Re: New Sweden, Maine

Hi,
No such formal list of immigrants that came to New Sweden exists. However, I do have a rather extensive data base with information on thousands of Swedish emigrants that came to New Sweden, Maine and the surrounding communities. There is also a partial list of immigrants that was compiled in 1929 by Marie Malmquist titled Läpptäcke that is included in the Maine's Swedish Colony Centennial History from 1970. I checked my data base and I don't have either Per or Oskar listed. I found them on the Swedish emigration data base known as emibas. They emigrated on April 5, 1871 from Södra Sättra, Svennevad, Örebro (Närke) to "Nordamerika". I checked the Malmquist list and they are not included on that list either. But as I said before that list is incomplete.
Are you sure they were heading for New Sweden, Maine? If you have additional information to share with me I would be happy to help you try and locate them.
The only information I currently have is that which I found on emibas:
PER ADOLF EKMAN born 10 Dec 1826 in Bo, Örebro
HILDAADELINA EKMAN (his daughter) born 31 July 1856 in Sköllersta, Örebro
ADOLF OSKAR EKMAN (his son) born 11 Nov 1859 in Sköllersta, Örebro
Their emigration date is noted above.
Two years later on 15 Aug 1873 three women also emigrated from Sweden. These women may have been the wife and daughters of Per (as they came from the same parish and the birth dates of all of them appear to be logical, they are:
CHARLOTTA ANDERSDOTTER born 19 June 1829 in Bo, Örebro
ELIN CHARLOTTA EUFENNIA born 15 July 1869 in Svennevad, Örebro
ADOLFINA WILHELMINA born 23 August 1852 in Sköllersta, Örebro
Let me know if you'd like me to look some more. I do have several Ekmans in New Sweden, just not yours, maybe some of the Ekmans that I do have are family members of yours.

Lynn Johnson
Chairperson New Sweden Historical Society Genealogy Division
They lived in the Grand Falls area for a while and then moved to Drummond, NB. Joseph Sr. lined with his son Joseph Jr. around 1900 in Drummond, but no Agnus. Some of their children: Frank, George, Josiphine, Clorinda (married Plant). I have seen this name spelled different ways: Sights, Sykes, Sytes

Location of Charles Edward Stewart's Blacksmith Shop, Ashland, ME

I am looking for information on the exact location of Charles Edward Stewart's blacksmith shop. He lived in Ashland from 1900 to 1932. The original blacksmith shop burned at some point and was re-built. I am unsure of any further details or dates. It was either in town or just outside. Any information/documents about the location of the shop would be fantastic as I am planning a trip to Ashland this summer and would love to visit the site. Also, any photographs of the shop would be most welcome. Thank you for your time. Below you will find three ads that were placed in the 1922, 1927, and 1928 yearbooks. This is all the information that I have on his shop.

Looking for information on Irene Plourde giving birth to son Fort Kent,Maine 1935-37

I am looking for information on the son Irene Plourde had in Fort Kent Hospital in Fort Kent,Maine. Year 1935-1937 not sure of year. We think she was from the Carbou,Maine area
The son's father was Romeo Theodore Desjardins he was from New Canada, Maine.
The son last name we think was Plourde(?) but not sure.
He contacted the family of Romeo Desjardins after his Mother died. By then Romeo was also dead.
The thing that he did tell Rene Desjardins was that he had Gigantism. He wanted to know if anyone in the family had it.
When the son contacted the family he was living in California.
There was a letter from him but it has been lost.
Romeo grandson is going to California and he wants to make contact with him.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to learn a bit more about Jane Ingraham, who I believe died in Littleton on 13 Apr 1891. She was born Jane Ray about 1815 in Ireland and married a man named Alexander Ingraham. In particular I'd like to find out if there is an obiutary that lists living relatives or a death certificate that might indicate her parents' names.

Regarding John Peter Levesque's age, I don't believe he was as old as claimed. In the 1861 New Brunswick census, he states that he was 40 yrs old, making him born in 1821. In 1871, he states that he is 56 yrs old. He gained more than 16 yrs in age in just 10 yrs. By the 1900 Maine census, he states that he was born in May 1809, not 1803 as recorded by his death record.

