DIETZ/Deitz in Baltimore City 1850-1870's?

Our line of six Dietz brothers from ESCHENBACH, BAVARIA arrived Balt. 1850-1853, the three youngest came last with their mother, Anna Maria Gilch Dietz, widow of JOhan Georg Dietz d. 1843. The five eldest bros. all worked in some form of furniture making.

JOSEPH SEBASTIAN DIETZ b. Jan 14, 1841, the youngest brother, had a job as a plumber in the 1860 census shown living with 4 of his bros.

The city directory shows a Joseph Dietz still doing plumbing in 1864 and living or working on King St. between Greene and Paca. There is another Joseph Dietz, cigar maker who may be a brother to a JOhn Dietz scissors grinder.
In 1865/66 the only Joseph Dietz is a cigar maker on Orleans ST.
In 1867/68 there are 3 Joseph Dietz: a tailer on Mulliken St., a laborer on Aliceanna St. and CONSTANCE AND DEITZ at 273 Pratt St. There is also a JOhn Dietz at the same address, but I believe that John Dietz is one of the six Dietz bros.

Can anyone help clear up the Dietz in these directories by claiming them?
s
1867/68

I am searching for an Eleanor Lewis, most likely born abt 1900-1905. I have a letter addressed from her to Louis Charlton Shock in Magnolia, WV. The letter was sent from Balto City, Maryland in 1921, and she signed the letter 'your daughter Evelyn'. I have no other evidence of her existance, other than this letter and her name in an address book.

She spoke about her two younger sisters, one of which is my grandmother Sadie DeCaster Shock.

Louis Charlton Shock also had a sister living in Balto City, by the name Sadie or Blanch Knight.

If anyone has any info on this line, please let me know.

Thank you,

Adam Hitt
wkuadam@gmail.com
Louisville, KY

s
Not easy to find even the record description and it does not appear that the records are online. They appear to be under the Register of Wills and Probate Records. From the Home (Main) page, click on "Reference and Research," which takes you to the Guide to Government Records. In the "Jump to Series" box in the upper right, the series I believe you want are T604 and CM208. (I don't initially see what the difference is in them.) They list the various microfilm reels covering different years. Some have been digitized (scanned), but none appear to be online. You may need to pay someone to research them. Guardianship appointments were often reported in the Sun, so you might try that avenue to identify dates for specific names.
John

My G Grandmother's 1907 certificate lists the undertaker and the cemetery.

GWW

Apologies for this being kind of a morbid topic..

I've been working alot on my father's side of the family. Particularly the Braun/Brown 's of Locust Point. According to the 1900 Census my GG Grandmother Marie/Mary (Nawrot) Brown was the mother of 6 children/ 6 living. (Alexander, Charles, Catherine, Anna, Augusta, and Emma)

On the 1910 census Marie was a widow, with 6 living/ 9 total Children.
Catherine, Charles, Augusta, and my G Grandfather Julius Jr (the youngest living) are all on that census.

Alexander is married at that point, as is Anna.

So Emma must have died sometime between 1900-1910. And then there were 2 other children.

I know Julius Sr also died in 1907 (and is buried on the edge of Cedar Hill, without any sort of headstone)
I can't imagine that she could have afforded to bury 3 kids in addition to the husband as they were working class people.

As far as I know, there is no one buried with Julius Sr. And I have yet to find out where Marie is buried.

My question is what did they do with these children that died young? (I read that stillborns weren't supposed to be counted on the 1910 census.. so these were living breathing infants/children.)
Was there a potters field nearby? Did the city somehow collect them? Backyard burials? I just want to find these children..especially Emma since I can put a name to her.

Death certificates began in Baltimore City in 1875. In the rest of the state in 1898.

Henry S. Cruse - Dec. 30, 1857, will not have a death certificate.
Carol-

Thank you so much! This is amazing. If you would be able to find death certificates, that would be great. Especially for Henry Cruse. I have been stuck for about 3 years trying to figure out who his parents were.

Can I ask you for one other obit? For Henry's wife, Isabella Jane Ford Cruse. I know it appears in the February 12, 1885 edition. Again, I am having
trouble finding her parents as well.

Thanks and if I can do anything for you, please let me know.

Lisel

Carol,
My wife and I have been trying to construct my wife's family history and were also wondering about the Baltimore Sun Times archives. Would you be up to looking for some of her relatives as well? She has limited family background as she grew up in the Augsburg Lutheran orphanage and didn't get to hear all the stories.

Edward

Hi-

What is the best way to access the Baltimore Sun online, from out of state? I noticed you can pay $50 to the Enoch Free library, $50 to the Baltimore County library, or go directly to the Baltimore sun and download articles (that is too expensive). Any help would be great, I know the Obits will help add pieces to my Cruse family puzzle.

Thanks

I'm just getting on my paternal grandparents side, and specifically my G Grandmother. I was always told she was Polish. She lived in the Fells point area as a child, then in Locust Point with her Hubby. I know her female siblings all seemed to marry Polish named men, but her maiden name is Smith, and I'm having a heck of a time tracing it.
(Her parents were John and Mary Smith!)

That side of the family all attended St Patrick's though, along with my grandfather and his siblings. I didn't realize the archives had records..Thank you for the link :)

It's not that I don't communicate with Bill, the issues were not between me and him but he defriended me on facebook so I assumed he was not talking to me. I would have thought he shared that with you. I was not aware he was ill. Sorry to hear that. I

Yes Sherry, my given christian name is Kenneth F Hall, but am 'Rusty' to all who know me. I thought Bill's family knew that. Are you no longer communicating with Bill too? He's been quite ill.

