anyone have any information on the family? I have census records showing in 1900 June 5th.. they lived in Baltimore County Maryland.. John Miller head of household, his spouse Mary D Miller, and her sisters Bertha and Meritia Jones, it did list that Meritias married surname was Miller, and had a son living with them but no husband listed there.. Hoping to find out more information on Bertha and Meritia along with their parents which states were both born in England.. another record showed Scotland. Thanks

PS, sorry not sure if it was listed as Meritias son or John's son for 'Arthur'.. so I guess need that clarified, even if you aren't part of the family, if you can simply look at the census records to let me know whats correct that'd be appreciated! Thanks!

There is a book published in the 1990s listing the various clergymen in Maryland with a short biography and chronology of the churches they served. I have seen the book but cannot recall in what library. Can anyone provide the correct title and author? I have searched the web to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

PA death record indices are online now, but I am sure they're not that easy to search. I also tried to find an obituary for her in The Sun (Baltimore) archives and couldn't find one. Good luck with your research.

In 1930, the family was split up. There was a fire in Harrisville, Pennsylvania in October 1927. The family moved quite a bit due to employment opportunities.

The father, Robert J Kaib was living in Cleveland, Ohio with two of the boys.
Helen(a)Marie Foster Kaib was in the Mercer County Hospital (sanitarium)due to a nervous breakdown caused by the death of two daughters in the fire in 1927.

Their daughter, Helen Dolores Kaib, sons, Robert J Kaib, Jr and Frank Kaib were put into foster care. Robert and Frank were adopted by different families. Frank died at the age of about 18 months.

Florence Cecelia Kaib is still a mystery. I've tried every spelling possible to find her. It has taken me 20 years to find her birth record. I don't know whether she died in Maryland or Pennsylvania. I will keep looking. Some of the records aren't available yet. Thank you for trying.

Hi, I'm trying to find my husband's birth father... He's never met him and has only known his step dad... His mother went to great lengths to hide the fact that his step father isn't his real dad- she even cut out his real dad's name from his birth certificate... He said one day he wanted to know where he came from which he has every right. I decided to at least start the search and try to help. His dad's name is Kenneth Alan Woolferd Sr. and he was 22 when my husband was born. His mother and birth father were never married but his mother's name is Leah and my husband's name is Michael Emery Lyons. His birthday is November 22, 1991.

He said he is pretty sure he has an older brother seeing as his dad's name has Sr. at the end of it and he also saw in 'people you may know' on facebook Kenneth Alan Woolferd Jr.

Pretty much all of MD (seeing as his mom has lived everywhere in MD) is part of the search... I have done so much searching with dead ends and it makes me feel bad he doesn't even know what his dad looks like. Even if he doesn't want to meet Mike, he should know what a wonderful man he's turned out to be and he just wants to see where he came from.

ANY help is very much appreciated, I've lost hope in trying to find him... Maybe he doesn't want to be found, maybe he does.. Either case my husband deserves to know where he's from and have a bit of closure in his life...

Thanks so much in advance!!

Autumn Lyons

P.S.
Here's a picture of my husband in case by chance of course, someone related to Kenneth is reading... Might be helpful when finding him!

Where was the family in 1930? I checked the County death index for 1914-23 and 1924-33 with no results. Also checked the City index for 1922-1927 with no results. It's always possible her name was incorrectly indexed if you feel certain she died around that time. Or maybe she died out of state?

Do you know who owned the property in 1915?
If so, you could search for them in the
U.S., Indexed County Land Ownership Maps for Baltimore County 1915 here on Ancestry. It shows the property owner's names on a plat map.
I do see some Whitcrafts listed there, but they don't seem to be right in Freeland. It is in the general area of the 7th district.
The index won't show Freeland as a separate location, but Freeland does appear on some of the maps for White Marsh and possibly for other towns.
I hope this helps.

