Mrs. Bettie A. Chowning widow of William Bailey Chowning, a Confederate veteran of the Civil War died at her home after an illness of several years. Death was due to heart trouble. Born in Middlesex Co., VA was the only daughter of Henry and Mary E. Garrett. The Garrett family was one of the oldest families in Virginia. Mrs. Chowning was a member of the Hermitage Baptist Church of Middlesex Co and came to Baltimore about 30 years ago. Her husband died nine years ago. Surviving her are one son Percy F. Chowning and two daughters Miss Helen G. Chowning and Mrs Mary Lee Shorter of Philadelphia. She was born 1846 and died 1916.
