I'm descended from Diana Nichols (1798-1864) and her husband Isaac Southard (1796-1871) of Somerset County. I've been attempting to link this line to Myles Standish, John Alden and Abraham Samson through Diana's mother Sarah Ann (Sally) Gullifer (1779-1874). I've found all the concrete evidence from the Mayflower up to Sarah Ann as the daughter of Thomas Gullifer and Patience Tozier, and I've traced my line back to Diana Nichols.
The problem is that I can't seem to find any hard evidence showing that Diana Nichols (Nickels, Nicholas, etc.) is the daughter of William Nichols and Sarah Ann Gullifer. Through my research at libraries, online and even in Maine, I realize that the name "William Nichols" is quite ubiquitous, and seems to have a great deal of uncertainty associated with it. The current information I have on William is that he was born in Middlesex, MA and possibly resided in Fairfield, ME when he met and married Sarah Ann Gullifer.
I have found Diana's DC and her mother's name is not listed on it. I've also scoured the Vital Records of Winslow, Maine as that's where Diana's parents were married. I've had no luck finding wills, bibles or any other documentation. I've even looked through info on Vassalboro as that's where Diana may have been born. Any help or direction would be tremendously appreciated! Thanks in advance.