George M. HOLLAND, b. ~1827, d.1884

I'm looking for vital (birth, death, obituary, will, probate) records and burial location of George M. HOLLAND and wife, Bridget (DEVINE) HOLLAND, AKA Mary Bridget DEVINE.

George and Bridget were married by Father James DOLAN on 13 August 1853 [Date corrected as of March 2013] in Baltimore city (exact location unknown). I have copy of Balt. Sun marriage announcement, 19 August 1853.

George and Bridget had children: Araminta (HOLLAND) ALLENDER; Carrie, AKA Clara (HOLLAND) ALLENDER; Carville W. HOLLAND; Mary HOLLAND.

George HOLLAND was son of Aaron HOLLAND and Rebecca (ROBINSON) HOLLAND. George had brother John HOLLAND and other unknown siblings. John and George were coopers and lived with their mother, Rebecca HOLLAND, at the time of the 1850 census - at least she had the census taker enumerate their presence.

George worked as a cooper in Baltimore city 1850 until after he and Bridget married. There is some evidence that George lived and worked near McElderys wharf in Baltimore city in 1850, and as a result, he may have been double counted in the 1850 census.

Thereafter, George and Bridget and their family lived in Baltimore city until some years before the 1870 census. There is some evidence that George HOLLAND and family lived in or near Govanstown (now northern Baltimore city) in 1860.
By 1870, George HOLLAND and family was established in a home near the intersection of Fork and Bottom Roads, east of Baldwin, MD.

There are two possibilities about the immigration of (Mary) Bridget DEVINE. The first is that Bridget DEVINE arrived into the port of Baltimore in June-Augusut 1849 as a 19-20 year old single woman without family who accompanied her. In this case, she lived in a Baltimore city rooming house at the time of the 1850 census.
The second possibility is that Bridget DEFINE likley emigrated from Ireland in September 1846 with family members of the same last name. She was between ten and sixteen years of age at the time of here arival in Baltimore. In either case, Bridget lived in Fells Point area, Baltimore city and likely met George HOLLAND in his work as a Cooper near Fells Point.

Family records indicate that George HOLLAND died in 1884 and that Bridget (DEVINE) HOLLAND died in December 1894. They likely are buried in St John's catholic cemetery in Long Green / Hydes, MD where they likely were part of the parish. [Bridget HOLLAND death & burial date & cemetery location corrected in March 2013 thanks to info provided by Dr. Rodgers]

Thanks, Joe

Do you have any other information on Edmand WELLS, b. 1777, Baltimore?

There are two early WELLS families listed in Robert BARNES' Baltimore Co. Families, 1659 - 1759. Research on the James WELLS family by Mrs. Florence MONTGOMERY is at the Maryland Historical Society. James WELLS was transported in 1669 in the Nightingale of York. He & Thomas RICHARDSON in 1673 purchased "Taylor's Mount" from Samuel TRACEY. He probably had sons John, Joseph, Stephen, & James WELLS. James WELLS (1) owned "Mascall's Haven" in Anne Arundel Co., which was sold in 1697 by John WELLS.

Richard WELLS arrived from Virginia about 1652 with wf. Frances, dau/o Richard WHITE. The names George and Benjamin occurred often in his family.

There wouldn't be a birth record in 1777, but you might find a baptism or legal records such as land records or wills.

Hi Eldon, don't know if I will be much help, if any. My 3rd g-grandfather Daniel Shugars bough land from Phillip Owings in 1861. Daniel's grandson, Samuel Wells Shugars was born in 1865 in Hampstead, Carroll County, MD. We believe he was delivered by DR Thomas W. Wells or one of his sons DR Thomas W. Wells, Jr or DR Alexis E. Wells.

I will be most curious if you find a connection between the Shugars and the Wells.

Cindy Shugars Kohl
cindy@hotkohls.com

Hey Bill,

An Elisha James (b 1776, d 1862) is a brother to my Walter James (b 1770, d 1862). Parents were John James and Avarilla Standeford. Both along with another brother, John James, were born in Joppa, Maryland, near Baltimore.

