I will double check. Thanks!
~ Tracy Christy in Marriottsville, Carroll County, Maryland.

Thanks Nancy...Peter Ridinger is buried in German Reformed Cemetery in Taneytown in 1842. Been looking for any Ridingers in the general area who MIGHT be his parents. He married Catherine Schriner and her father is buried in Grace Reformed Cemetery (according to History of Western Maryland).

Also, Peter & Catherine Ridinger's son, Samuel, married Louise Catherine Caskey who died 1866 and is buried at St Paul's Lutheran in Harney (according to the Carroll County Times) but I have not been able to locate any info in Find-a-Grave to verify or get a picture of the stone. I suspect her parents MAY have been buried in Pennsylvania as she was born in Littlestown...but would also like to find any Caskey relatives...IF they happened to move to MD.

AND there is Samuel & Louise Ridinger daughter, Ida, who died 1850 at 1 year. Where is she buried?

The children of Peter & Catherine:
Lydia Ann Ridinger Witherow died 1895.
John Ridinger died 1904 in Harney (listed in Vol 7). (1st wife Naomi died bef 1872...where is she?)
Elizabeth Ridinger Heck died 1895.
Peter Ridinger died 1872 (listed in Vol 7).
Rachel Ridinger Mentzel died 1902 in Baltimore?
Mary Catherine Ridinger died 1857 (listed in Vol 7)
Isaac N Ridinger died 1889 (listed in Vol 7)
Rebecca J. Ridinger died 1860 (listed in Vol 7)

As you can see I was able to track some of them down when we were last at the Historical Society. BUT if you know of anyone that has photos would really appreciate that as well.

Thanks!!!
Betty
What a blessing to have someone check these out and post them.
Did check also the volumes that Carroll Co had when we were east some years ago. Have they come out with anything new in the past 7 years or so?
Betty

Hi Kathy,
You might try calling the church or cemetery office for further info. I don't know when the list was made that I sent. I'll be in Mount Airy tomorrow and Saturday if you need photos taken of anything.
I had a teacher at South Carroll HS whose married name was Pheobus. I believe her first name was Nadine. Also, I think my Burrows family from Tenleytown, Washington, DC is connected to Wilsons.
I visited the Davis family cemetery in the Gosnell (Mount Olive UMC) area and have photographed all of the stones there. I grew up on Davis Road and attended Mount Olive UMC which the Davis family founded. If they are connected to you and you'd like to have the photos let me know.
Hi Dianna,
My own search of a branch of my family in Anne Arundel has led me to the place I grew up...coincidentally, Gosnell, MOount Airy, Maryland (Mount Olive UMC) area. I was able to find a link to the Dorsey and Gillis families and am still researching. I attended Mount Olive UMC and lived on Davis Road off of Gillis Falls Road, Mount Airy, MD. I knew many of the old timers of these original families and attended school with their descendants. While looking for info on the Dorsey family I found this web sight. I hope it will be helpful. http://www.contexo.info/Andrew&PatienceDorsey/DorseysPro...

Caran

Hi...I hope you will see my post. I grew up in Gosnell on Davis Road off of Gillis Falls Road which is between Woodbine Road and Route 27, (Mount Olive/Mount Airy), Maryland. Mount Olive UMC was my home church. While researching a branch of my family it led me back to the Mount Olive area and the Dorsey and Gillis families. Yesterday my husband, aunt, and I went on a field trip to the Davis and Pool/Fleming family cemeteries near Mt. Olive UMC not knowing who they were until we arrived. I knew many folks with the surnames, Harrison, Gosnell, Shipley, Ray, Conaway (saw some Conaway family members last Sunday), Fleming, Grimes, Dorsey, Gillis, and many many more. I would be happy to photograph landmarks, churches, cemeteries, and graves if needed.
Regards

HI...hope this helps. Carroll County, Maryland was made up of parts of Frederick and Baltimore Counties. Frederick and Montgomery also had changes in regard to each other as I believe Frederick and Prince Georges did. Records will be listed under different counties depending on the time.

Hi Dianna,
I don't think so. There are only Davis' there. But I think you have just put me on the path to find another one in the area. Waters is a local name. I was just past one of tge original waters homes on Saturday. I grew up two miles from it and went to school with a member of a family who lives there. It's a very lovely old house and a rambling property. I'll ask if there is a cemetery there. There is also another Waters property close by. Watersville Road rund parallel to Davis Road where I grew up and are both connected by Gillis Falls Road. All three of these roads are named after prominent original families to the area.
I may be related to Ridgelys and Grimes also. I've run into both surnames quite a bit while researching.

Caran

My great grandparents Samuel Washington Stricker and Mary L Barnes were married in Carroll county in 1866, in March I believe at the home of the bride whose parents were Richard Adam Barnes and Ursula Carr Barnes. However, they got their license in Ellicott City which is in Howard county. When was the law changed that stated you had to get the license in the county or city in which you were getting married. I know that was the case in 1963, so it was before that.

Do you know the date that the law required people getting married in Carroll county to obtain their marriage licenses in the county where they were being married. Mu ggparents obtained their license in 1866 in Ellicott City but they were married in Carroll county in the Gamber area.

Hi Betty:

The Corroll County Genealogical Society, INC. members have transcribed most if not all of the current cemetery head stones in Carroll, Co., MD and published them in a series of volumns. You may be able to arrange a look-up.

Their web site follows: www.carr.org/eegs/

Their membership is quite reasonable, $10.00 for adults, and their newsletter the "Carolltonian' is outstanding. The best I have ever read.

You may also want to try "Find A Grave" (free) at

http://www.findagrave.com/

Good luck with you quest...

Regards, Jack Novicki

Thank you very much for the list from the Pine Grove Cemetery. I did not find anyone on the list, so far, that is related to me, but further research will probably show that they are. I found several markers at the cemetery when I visited there, that are not on the list. (Ernest Smith, Gertrude Smith, Alisa Mary Phebus, and Mary E. Phebus and others) So I think the list is not complete. Elsie (Smith) Davis Phebus is listed as a sister of one of my grt. uncles in his obit and I know Elsie had a son, Darrell or Darren but I am not sure if he was a Davis or Phebus. Apparently, Elsie married twice. Thank you for trying to help. I do appreciate it.
Kathy Wilson
