Maine Vital Records -
The State did not start collecting Vital Records (births, marriages, deaths) until 1892. Before then they were recorded at the town level. Each person had to report to the town clerk and pay the clerk $1 for each report before the record was recorded. Needless to say that was a lot of money in those days so more than not the vital records were never recorded.
The Archives have death records from 1892-1922. The deaths are not online until 1960.
