DNA testing has indicated that my ggg-grandfather, Benjamin NICHOL [b. 1769 in that part of Dorchester Co. that became Caroline Co. in 1773], shares a close common ancestor with Levan/Levin NICOLLS/NICHOLS [b. circa 1740-46 to John NICOLLS, Jr. and Isabelle, Dorchester Co.]. John Jr.'s father, John Sr. [m. Margaret ALFORD], had four other sons: Moses, Isaac, Joseph, and Benjamin--I suspect that Benjamin was in my direct line. I don't know whether my line dropped the 's', or the others added it, but other descendants of this bunch appear to have spelled the name NICHOLS down to the present. I would like to encourage males of this surname [in whatever form] with colonial roots in the DelMarVa area to get tested--maybe we can get this clan sorted out at last!--Bob Nichol

Does anyone know of a a way to get this paper online short of subscribing to the Newspaper Archive? Is the Denton Journal available on Microfilm Online, does anyone know about that. I thought it might have been at the Maryland Archives site but I wasn't able to figure it out. Thanks. Patti

Sallie Satterfield and Gustavus Pritchett

Dear Jean,
Thanks for your offer to search for info from Caroline County MD. Some of us would never be able able to find missing info, if indeed it exists, if there were not someone like you!

My great grandmother was Sallie Satterfield from Caroline County, Maryland. She was married to Gustavus Pritchett. I am having trouble finding out just who her parents were. I had always heard her referred to as Sallie, but the 1900 Federal Census lists her as Sarah E. (even though her husband’s name is listed as Augustus – and not Gustavus or Gus -- and his age should be 42 and not 62 : there seems to have been some overwriting on the original document, the names of their children are correct). Sallie is however a nickname for Sarah. This is where complications set in. In the different census records we can find both a Sarah E. (parents Richard John and Eliza Satterfield in the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 census records) and a Sallie E. (parents: Joseph and Nancy Satterfield in the1880 census records). Both sets of parents Joseph and Nancy or Richard and Eliza live a short distance from Greensboro, Henderson (used to be Hendersons) MD to the north and Denton to the south. Richard's daughter was born in 1862 and Joseph's in 1864. ). Does anyone know for sure or know where I might be able to find out which one is my great grandmother? I would tend to go for Sallie in the census records since I only ever heard her called Sallie (I never met her).
I do not know where Sallie and Gustavus are buried.
I know practically nothing about one of their daughters, Viola Pritchett (other than she married into another religion, was disowned by her family and left for New York where she died young -- supposedly had two daughters...).
After Sallie's death, Gustavus married his very young housekeeper Annie Bullen and they had a daughter Hilda Pritchett, and I know nothing elso of them.
I would appreciate any info you could give me.
James Pritchett

Solomon Dill (born circa 1755 in Kent Co., DE)

I have a published biography of my great grand father that says that his father Benjamin Dill (born circa 1783) came from Kent Co., DE to Mason Co., KY when he was small but the biography does not mention who Benjamin’s father was. The biography also mentions that the family moved from Mason Co., KY to Clermont Co., OH in 1813. I have since found the will of Solomon Dill (born circa 1755 in Kent Co., De) who died in Clermont Co., OH in 1820 that lists this Benjamin Dill and the rest of his children. I have not been able to find a will or other vital record that says who were the parents this Solomon Dill (note that there are several Solomon Dills in the Kentucky and Ohio region at that time).

Sarah and Mary 'Polly' RENCH, painters of miniatures, c1745-1806

Sarah Rench b. c1745 married James Claypoole Jr, portrait painter of Philadelphia and Mary Rench b. c1748 married (Judge)Jacob Rush, brother of Dr. Benjamin Rush. In his book, 'Reminiscences of a Very Old Man 1808-1897'(New York 1899, John Sartain wrote:- "Miss Polly Rench, sister to Mrs James Claypole, painted in miniature and had the merit of maintaining her mother and brother by the work of her pencil. She was a native of Maryland and probably first embraced the idea of painting from the connection of her sister, but of this I want information. She married Mr (Jacob) Rush, then a young practitioneer of Law since a judge." Additionally, Charles Willson Peale's biographer wrote that “Though Polly Wrench was a native of the Eastern Shore, he(Peale) met her here (in 1772)for the first time. Her sister had married James Claypoole, whose paintings he had seen on that first visit ten years before, and who had since sailed to Europe never to return."
Does anyone have more information on the Rench sisters, such as parents names, MD County of birth etc?
Denton, Maryland - Dec 29, 1906

Chistmas Day, according to the weather man , was the coldest Christmas Day experienced hereabout in the past 34 years and was the coldest day of the winter thus far. The thermometer reistered at 13 at midnight Christmas Eve. Ice was heavy in the upper Chesapeke Bay. However, the Christmas Spirit was abound, one of the busiest days for many people and pleasantly spent by most everyone. Preparations for the Christmas trade were made on a large scale by Denton merchants and their sales were unprecedentedly heavy as Denton has become a major location for fine merchandise.

Sallie Satterfield Pritchett of Caroline County, MD.

I am looking for information about my great-grandparents, Gustavus Pritchett and his wife Sallie (Sarah?) Satterfield, who llived in Grensborough. Gustavus(Gus) was born in about 1858 and Sallie was born about 1864 and died between 1910 and 1920. I know nothing about where they are buried nor of Sallie's family.
I am also looking for information on Thomas and Martha Pritchett, the parents of Gustavus and my great great grandparents. Some census records say he was born in Ohio of parents born in Maryland and other records say he was born in Maryland. I have found the records of the marriage of a Thomas (W. --?)Pritchett and Martha Spencer in 1848 and do not know if this is the same couple. The same marriage is listed in the information for Thomas Jefferson Pritchett.... I do not know if they are one in the same. I am willing to share the info that I have and would be grateful for any help.

James Pritchett (JJpritch@aol.com)

My father, Albert R. Thawley was born in Baltimore, Maryland, now deceased. Parents were divorced so I know every little about the Thawley family. My father's Dad died when he was a young boy. Think he grew up in a poor tough neighborhood. My Dad was retired from the U.S. Navy and later settled in Pennsacola, Florida where he sold real estate and played golf. Any info would be appreciated.
Thank you

I've just discovered my ancestor on a list for the Maryland Rev. War "Flying Camp", under command of Capt. Joseph Richardson, & his father, William Richardson. I've found it also referred to as the 14th Regiment, Caroline Co. My ancestor was Frederick Barnicassel, who lived in Worcester Co. Does anyone know of a good resource to this company, more details on the battles fought and other information? I'd love to know more about where he fought, where traveled, and so on. Thanks!