Regarding the Searles Family history published by Robert Searles several years back, I have seen it and it is full of errors. Tom: yes, the death records are on ancestry.com. I will email you several from my email address two4justice@msn.com.

Dale

Hi Jerry and Dale!,
Won't spend to much more time on this but on Robert Searles, he was descended though Rose Ellen (Levesque) Seales I believe, or related. My grandmother was raised by o Forest Ladd and Mitilda Mildora Searles, whose first husband was Frank Levesque (my grandmothers biological father), one of John Peters sons and Rose Ellens brother. Only because my mother hairdresser way down here in NH turned out to a cousin (and Robert Searles brother) did she and we find out about our French ancestry, (which I think is great, I'm part French, English and Indian!) Anyhow I have Robert's stories (he lived in Georgia, passed away now), including the false idea that Levesque was really Levitt: irish. Nevertheless the storys are interesting my e mail is tomsawyer@thelifeline.net if you want to send your address I can mail you a copy. It's on Seales but mentions Levesques, littles and others. P.S. have not seen a Newpaper article on John Peter but I have a big one for his daughter Rose Ellens, nothing genealogal in it though, but nice story again of hardships and perservance, she lived to be quite old also.
Hi Dale and Jerry,

I think the person who mentioned him being psrt indain had attributed it to you so I will not take it to seriously. I also heard from a desendant who was from Rivière-du-Loup, you may have to, living now in the city, but I think I offended her as she stopped corrresponding, but it might have been interesting what she could have turned up. Were do you find the death records? are they on Ancestry.com? What do you think of the fancy name in his last census record, I know every record has a different spelling, as well as a different birthdate, so if he lived as long as supposed, how sure can we be. Sure like the idea, his granddugter, my grandmother lived to be 102 or 103, including surviving a arota anurism, which the doctors said was quite unusual. Also as Jerry siad yesterday Susan was much younger which is a bit unusual also.

A few years back I had someone ask me if I had ever come across Indian ancestors (native americans) in the Levesque/Little line - guess they probably were wondering about the Levesque line.

Just wondering (sure this has been discussed several times before)......if John Peter Levesque was 109 years old when he passed away (1803-1912), would this have made him one of the oldest citizens in the USA at the time? Would there have been local writeups in any Maine newspapers about his passing? And although anything is possible, it looks like he would have fathered his children with Susan Little when he was in his mid 50's to mid 70's? I have come across more than a few ancestors who were fathers in the 50's but have never come across any who fathered children in their 70's.

What is the Robert Searle's pamplet? I have heard a few people mention it (and also that it contains more than a few factoral errors)?

Jerry

Hi Tom,

I haven't had much success tracing John Peter Levesque back to QC. I do not speak french and the early records are in French. I did find several years ago a death record in early Caribou for an Amab Levesque who lived to be quite old who came from the same city as John Peter. Maybe a connection. According to the death record, Amab died March 15, 1915 in Caribou at the aged of 95. He previously resided in Connor, ME. He was born in Rivière-du-Loup. I've never heard that John Peter might have Indian ancestors. I imagine it's certainly possible.

Dale

Hi, so glad to hear from you Dale. I was up in New Brunswick in mid Oct and rode down the St John River valley from Perth to Woodstock and was hoping to get to the Archives were you have left your research I believe, but you have answered my question about John Peter Levesque. I tried to look at the catholic church records (?) on ancestry last year and find a plausible person from River-de-loup but could not. Have you made any father back connections? Someone said he might be part indian? heard of this at all? (I am definitely part indain on my fathers side of the family).

On the little's all I can add, if that, is in Robert Searle's pamphlet (full of errors)he says the Littles moved to limestone around 1880 +_ I see Caribou you have listed. And they the whole gang, littles, searles, levesques etc. were all farmers and or particullarly cutting trees. Some of them lived around Moose mountian on the Canadian side of the border (there is a Moose mt on the US side also). Certianly the records have John Peter moving all around it seems. There is a picture of him standing with Susan in some large field somewhere in Canada. -Tom S.