Thanks Rusty, I thought the post I replied to was someone named Ken. I started doing the geneaology again but started from scratch because I had given everything I had to Bill thinking I'd never do it again. I'm doing it thru ancestry this time, before I used to go downtown to Archives to get all my info. Amazing how much you can get online these days. HOpe you all are well.

Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much. These are the two I was looking for.

To answer some of the questions. The family was from Locust Point originally, and they did live there until at least 1940 census... But I was told last night that my Great Grandmother Evelyn moved to Fells Point, as did my grandfather and his family for a time The March 1st date I had was from the SSDI. for Julius.

As for Marie/Mary Nowalk..(Forgot to add the L last night) she would be Julius' mother, who was married to Julius Sr (Every body has the same name in this family!)

I have information about her starting in the 1900 Census, with reference that she came to America approx 1880-1882.

I also found their marriage certificate from the state which lists her name as Marie A.E Nowalk. (in clear handwriting)

I found a old Baltimore sun article from 1903 I think it was (I dropped my laptop last night, and broke it.. so I have to redig the link..argh!) but the article was about Julius Sr going to court because he was apparently in a fight with Marie/Mary/Marry (listed with different spellings in ever census) when her brother was in town to pay her a visit. He gets in the middle of the fight, and my GG Grandfather Julius Sr goes to court. In the article, which is fuzzy it looks like the man's name is Simon Nawrop and it says he was living in Woodstock Howard County. In the 1900 census I did find a Simon Nawrot (with a notion of
Newport in Howard Co District 3.. same approx age)
( I did copy the link to facebook, if you can read it..third story down)https://attachment.fbsbx.com/file_download.php?id=1237371011...

Although I wasn't really able to find anything more on that family

But then after Julius Sr died in 1907, in the 1920 census there is a Simon Nowak (Much more similar to Nowalk) living on the next street over, but his wife/children have totally different names!

It's just so frustrating!! :)

Hi Sherry, This is Rusty, and I share this site with your cousin Bill, whom is doing the Bizgia research (and has uncovered much on your family, since they stopped communicating with him). My posting of 17 Jun 2011 was in reference to the 'Hall/Hallameyer/Sullivan family of Baltimore. To my knowledge, I have no connections to your family, except through Bill.

Before work I got the idea to drive up to the area (I have been wanting to explore Cedar Hill and see if I can find any more relatives near my grandparents...in which as soon as I saw Holy Cross remember going with my parents as a child to visit Evelyn. Unfortunately at that point I was soaking wet, and late for work.. but I'll have to make a point to get back up there soon.

Thank you so much again!

I looked at your Cedar Hill posts again. You were looking for Julius Brown, whom you said died 1 Mar 1950. I found the attached death notice for Julius. He's buried with Evelyn at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn Park. The notice was in the Baltimore Sun on 29 Mar 1950. It says he died on 26 March.

Holy Cross Cemetery is owned/maintained by Holy Cross RC church on West Street in South Baltimore (not far from Locust Point). It is very predominantly German. Since Evelyn and Julius were both buried in that cemetery, you should check the church records closely for them and other relatives. The Maryland State Archives has most of them available online. They are very large pdf files that you can download. I looked for Evelyn's baptism in the index covering 1905. There were a number of variations of Schmidt children. No Evelyn in the index, but she might have been Anna Evelyn or something similar. You can find the Holy Cross records at
http://speccol.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/speccol/catalog/cf...
John

Please read the attached death notice for Evelyn Brown (nee Smith), wife of the late Julius Brown. This was in the Baltimore Sun on 29 Dec 1980. Is she the one you are looking for? If so, this should answer a lot of your questions and give you clues to further research. You should get her death certificate from the State Archives. Note that several of her siblings are listed, which should help trace her in earlier censuses, and maybe their parents.

I have a copy of the 1956 Baltimore City Directory. It lists:
Brown, Evelyn S. (widow Julius) h 703 Van Lill st
That address and St. Patrick's Church are in Fells Point, not Locust Point. You can see a picture of the house today on Google maps.

A couple suggestions to get more help: If you provide more details, someone might help you find info on the Nowak woman. (We don't know your Grandfather, when he was born, where they lived, who Marie was married to, or whether you have found them in any census.) I suspect you know some of those answers, and they might make it easier to find her. I also recommend you put her name in the subject. (not Locust Point: looking for my ancestors) I only suspected Evelyn was Julius' wife from searching for your other posts. Don't make your helpers work so hard and you'll get more help. Good luck. Post again if you have questions, but try to be more specific.

John
Braun/Brown family.

I'm having the hardest time trying to find info on my GGGrandmother (Mary?) Evelyn Smith (born approx 1905)
She died in the mid to late 70's, but I still can't find any info on her, including where she's buried/obits, etc (rest of the family is in Cedar Hill) and also looking for my Grandfather's mother Marie/Mary/Marry A. E Nowak(?)

I have spent so much time reading and researching everything I can about the area that I swear I'm inspired to write a book about Locust Point, hoping to find some clues to my ancestors.

Anyone who may know anything , or may be interested in the book I think I was destined to write.. please respond to the thread, or email jesso@atlanticbb,net