Avarilla was John's second wife. The first was Mary Bussey.

Elisha married Lucinda Elizabeth Edney in 1796. Lucinda died in Ohio, and Elisha then married Frances Fanny Herndon.

He had 15 children. It appears the family remained in Indiana as there is quite a bit of history about them in histories of the area from the late 1800s. You can find many of them in my tree, James Family Tree, user 86187. The names do repeat in this line - John, Samuel, Walter, Elisha, Amos, Jonathan, William, George, etc. There are many Elishas in this line.

I do not know if anyone from this line has had their DNA tested. There are no male James heirs left in my line. In fact, this James line is not one of the more popular ones, so it is exciting to find someone researching this line.

Below is information I found on this line. Hope it helps.

Betsy

From Portrait and Biographical Album (Book)

ELIAS P. JAMES. This gentleman is a fine type of our self-educated and self-made men, who form an important class of citizens in Piatt County. He is a farmer and stockman who has met with great success in the pursuit of his business, and his farm in Blue Ridge Township is a well cultivated, well improved and well equipped as any to be found in the vicinity. Rush County, Ind., is the birthplace of our subject and September 28, 1835, the date on which he first opened his eyes to the light of the world in thie humble pioneer home of his parents. His father whose name was Elisha James was born in Tennessee and reared in Ohio. In 1830, he went to Rush County, Ind., and cast his lot with its pioneers locating in the primeval forests, where in the course of a long and useful life he cleared and improved three farms. Late in life he moved to Bollinger County, Mo,, and a short time after came to Piatt County, where his remaining days were passed in peace and plenty, his death occurring here in 1887 at the age of seventy-five years. He was an earnest Christain, and ever an active worker in the Baptist Church. His widow, who is still living, was born in 1919 near Lexington, KY., her maiden name having been Catherine Poston. She is a devoted member of the Baptist Church. She is the mother of thirteen children of whom nine are living.
Mr. James of whom this shetch is written was born and reared in a log house on his father's homestead. His education was somewhat limited as far as it was carried on in schools, as he had to walk two miles to an old log schoolhouse; and in those days schools were conducted on the subscription plan and the terms were often very short. However, he has made up for these early deficiencies and is well informed on all general topics. He began liife for himself as a farmer in Rush County, Ind., and thence went to Wabash County of which he was a resident the ensuing ten years. Immediately after going there he purchased eithty acres of land which was covered in timber, and for which he paid $600. He cleared it and developed it into a good farm, which he sold ten years later for $3,200, and in this way he obtained a good start. In January, 1871, he came to Piatt County and purchased his present homestead in Blue Ridge Township. This was then a wild tract of prairie and it is only by incessant toil and close attention to his business that he brought it to its present admirable condition. His farm comprises three hundred and fifty-five acres of good land, which he has placed under the best of cultivation and has adorned it with neat and attractive buildings, including a good frame building, which he erected in 1880, and commodious barns. His farm is well stocked with cattle, horses, and hogs of excellent grades.
Mr. James has been greatly assisted in his labors by the active co-operation of his wife, who is an able manager in household affairs, and is a shrewd counselor. Mrs. James, whose maiden name was Mary I Shepherd, was born in Knox County, Ill., March 18, 1842, and was wedded to our subject in 1862. They have been blessed by the birth of seven children, two of whom are deceased - Quincy and Estella. The others are named Cora A/. Charles E., Emma Z., Elmer B., and Elias O. Cora is a graduate of the Union Christian College, and is now successfully engaged in teaching. Emma and Elmer are still students in that institution, whicle Charles is occupied in teaching.
Mr. James is a man of great personal worth, is moral and upright in all his relations and a generous, kindly warm-hearted man, who has many friends in this community. In politics, he affiliates with the Democratic Party. He takes a sincere interest in his adopted township and has held various of the minor offices, performing the duties thus devolving upon him with characteristic fidelity. Socially, he is connected with the MAsonic order. Religiously, he is a devoted member of the Christian Church, as are his wife and children with the exception of one, and they are active in (no more text)

