In the 24-volume Documentary History of the State of Maine, James "Mackneall" (probably "McNeal") is listed in vol. 11, p. 427, as one of "the Famileys in Barwick above Chaborns River," i.e., in what is now the town of Berwick proper. Who was he? Where was he from? Did he marry and have a family? If so, what became of them? There were no McNeals enumerated in Maine in 1790, and none were listed as Rev. War soldiers of Berwick, which suggests that James and / or his family had gone elsewhere by then. Any insights would be most welcome.
