i found german marylanders website, getting an idea of how many there were in baltimore plus their contribution to the city. i'm curious if anyone has roots in this community that would be willing to talk to me about what they have learned. i'm curious. i went through 1880,1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 census for my ancestors and saw the pages of german emigrants decrease each time in the neighborhoods.
roots are hedrick family arrived 1862 from hesse, last known german apeaker-reader died 1965. we found a german hymnal and german bible apparently given as confirmation gifts 1885 at trinity lutheran in baltimore. we can document 4 marriages there as well, two to english speakers, two to recent german emigrants.
my g-g-grandfather was a skilled cabinet maker, apparently trained in baltimore since he arrived at 24.
thanks for any help getting an idea of how these people lived.
