I have been looking for more information on my husband's ancestor, Peter Henry, who lived in Atusville- Machias Maine in the 1800's.
Information that I have on Peter Henry:
-He was born in 1806 (this may not be the exact date.)
-Listed as "black" on all census records that I can find
-Birthplace: New York. Census records list his birthplace as Red Hook, Dutchess County, NY.
-One census record lists Peter Henry as being born in New Jersey
-Mother's maiden name is probably Lowell. I'm not 100% sure this is true though.
-His parents are listed on census documents as being born in New York.
-He married Sophronia Atus in 1832 in Machias (Atusville) Maine
-His occupations are listed on various census records as Cook or Sailor or Seaman
-He lived his adult life in Machias (Atusville) Maine, but I have no record as to how/when he got there.
-His wife Sophronia Atus was the daughter of London Atus, who was supposedly a semi-hero of the Revolutionary War. The town "Atusville" was named after London and it was a black settlement.
-Peter Henry and Sophronia had 6 children: Permelia, George, Ellis, Thomas, Susan and Alonzo Lowell.
-Peter Henry died in 1889.
Any information on the Henry family history would be greatly appreciated.