PIATT COUNTY, ILLINOIS

ELIAS P JAMES

Elias P James has placed his earnings in the safest of all investments, real estate, and is to-day the owner of valuable landed holdings in Piatt County. His home is in Blue Ridge Township, where he has a splendidly improved property, He was born in the neighboring state of Indiana, his birth having occurred in Rush county, on the 27th of September, 1835. His parents were Elisha and Catherine (Poston) James, and the father was a farmer by occupation. HE was born in Tennessee, and the mother's birth occurred in Kentucky. After living for some years in Indiana, they removed to Missouri, and afterward came to Illinois, settling in Piatt county. They spent their last days on the farm of our subject and when called to their final home their remains were interrd in the Mansfield Cemetery.

Elisha P James obtained his education in Rush county, Indiana, pursuing his studies in the old Bell school. The little "temple of learning" was an old log schoolhouse with slab benches. There was a large fireplace in one end of the room, and upon the wall an old-fashioned clock. The books were primitive in character, and the teaching was also after the same style. Mr. James has led a very busy and useful life. He began working for himself when twenty-one years of age, and rented a tract of land in order that he might carry on farming on his own account. The first land which he ever owned was near Bear Swamp in Wabash county, indiana. He paid twelve hundred dollars for a tract of one hundred and sixty acres. This was all covered with timber and Mr James cleared away half of it and then sold his land for forty dollars per acres, disposing of the property on the 1st of October 1870. He then purchased one hundred and sixty acres of land in Blue Ridge Township, Piatt county, becoming owner of his farm on the 15th of October, of the same year. He has devoted his time and energies largely to the raising of stock and grain, and he was at one time the owner of seven hundred and fifty acres of valuable land. This, however, he has divided among his children, giving to each forty acres so that he now has himself a tract of two hundred and eighty acres, all in Blue Ridge township. He bought one hundred and fifty acres at twenty-four dollars per acre, forty acres for thirty-one and a half dollars, one hundred and fifteen acres for ninety dollars per acre, eighty acres for one hundred and six dollars, and forty acres for one hundred and one dollars per acre. Thus he has invested large amounts of money in land, but has found this profitble way to use his capital, because of the rich yield which the fields give and because of the excellent pasturage which the land affords, this making it profitable to raise stock.

In Wabash county, Indiana, Mr. James was united in marriage on the 6th of February, 1862 to Miss Mary I Shephard, who was born MArch 16, 1842, in McDonough county, Illinois. The lady is a daughter of Robert and Sallie Shephard, and by her marriage she has become the mother of seven children, four sons and three daughters; Stella B., who was born January 19, 1864; Cora B. born Mary 23, 1865; Charles E., Born September 23, 1867; Emma Z., borm December 1, 1869; Elmer B., January 9, 1872; Robert Quincy, born January 29, 1876; and Elias Ollan born MArch 9, 1879. A number of the children were married and Mr. and MRs. James and their sons and all their children by marriage are members of the Christian church. Mr .and MRs. James have been members of this section since 1862 and have led earnest, consistent lives in harmony with their professions. Mr. James also belongs to the Masonic fraternity of Mansfield, and he votes with the Republican party. The honors and emoluments of office, however have had no attraction for him, as his time has been fully occupied by his business interests. He has displayed sound judgment in all of his work, untiring energy in the prosecution of his affairs, and unfaltering honesty in all of his relations with his felllow men. His life record should serve as a source of help and inspiration to others showing what may be accomplished through persistency of purpose and diligence. He is to-day one of the best known and well as one of the most successful agriculturists of Piatt county.

My name is Elden Wells and I live in Ohio. My family has been searching for my 4th great grandfather Richard Wells who we beleive is from the Baltimore area. We had dismissed the fact that Alexander Wells could be his father although
they seemed to be in the the same areas together such as Washington County Pa in the time around 1790-1800. Richard settled in Monroe County Ohio about 1803-1806. Do you have any information on Richard, who we also beleive married Nancy Hardesty in Baltimore in 1788. Or do you have any sites that may give us some hints.
Thank you
Elden Wells
Kent Ohio

Hi Betsy,
Thanks so much for your reply. In the past few years, I've not made much progress to get beyond my "brick wall" of my ggg-grandfather Jason Elisha James b. 1792, to find out the identity of his father.
Others on Ancestry.com have asserted the father of my ggg-grandfather John Elisha James was a man named Elisha James. However, I still have an inkling that the Walter/Watkins James line is involved in the family tree due to the recurring name of "Walter" in descendants of John Elisha James.
Do you know if any of the descendants of the Walter/Watkins James line have taken the Ancestry.com DNA test? That might shed additional light on the mystery.
Thanks very much for your reply.
Bill James

Hello Jason,

I don't know if this will reach you since your post was quite a while ago.

I have Walter James married to Cordelia Legoe December 23, 1762 at St. John's Parish (Baltimore City), Baltimore, MD and they were the parents of Walter (III) b 1764 d 1820and Watkins, b 1762 d 1849. This matches your information.

Watkins (b 1762) married Sarah Stiffler (b1771, d 1842 in Washington, MD). According to the 1800 census they lived in Marsh and Barren Hundred, Washington, MD.

Their children were:

Walter 1791
Abraham 1794-1831
Nancy 1794-1850
Bennett 1798 - 1870
Hannah 1799-1869
Harriett 1801
Cordelia 1803-1869
Watkins 1807-1881

Cordelia was Walter's second wife. Elizabeth Hillen was his first wife (1694-1751). Their children were:

Henry Quine 1722
Elizabeth 1728-1770
Priscilla 1733-1862
Ruth
Susanna
Walter - 1782

I am descended from
John James & Avarilla Standeford,
Walter James & Liddia Cox,
Amos James & Nancy Condra Wilson,
John M James & Ann M ??,
William Wilson James & Minnie Bowles,
William Wilson James Jr & Anna Louise Bruce.

This James line is quite confusing as they named their children the same names!! Hard to keep them straight. But, I think after years of research I have found enough evidence to sort out my line.

My research shows that Hannah James (sister to Nancy) was married first to Joseph P Moats. After Nancy died, Hannah married Henry Artz.

My tree is under 86187 James Family Tree if that helps you.

You have probably gotten this information by now. I will be glad to work with you.

Betsy

From what I can trace, Dorothy Phoenix Sawyer was my mother's half sister, Hope Phoenix born in 1920. My grandmother married John Jasper Phoenix, Jr. in Germany during WWI and they came back to Greensboro, North Carolina where his family lived. My grandmother, Margaret Hope Phoenix, left him when my mother was about 3 years old and moved to Boston, Massachusetts and never saw them again. My mother never knew her father but remembered an older sister. I don't even know if they ever got a divorce. I can't find a record of one. I would love to know if Dorothy ever talked about my mother and wondered what happened to her. Please reply.

The Carl I'm trying to find was born 9th July 1824 in Elsdorf, Germany. Father Friedrich Gottlieb Heinecke. Mother Dorothea Helms. This Elsdorf is near Zeven. My Carl came from was Winsen Luhe near Hamburg not Winsen near Celle. His widowed mother was living Winsen Luhe up to about 1860.
He travelled alone to USA.
Only found this one yesterday, so I don't know anymore about him.
He possibly had another brother living in Philadelphia. Georg Friedrich Heinecke (known as Dr George Frederick Heinecke). My husband's line Friedrich Wilhelm Heinecke brother of Carl and George came to Australia in 1853.
